AUDIO: CougCenter Interviews Paul Wulff
This is something we've been working on getting done for some time now, and it finally came together today when we were able to snag head football coach Paul Wulff for about 15 minutes before he shuffled off to a coaches meeting. Among the topics discussed include how the increased depth is helping the team prepare, the disappointment of the offensive line the last two years, why Coug fans should get invested in this team, and more.

By the way
It’s hard to come away from that interview and not feel excited about where the program is heading. I know the proof will be in the pudding this fall, but I find myself really liking this guy more and more. I badly want him to succeed.

Nice music at the end.
Made the Podcast sound completely professional with that. You are right, I am also finding myself liking Wulff more and more. I really hope he turns this thing around and I think he will. I also think he is get better as a coach and as a interviewee. I don’t know if it was you, but he was really relaxed in that interview. I can feel this program turning around from the new facilities, the new players, new coaches and new athletic director. I look forward (like Wulff said) to the growth in this program in the coming years. It will be like watching your kid grow up.

I forgot to say. Nice job in the interview.

I know, but I always forget to listen to the last 5-10 seconds. My bad.
Maybe, it was because the music sounded different or it was eased in sooner. Is it the same?

It's the same.
But I would skip the last ten seconds after listening to 45 minutes of me blabbing on.

Don't you mean 30 minutes of ME babbling on
And 15 minutes of you and Grady trying to squeeze a word in edgewise?
I've gone on some "you know-laced" diatribes myself.
Just depends how much beer I’ve had before.

I don't think the relaxation had anything to do with me
We didn’t spend a lot of time establishing rapport since he had to run off so quickly. I think he’s just feeling good about where the program is going. I interpreted it as a quiet confidence.
I thought you may have chatted it up with him before the interview.
Since you didn’t chat it up with him, I agree with you that he is developing a confidence that things are coming together — this confidence came across in your interview with him. I think he finally feels like this is developing into “his” team and these last 2 days has helped to reinforce that. It is good to hear.

Thanks for the listen, Jeff.
I am PUMPED for this upcoming football season, and I too hope Wulff can really right this ship. Great job.
Great stuff Jeff.
One of my favorite Wulffisms is how he always refers to players by their full name.
Q: Coach, who is going to start at running back?
Typical answer: Montgomery will start if healthy with Staden, Mitz and others contributing.
Wulff Answer: Well certainly we expect a James Montgomery to be a big part of our football team, but then we also have a guy like Carl Winston, a guy like Chantz Staden a Logwone Mitz who will contribute and help us win football games.

Im excited
and I think that is the biggest difference between this year and last: there is reason for optimism. I just pray now that we as fans aren’t setting up for a major disappointment.
Oh, and my favorite part of the interview? The fact that Wulff pronounces “mature” like “ma-toor”. Thats a sign of a sophisticated coach.
What? You pooped in the refrigerator? And you ate the whole... wheel of cheese? How'd you do that? Heck, I'm not even mad; that's amazing. - Ron Burgandy
Great Interview
but I must say I’m still skeptical. I think he’s taking the right steps the rebuild the program but we’re really yet to see how he does with athletes that can compete at the Pac10 level. I’d really like to see a win on the road this year and hopefully he can show us how much more he can do with less. He’s working hard but there are still be some questions that the last 2 years haven’t been able to answer
The last 2 years he was trying to bake a cake with no ingredients.
He almost got some sugar and flour, but a torn ACL and near-death experience later, his cake didn’t taste very good.

Agreed
getting the right ingredients is key to making a fair analysis of his overall ability to win at this level. With 3 recruiting classes on campus now will this year a make or break year for him? and is it fair to judge his if the lack of competition continues? I think so and I really hope we jump up and surprise some people
I think my favorite part of the entire thing was when he said "we WILL have success [on offense]"
He wasn’t saying, “I believe we will eventually” or “I sure think we will” or anything like that. He was saying it as if he were stating a fact, not giving his opinion. I love love love that.
Also, Nusser actually talked to CPW? That makes him famous. And since I’ve met Jeff in person and played Xbox with him, that makes me famous in a roundabout sorta way. YAY FOR QUASI-FAME!
Once you talk to enough players and coaches
You realize they’re just people. Sometimes people with a warped sense of reality, but people all the same. They just happen to be able to coach or play a sport people will pay a lot of money to watch.
My favorite part of the interview is that Wulff seems like an incredibly down-to-earth, grounded guy. And from my experience, in high school and college, that will trickle down to the team, which I think is a great thing at a university such as WSU.
I meant what I said. I BADLY want him to succeed. To go through what he has the past two years and continue to stand up with the confidence he does is nothing short of remarkable. I’m getting to the point where I’M starting to believe him.
