Scout.com: Bone back on trail of intriguing prospect
This is behind the pay wall, but the kid's name is Emerson Murray. I'll have a full writeup on him with video later today, but if you want to start the discussion now, here's the place.

Man, you beat me to the punch
I was only coming to comment on his awesome Kid ’n Play fade.
As long as his big shot celebration involves spinning in a circle with one foot locked with Capers, then I think we have a winner.
Video for those that aren't old enough to get Kid N' Play
Here. This kid needs to sign. He and Capers could pull this off and I could die a happy man
This is their Aprl Fools article...
right?
I mean, obviously, we could never land a dude with those kinds of hops AND that hair.
Vanilla Ice's secret brother "Chocolate Ice"
Here is his you tube video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6Wr17Jfn-Q
He has a serious crossover. He is also more athletic than Thames.
Are you kidding me?
This kid looks legit. He has way more hops than Thames. Imagine the hops we would have with Moore, Capers & Murray. I don’t know what kind of hops Aden has. This will be a lot more exciting to watch than Bennett Ball.

Him and Moore together is VERY intriguing.

oops
didn’t really mean for that picture to be so large.
This kid looks awesome
great handles, gets to the bucket and looks to have a decent stroke. Anybody have his measurables?

6'3 (6'5 with the hair) 180 lb combo guard
Not sure about speed/vert but they look pretty good.
24 ppg/ 8 rbg / 5 apg / 3 spg his jr year. I’m still looking for his stats from this year
Thames who?
It is amazing what can happen in 24 hours. I have been a little bummed, but now I have already forgot about Thames after seeing this video. Did anyone know this kid was on the radar? He is athletic and has serious handles. I can’t believe he isn’t ranked higher on Scout…probably because Scout hasn’t really seen him and he plays in BC. I think he could give Reggie a run for his starting spot. This is definitely a Bone type of player…Quick. Get that Canuck to Pullman now! Hope he doesn’t have school issues like Johnny The Canadian Rocket.
I have to say he has to keep the fade and not cut it. Imagine how tight his hair would be by his senior year. Love the du!!! Emerson “Sky Walker” Murray.

Can anyone find video of Aden?
I feel like this guy is a Dark-horse. I wonder if he has hops. Imagine the hops we would have on this team with the addition of Murray and Aden. I kind of wish I had a better idea of the kind of player we are getting in Aden…video wise that is.

When you see Bone is after guys like this...
and Reggie last year, it makes you start to realize that he really is after a completely different level of athlete for his system. I mean, Thames and Harthun are not un-athletic guys and by historic Coug standards, Thames especially, is a world-beater. Its hard to imagine a Coug coach not scratchng and clawing and fighting to keep him around. Then you see this guy. Good grief, we just don’t get many players with that kind of “stuff”. Now, can he land him and others like him? That is going to be the big test for Bone.
I always forget
Are these guys leaving the b-ball program going to hurt us? I know with football transfers, guys not finishing school and things of that sort hurt us, but I forget what it is called. I know Wulff has been trying to improve it, because our score is low. Can I get a refresher coarse on what this is called and how it works?

Sorry a little off the subject
But I am ready to Moos to get in here full time and start doing his thing. One more month…uuuhhhg.

I want this guy.
Maybe he can tip the ball in with his hair?
Possibly, I am pushing it, but I see next season going to the Elite Eight. Sounds ridiculous, I know. Good players coming in, with a majority of our distinct contributors returning. I think I am dreaming too hard, but it doesn’t hurt! :D
Taking a step away from basketball for a second, what does everyone think about 4-Star RB Bishop Sankey? Saw him on scout a couple weeks ago and was like HOLY SCHMOLEY. He looks good.
If we get this guy
and either one of our current big guys improve or we get a good one, I don’t think that is out of the question.

Some of the big guys were listed in a article on cougfan.com
Mo Walker and Aziz Ndiaye were the most profound looking ones listed. I hope Ken Bone can snag one of the two before someone else gets them.
Aziz Ndiaye is getting serious looks from Kentucky and UW
Mo Walker has every Big East school on him, though he did go to the same prep school as Reggie. Both of these two aren’t incredibly likely
I haven't seen Emerson this year.
But I don’t think he’s really a PG. He is a VERY athletic kid, though and he had a decent shot.
He had a bit of a disappointing season, largely for reasons beyond his control. He had, I believe, a pretty serious ankle injury in the summer that slowed him down a bit. His team didn’t qualify for the provincial tournament this year, basically because the coaches at the public schools in Vancouver REALLY REALLY REALLY hate the private school he goes to (and another private school in the city). They changed the format of their regional tournament from 12 to 16 teams, so that the independent schools (which have to play in their own league) would only have one team qualify for the regional tournament. His team was ranked like #5 or so in the province most of the year, but they lost their league games to the other private school.
I don’t know if he’s a Pac-10 kid skillwise (although the highlights are very impressive), but I know he’s really respected as a kid by people up here. His older brother was one of the bigger knuckleheads I ever coached against and ended up quitting/getting kicked off at least two different high school teams. But I’ve NEVER heard someone say anything bad about Emerson as a kid. He’s quite well liked by players and coaches as far as I can tell.

