Unfortunate news - Watson to transfer

EDIT NUSS: This has not yet been officially confirmed, although previous reports did indicate that Watson has had academic challenges. Make of it what you will.

EDIT NUSS 2: Grippi has now officially confirmed.

First, still a rookie to this board, so not sure what distinguishes a "fanpost" vs "fanshot" but this one's easier. : )

Heard today that James Watson will not be eligible this fall and therefore will be transfering to a community college closer to home. It's a tough blow to the program, but the fact of the matter is he would not be academically eligible until January, and he has struggled to make the transition to a major university. This is a good move for HIM, personally, and will allow him to get at least a AA degree, while also working on his offensive game. And once done, he'll be able to play D1 without sitting out a year, and will still have 2 full years of eligibility (2 for 2).

Now's it's on Charlie, Steven, Abe, Motum & Simon to really work hard & provide Casto the inside help we need! And on the brightside, this frees up more minutes for Charlie & Steven inside, which should help them develop faster. This will definitely hurt us early, and definitely a setback, but by the end of the year we may have developed a quality inside post player (& Steven is a good shooter who just lacks footwork & confidence right now) who's going to pay big dividends in the future. Although I still wish Steven would have redshirted last year, we need to remember Baynes looked bad in practice early, and started to jell near the end of his soph year.

I'm sure the staff is and has been looking for bigs, but at this late date it's rare to pick up someone, although we didn't add Bjornstad until the summer last year.

Best wishes to James' and his future. Once a Coug, always a Coug!

wow, tough break for James

i have no idea about his learning capabilities, so I won’t comment, but maybe it’s for the best for him.

as far as WSU goes, I hate to downplay this, but I just didn’t see the potential in Watson other people saw. It sucks from a bodies standpoint, but not necesarily a talent one. Onward.

I'm with you to some degree on his ceiling

Had the game of a 4 but the body of a 3 and the basketball instincts of a 6th grader. I don’t know that he ever was going to develop into the kind of player a lot of people thought he would.

What I don’t understand is why now? If academics were going to be a problem — you cite the transition — you’d think that would have happened last year. Or even next year, as year 3 heading into a major can be difficult. Weird.

I think Bjorn may have taken most of his minutes by November regardless.

my uneducated opinion. to piggy-back onto SD’s point, Bjorn has a better frame for what we need and he didn’t look lost anchoring the zone in his limited minutes (whereas plugging Watson into that zone was a weakside dunk waiting to happen).

I think when JuCo is involved, you may want to hold off as long as you can before you pull the trigger. there’s always going to be a JuCo closer to home that will take you if things at the big school don’t work out.

Why now?

Ultimately, he stayed eligible during his 1st year, but struggled during year 2, especially in the Spring. But I don’t think its ever been easy for him IMO (he seems to be easily distracted & likes the ladies! He’s not the first to fall victim!!). And seeing 7 credits this summer plus a fall which may have produced a tougher class load may have been too big of an obstacle, so better to get the AA now & get playing time than risk sitting out a year of hoops AGAIN if he didn’t gain eligibility come January.

I love his energy & athleticism, and he’s a good kid. But I think he may have been better served playing CC ball to begin with, so now he’ll have that chance.

Again, really a fan of James’ so wishing him the best!

On the Fanpost vs. Fanshot

If you’re linking an article, picture, etc with little of your commentary, use a fanshot. Something like this, where you can easily breeze past the 75 word minimum and are writing your own work fits within a fanpost.

Tough break for Watson and WSU. I had hoped he would succeed here, especially given his story. If true, hopefully he is able to keep it going closer to home and continue to improve.

Grippi confirms

Nice work with the scoop, SD.

Watson will transfer to a JC in Kansas.

Kind of on the same subject

Because he would get James’ scholarship, but Reggie just tweeted Mike Ladd is coming to WSU next year. He’s the forward with whom Reggie committed to Fresno St. so it’s kind of believable. Then again, it’s quickly followed by a tweet that Wullf should offer Masoli a scholarship so who knows?

Yeah I think this hurts from a depth perspective, but it's not going to kill us, either.

Having said that, I really liked him. I thought he would have been a good high-energy guy off the bench. Probably never an impact starter, but a fan favorite that can dunk and block a shot while screaming and pounding his chest. Not sure you can ever have enough of those. I’m with SD on this…once a Coug, always a Coug.

The best part about the entire FanPost was this, “Now’s it’s on Charlie, Steven…”

I was reading and halfway paying attention because my girlfriend was text messaging me, and I read that as “Now it’s on Charlie Sheen…” and I was so confused.
