A&M's board of regents expected to choose SEC | Houston Chronicle
"In taking all things in consideration, A&M’s leadership is intrigued by playing in the nation’s premier football conference, drawing big crowds to Kyle Field from SEC fan bases that tend to travel well, and a much bigger annual payout from the league, the insider said."
Later in the story, A&M leadership also said they're looking forward to getting their faces kicked in by Florida and LSU on an annual basis.
Actually, they didn't say that. Because they're not smart enough to realize that's what's going to happen.

Well, there's more than one positive here
It allows Scott to pick one of KU and Utah and also ensures the demise of the Big 12, despite any last ditch effort by Beebe.
Oh, and one more thing
It allows the rest of the schools leaving to point at NU and A&M as scapegoats.
I think it's got to be Kansas, don't you?
They’ll be in with the other former Big 12 schools, and my guess is those guys would rather play Kansas than Utah. I’ll bet Scott let’s them pick.
And by the way
Can I just say I much prefer Kansas to Utah just for the mere fact that Kansas will have to play basketball in Pullman at some point?
Give me Kansas over Utah
I know this is all about football, but call me crazy for wanting KU b-ball over Utah football. Kansas playing at Pullman for hoops? That sounds good to me.
Well, he's been to SLC this weekend and is on his way to Kansas tonight or tomorrow.
In fact, he’s been in SLC twice in the last 2 weeks.
As a Longhorn Lurker
Wading thru the SBNation Pac-10 blogs to see what the reaction is out there – it does make me a little sad that a&m would split and go to the SEC. Hey, they gotta do what they feel is in their best interest. But to the point you made in the original post Jeff, do they not see what happened (and is happening) to Arkansas – the last team to leave the fold for the greener pastures of the SEC? Never to be seen or heard from again.

Let A&M go
I have gotten the sense from many posts and comments over the last week that there are some serious sour grapes concerning the “loss” of A&M. I would like to think that they would be getting their faces kicked in by USC or Oregon or Cal or us on a yearly basis. I don’t think it takes LSU or Florida to do so.
I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. Ugh
I don't disagree with you in theory
But this move just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. It seems like they’re more intrigued with the idea of the SEC than the reality, which is that it’s a very difficult football conference with, frankly, lower standards academically than the conference it’s leaving.
I think it is better that they leave
So long as they don’t blow up all of Scott’s hard work, I think we are better off. I always had the sense that UT and A&M were attached at the hip – so much so that we had to take A&M. I don’t like the Aggies. I never have. It’s nothing spiteful, I just don’t think that they are very good at anything. Give me Kansas basketball.
It’s too bad we won’t get to see Mangino get stuck in the Martin Stadium tunnel though.

Oh ya I forgot.
Oh well probably wasn’t enough space for him in the areas hotels anyways.
That's why it's too bad
I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. Ugh
This is true
Plus I think the belief is it will help with recruiting – convincing kids that they will be able to play on a bigger stage and closer to home. Personally, I think they just made it harder for themselves. The state has always been a big target – it now becomes even bigger for the Sabans and Meyers of the world now that the front door has been opened for them.

I think you hit it on the head.
If I’m a school, I want a move to benefit me at least as much as it does those that I’m joining. I just don’t think that’s the case for A&M here.
What's amazing to me
Again as a Longhorn (must state biases here) – that a lot of this move smacks of “you can’t tell us what to do.” We have fun with the aggs calling them “little brother” (among other things), but this really has a cut off nose to spite face vibe to it. I hope I’m wrong – but the sadistic in me is kinda looking forward to the results.

So much of it just doesn't make sense
As a fan of WSU, we are probably similar to aTm in many ways. We get the little brother complex as well, and so I could understand wanting to tell the big brother to go to h**l.
That said, they are putting themselves in a bad position. The money will increase regardless of where they go, but at least they have knowledge of the Big XII teams that they would be in a division with in the new Pac 16. And now, going to the SEC, they will have to schedule nonconference games against Texas. Great for you guys, as Texas gets a non conference game against a team from a top tier conference, and you get to win that game at a 70% clip unless things drastically change. aTm gets to take up one of their cupcake games and lose to the rival that they should be playing as a conference game.
Don’t know if my explanation makes sense, but I just see little upside for aTm. That said, I won’t be sad to see them go. They are making their own bed, and the Pac gets to choose someone new and probably more intriguing.
Texas has said
That if aggie goes to another conference, they will not schedule any games against a&m in any sport. Not that it should be a deterrent, but there would be no OOC games between the two former rivals if this goes thru.

Wow, that is a twist
Interesting that Texas is OK with just letting the rivalry die if they aren’t in the same conference. Thanks for the info.
Not so fast
I don’t think there’s anything in the Chron article I haven’t heard or seen elsewhere.
Part of this may just be that A&M doesn’t want to be seen as a Texas follower… and they buy in to the common idea in the South that the SEC has no competition whatsoever as ’world’s greatest football conference’.
However, if they go back on it now and still join the Pac they will be viewed as making the decision on their own and not because UT told them to. Add that to the fact Tex. Gov. Rick Perry is an Aggie and reportedly against joining the SEC, and I’m not sure it’s such a done deal… yet.
Still, smart money is on A&M taking their ego with them and becoming the 8th biggest athletic department in the SEC. Meanwhile we can pick of Kansas or Utah and be just fine.
Texas is still the key. if the Longhorns sign on the dotted line, it’s time to celebrate. If they balk, we will end the day as the Pac-12.
Of course, then again
If they just joined the Pac on Friday they definitely wouldn’t be seen as following Texas. So it looks highly probable they go to the SEC.
I'd honestly rather have Utah or Kansas
aTm doesn’t really mean much for TV revenue…but adding Utah or Kansas can pick up the 31st or 32nd largest market respectively and add nearly 1 million households and an entire state into our footprint.
I was reading some of the comments on this article
A&M fans are delusional…they really think that going to the SEC to get stomped on by LSU, UF, UGA and Bama is going to help them, while Texas coming in to a conference where Oklahoma (in there division) is the only real threat is going to wreck them. Also, I didn’t see anybody there mention basketball, if we add Kansas, that is going to be a murderers row.
They’ll finally be out of the shadow of UT, but now they’ll be in the shadow of the “big bad SEC” and all of the pagentry that goes with it.
Note to self: College Station has good drugs.
Obviously didn't do his research properly...
4. It’s a better fit geographically
* —2,091 miles to Washington St. vs 1,040 miles to Columbia, SC. These would be the furthest schools from College Station. I’ll take half the distance any day of the week. Yeah, yeah, I’ve heard all the arguments about how little travel there would be, but that’s football. Everyone forgets basketball, baseball and all the other sports that travel midweek and a lot more often.
It's pretty crazy that the former big 12 teams
will go to at least 4 different conferences once this all shakes out, maybe more. PAC, SEC, Big 10, then either MWC/current conference/CUSA/who knows.
It’s kinda sad, many of these teams have been in the same conference longer than the pac-10 schools have been together.
Question on Kansas
Wouldn’t Kansas require KSU to go with them? Thought I read that somewhere (e.g. Texas & TTech)?
In talking to a former PX AD, Utah would be the choice……
That was the thought
It appears to have been shot down in the last couple days though. Nothing’s for sure at this point.
