Coug Center Beer Post
For those of you that didn't notice, we hijacked another FanPost and turned it into our very own beer post. Instead of hiding it behind the veil of a Scout vs. Rivals post, it's time to bring beer to the forefront.
I know there has to be a lot of beer lovers here, so what are your favorite brews (if you say Bud, Coors, etc. I'm coming after you)? What do you suggest buying and where are some good places to buy them?
As a side note, who can tell me where I can find Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA near Kent, WA? I'll be forever indebted to you if you can kindly point me in the right direction.
This FanPost does not necessarily reflect the views of the site's writers or editors, who may not have verified its accuracy. It does, however, reflect the views of this particular fan, which is just as important as the views of our writers or editors.

I haven't had the 120.
But I’ve had the 90 on tap and it is delicious. The 60 is bland, bland, bland, especially considering the price point.

I've had the 90 plenty of times (delicious)
And I’ve heard the 120 is to die for. It will also knock you flat apparently.
18% ABV will do that to you.

This wont be helpful
But there is a place here in CO down the street from my house that has me spending more money on beer than I did in college. Not an easy feat.
They have singles of the 120, and it is in fact delicious. You have to REALLY like the IPA style in order to enjoy it though, as that flavor you find in the 90 is exponentially greater. Its still smooth though which is quite impressive.
Boy do I ever love the IP style
And I just read the next batch is coming in early August. I don’t want to wait!
I LOVE THE IPA STYLE.
Once you get hooked on it, it is hard to drink anything else.
Also, the liquor store down from me has the 120 if you want to come visit, Brian.

There is a beer store near my house
Called 99 Bottles, you could give them a call and see if they have it. It is in Federal Way. They have a pretty extensive beer selection, and their store is pretty sweet.
I'm just going to make a random trip up there this week
I was at BottleWorks in Wallingford Saturday and have wanted to go to 99 Bottles forever. It’s close to where I live yet I’ve never been. It sounds like a magical place.
If any of you are ever east of the mountains, Yakima and Ellensburg both have excellent breweries.
Iron Horse makes a hearty stout called “Irish Death.” I miss it terribly.
I also miss Hale’s Red Ale. The only red I’ve ever loved.
CougCenter WSU's second main blog
One thing I LOVE about living in Yakima
Irish Death is on tap at 75% of local bars. Check that, 100% of the bars I go to.
I am not a fan of dropping $11 on a 6 pack for it, though.

I'm a fan of ambers
Not much for spending tons of money to go off the beaten path, so I generally get Alaskan Amber or MacTarnahan’s, if I can find it. I’m also a huge fan of Smithwick’s.
If you’re into summer brews, I can recommend the Twighlight Summer Ale from Deschutes. Light weight without tasting like a light beer (looking your way, Red Hook and Pyramid).
I thought you did on purpose because a certain book that has ruined that word forever.

I have family down south.
The first time I had sweet tea I realized that’s how everyone down south gets diabetes. That there is approx. 1.5 fried chicken restaurants for every household down there explains why the Bible belt is hidden by a massive gut.
You are correct about how unhealthy they are, po boy sandwich for another example.
To balance that out, there are tons of good tasting food. Sadly some will not be served because of the oil spill.

What? You don't enjoy humidity?
I love the feeling of walking about outside and it feels like you are wearing your clothes in a shower or sauna room.
FYI: My parents live in Tacoma and they said they haven’t seen a Chick-fil-a there, so I was curious and looked it up. There is only one Chick-fil-a in all the Northwest. It is in Bellingham at WWU. It looks like Chick-fil-a has hit everywhere, but the Lewis and Clark trail. Just a some fun facts for your knowledge.