Thanks for the insight
That’s awesome. I also don’t think he’s a point guard, but I believe the video suggests he could handle himself competently there for limited stretches.
I have to stop, or I’ll give away my whole post!
Good insight
I thought of him as more of a combo guard than anything else. The video shows him handling, but it also seems like a “best guy on the squad” situation.
Great crossover tho

It was pretty much a one-man team this year.
Last year his team had a couple of talented 6’6" – 6’7" guys and a couple of other decent role players. I didn’t see them this year, but everybody said other than him the cupboard was pretty bare there (I believe that because the other private school they lost out to had a pretty unimpressive team aside from their star guard).
It’s definitely a “best guy on the team” scenario, kind of like how Kelly Olynyk from Gonzaga played the point in Grade 10 when he was 6’3". He wasn’t a pure PG at all, he was a shooting wing, but he was the most competent guy to get the ball up the floor (and I think my team held him scoreless). That type of thing is really common up here, there aren’t that many kids with basic ballhandling skills, so a lot of times coaches just keep the ball in their best kids’ hands at all times.

So in your opinion
does he have the ball skills to bring it up and spell Reggie for 10 minutes?
by Fightfightfight on Apr 1, 2010 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions
I don't really think so.
I’d be perfectly happy for the Cougs to get him, but I’d be pretty worried about him having to be a primary ballhandler too often next year.
He’s gotten some coaching, but it’s a huge leap from high school in BC to playing the point in the Pac-10. There have been very few guards from up here that were able to step in and play the point in the NCAA right away. Even Nash played the 2 as a freshmen at Santa Clara.
by Coug Friendly Canuck on Apr 1, 2010 12:02 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't know how often he would have to
I’m OK with bringing him in as an athlete and scorer, if that’s what he can be, and handling the backup PG role in a PG by committee with some combination of our guards if we have to. Again, it’s not ideal but it’s probably better than nothing.
So it looks like if we land this kid (and I hope we do)
we still need a backup PG. I know they are not extremely hard to get but the fact remains we still need one on the roster.
I wouldn't use two scholarships on two guards at this point
Maybe, if one of our project bigs develops, it would be OK, but using two schollys on a combo guard and backup PG wouldn’t be the best idea. It all depends on if Watson/Bjornstad/Charlie come to play this offseason or not.

Watjornquistum?
Or is everybody else as confident as me that Brock will be an impact player next year?
by Coug Friendly Canuck on Apr 1, 2010 12:45 PM PDT reply actions
Not as a big
As a wing, probably, but I wouldn’t put him in the same class as Watjornquist. Different kinds of players.
He can be
But it’s going to take some serious time with the weights to get there. I see him as a 3/4 spot combo right now. Kind of like what Nik and Abe did this year. Unless, of course, he adds a good amount of bulk before the season.
Even if he bulks up
I doubt he ever becomes a better post presence than Casto. They are comparable in height and Casto already has bulk/athleticism on Brock. This isn’t a knock on Motum, he has a great skill set that con make big time contributions for the cougs, I just don’t see him developing into a consistent post presence. As a 3/4 that can stroke it, however, he can be very effective for us.
by Fightfightfight on Apr 1, 2010 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions
I don't see Motum as a 3 at all, I think he's a 4.
I don’t have any problem with Casto as a 5 next year, but I’d certainly welcome a banger to help him out/back him up. I do have traumatic memories of Garcia, Rower, Kordsmeier, Bellegarde et al., however.
by Coug Friendly Canuck on Apr 1, 2010 1:17 PM PDT up reply actions
Casto has to be a 5
I hate using the whole 1-2-3-4-5 naming system, as you may have noticed, but Casto is the exception. He has to play deep in the post and back to the basket. What I’d rather call Motum, right now at least, is a post-wing. Until he bulks up and is able to bang as a post, he’s going to spend much of his time on the wing, or setting screens, which he’s fine at. He has the post moves right now, he just doesn’t have the size and strength yet.
I've always seen Casto
as more of a natural 4. He isn’t quite big enough to really bang in the post, but has the athleticism and quicks to play the power forward. It would require some better ball handling and some outside shooting, but I think that is what Casto is naturally built to do. He is definitely the best 5 on the team right now though. Hopefully Bjorn develops and can let Casto do his thing away from the bucket.
by Fightfightfight on Apr 1, 2010 3:13 PM PDT up reply actions
He's an undersized 5
There’s no chance that Casto can do anything away from the basket. It’s a skill set he doesn’t have and one that isn’t easily developed for him. If you’ve seen him shoot, he doesn’t have the form to have a midrange game at all. He also can’t handle the ball and work off the dribble, which you need to have to play a 4. Asking him to develop that skill set is something that isn’t going to come, especially if it hasn’t shown itself in two years already. The last thing I’d want to do is to take Casto away from the basket.
there is nothing about casto's game that is 4ish
other than he was smaller than Baynes.
It's also possible he doesn't put on much at all
It’s just up to his body. I know Robbie Cowgill had a different frame — Motum’s looks like it can add weight — but he never really put on much weight at all.
robbie never had a drastic change
but he looked significantly heavier his junior year than his freshman year.
and certainly stronger.
Vince said in an interview with Ian
That he thinks Bone will eventually want to try Brock at the 5. He likes to have a 5 in the floor who can shoot 3’s in order to draw the other team’s bigs out to the arc.
Sure, but positions don't matter in his offense
Casto is going to be your post, he has to be. Motum could be a post-wing, as he has the skill set for both (great post moves, but lack of size, and has range). You really don’t need positions in the offense, though, as they’re all interchangeable. Moore can run the offense or play an off guard. Klay can be a SG or SF. Nik was a combo guard that rebounded and so on. Depending on the set he runs, everyone on the floor can be a different position each time down the floor. This is why I don’t like to get caught up in who plays where. The only two positions that are set are who initiates the offense (usually Moore) and our post player (always Casto when he’s in).