Aside from Nashville's Yazoo, another brewery I really like down here is Terrapin our of Athens, Georgia.
They make a “Brown IPA.” It is nutty and hoppy at the same time.
CougCenter WSU's second main blog
Right now my two favorite beers
Deschutes’ Hophenge IPA and Great Divide’s Hercules Double IPA.
On the Belgian side – Ommegang Brewery in Cooperstown, NY makes some amazing brew.
I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. Ugh
New Belgium has a few good ones...
I usually like Pale Ales, but I’m not really a huge fan of theirs (Mighty Arrow). But Skinny Dip is a great summer seasonal, and 2 Below is one of my favorite winter seasonals. Friends who like the dark stuff (I don’t) LOVE their 1554.
Otherwise, the wife or I go to Bellingham enough that we take our Growlers up to Boundary Bay Brewery, where I’ll drink most anything they keep on tap at least once.
Not a big fan
I didn’t think Boundary Bay had enough of a distinctive taste. When I go to a brewpub, I want to taste the signature in their beers. Every one of Deschutes beers has a unifying flavor because of their malting technique. Perhaps I need to give Boundary Bay a second chance … what do you recommend I try?
I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. Ugh
As I said, I'm a fan of the lighter stuff...
so I go with the Blonde, Pilsner or the Maibock. Though if I’m at the local roller derby beer garden, by the second bout I’m drinking the Scotch.
Friends also recommend the Oatmeal Stout for something dark, hearty and different.
by TiltingRight on Jul 14, 2010 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions
Boundary Bay is awesome.
It’s the largest privately owned brewery in the country, which is quite a feat.
That said, the IPA, ESB and Oatmeal Stout are my favorites from there. Anyone of those with a delicious Boundary Burger at the brewhouse is my definition of heaven (aside from WSU winning football/Basketball championships and the Hawks winning the SB)

I like Ambers and Ales
I’ll third the Twilight, it is a good summer brew. The best summer brew in my opinion was Lazy Days from Grant’s, which unfortunately is not around anymore. They also had a very good Mandarin Hefeweizen.
If you can find it where you guys are, Yakima Craft Brewing makes a good Amber Ale. Fish Tale Ale out of Olympia makes a great Organic Amber if you are in that area. Snipes out of Sunnyside has some good beer as well.
If you like Brown Ales, Moose Drool is always a good choice. Big Sky Brewery has a good sample room if you are around Missoula. If or when you go to Hawaii, don’t miss the Kona Brewing company , they make a very good Brown Ale with a hint of coconut in it. They have a bunch of different beers there actually that you can’t get on the mainland. You can get the Longboard Logger and Firerock Pale Ale here, which are both good though. For a darker beer, you can also get the Pipeline Porter here. They also have some great food at the brewery in Kona, not sure about the pubs on Oahu.
If you do like the darker beers, Irish Death is well liked as mentioned above, my wife loves it.

Love Love Love
However, drinking only one of these will leave you feeling hung over the next morning … worth it though.
I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. Ugh
Been drinking Alaskan White quite a bit recently
sort of like Blue Moon but a little heartier
A buddy of mine works for his dad at a beer & wine distributorship
So I get to try a lot of crazy beers like from Japan and the Czech Republic. (Side note, The Czech consume the most beer per capita by far.)
One night, him and I had about 15-20 new beers to taste. There’s something awesome about drinking new beer after new beer. The downside is it is hard to remember the really good ones.
Dogfish Head
Is the greatest brewery on the planet in my world. If you have not been to a place that has a lot of specialty beers, you wont really know what I am talking about in this comment, as some of their beers are pretty rare.
There are two beers from these people that have changed my life.
Burton Buton is an oak barrel aged IPA. The flavor is somewhat similar to the 90 min IPA from Dogfish, but also includes a bit of something else from the ageing process that allows that great flavor at a solid 10% alc.
Old School is the greatest beer on the planet, hands down. Its Dogfish’s barleywine style ale. You can trick your friends with this one as it is smooth as hell, almost sweet in its flavor, but still hoppy. If you gave them 2 they would be on their asses in no time, and wouldn’t even see it coming. 15%. Fan Freeking Tastic.
OH BTW
When I am traveling on business, I use this website to find great beer ANYWHERE. I once found a grocery store in a very tiny town in Michigan that carried all of my favorites.
http://beeradvocate.com/beerfly/
You might be able to find those coveted beers I talked about above in a place near you.
According to that site.
You can find Dogfish 120 at MSM Deli in Tacoma and 99 Bottles in Federal Way.

Oddly enough Top Foods (Haggen) has a decent beer selection here
Had a bunch of Stone, Ninkasi, and Dogfish Head beers along with some of the local breweries.
My favorites are still Old Rasputin and Arrogant Bastard (hard to have more than one of em though)
If anyone lives in Skagit or Island Counties I’d suggest Flyer’s Brewpub in Oak Harbor. They’ve got a great Porter and a damn fine Amber. It’s right on Hwy 20 on the North side of town, plus they make a pretty good steak.
As much of a beer snob as I am, my standby has always been a Henry’s Private Reserve or Killians. I generally save my good stash for special occasions.
Also, does anyone else here brew? I always like to talking brewing with people as I’m still fairly new to it.

Silver City Brewing in Silverdale
I have only been there a few times, both with my parents who live out that way. But I know that they had a scotch ale that I loved, and a double IPA that was great.
Their website calls them the Fat Scotch Ale and the Whoop Pass Double IPA. I have rarely seen them in the city, but Silver City brewing does show up on tap occassionally and I’ve always liked it.
Oh, if you want to check out their website
Go here. http://www.silvercitybrewery.com/the_beer.htm
Also, good enough food that my parents go there consistently despite not drinking beer.
Silver City is awesome

My favorite beer name of all time
comes from Dick’s brewery in eugene I believe, and it is their “Danger” ale. The bottle simply reads “Dick Danger.” The ale is mediocre (I’m an IPA kind of guy, ales don’t really do it for me) but the name was so great I had to get a sixer.

without mentioning Busch Light. Will we all be struck by lightening?
That said, Pullman now has 2 breweries, Paradise Creek and Palouse Falls. I like both for different reasons, but I recommend when you all come to town this Fall you give them both taste. I’m especially pleased that the “Crimson” at Palouse Falls is my favorite. Coincidence?
I forgot about those breweries but I liked both when I tried them.

Two great microbrew places
In Tacoma there is a little bar called Engine House 9. It is in an old Engine House and in the summer they open the roll up doors, which creates a great atmosphere. When I used to go on Tuesdays they had $2 pints of their micro-brews. I like the White Belgium and the Oatmeal Stout.
http://www.ehouse9.com/
If you are ever in the Redlands, California region there is a new bar called Hanger 24, located in an old plane hanger. They have a great Orange Wheat beer. Their beer has already become so popular that it is starting to spread throughout the southern California region—to places like Applebee’s and Yardhouse. They are also serving them at local minor league parks (Rancho Cucamunga Quakes & Inland Empire 66ers.)

I just googled to see if there was a "drunkfast" branded beer/drink.
There wasn’t, but there were a lot of Yahoo answers listings of people asking how to get drunk fast. How big of a nerd are you if you need to look up on the internet how to get drunk?
I've made the perfect beer already...
it was supposed to be a high ABV porter, but it turned into a beer flavored syrup. Our yeast didn’t quite work up to snuff, so we ended up with an 8.9% ABV beer that comes in at around 550 calories a pint.
Straight up it’s so strong that I’ve made one person vomit. We actually floated the idea of creating a “beer concentrate” and suggest people water it down to a lower gravity. It’s really quite good when you hit it with a little drinking water.
Went to Brewfest on the Portland waterfront yesterday...
It was pretty much heaven. Overpriced, but heaven.
A lot I didn't recognize, but they had a lot of the major microbreweries from the west coast.
Widmer, Stone, Rogue, Deschutes, MacTarnahans, etc.
Also saw Dogfishhead, but unfortunately they were out when I got there.
I had a new McMenamins beer, think it was an IPA, that was delicious. It was at the buzz tent, though, which means you can only get tasters… sad face.
