CougCenter Beer Thread: Round Two

Since Craig and I can't seem to stay on topic without talking about beer, let's give a beer thread another go around.

I think I can speak for both of us when I say the last thread was hard on our bank accounts and livers, but fantastic on our taste buds. Craig brought home a couple of Dogfish 120's and has taunted me ever since. The bad news out of Delaware also came out. RIP summer batch of 120. I won't be seeing 120 until the end of the year.

Beer of the moment: Hop in the Dark. If you've never had a CDA (black IPA), it's high time you tried it. These are delicious. Dogfish Burton Baton follows in a very close 2nd.

Intriguing beer: Dogfish-Stone-Victory Sasson du BUFF. I had the Stone version of the beer a few weeks back. These three breweries teamed up to create a collaboration beer, with Stone releasing their batch first, followed recently by Dogfish and Victory. They're all the same brew, just made at different places.

Ridiculously expensive beer that should be tasty: Deschutes Jubel 2010. Brewed once every 10 years, I'm really looking forward to this.

Foreign beer: Piraat. This strong belgian will knock you flat, but you'll be happy about it.

Crab fisherman's beer: I had the Rouge Captian Sig Ale last week and was delightfully surprised. Anyone else tried it?

What else should I be on the lookout for? Any fall seasonals coming that are must haves? Please don't make me spend loads of money on beer again.

Budget Beer

I have many friends who are always on the look out for the cheapest beer. It is almost a competition. They text each other on when they find that deal. For those of you who live in California, Nevada and Arizona you can get a 12-pack of Steel Kettle Whistle Light for $3.99 at Fresh&Easy stores. They are basically paying you to drink (after you recycle).

They have good prices to go along with the name Fresh&Easy.

I thought it also sounds like an 80’s rap group.

My Beer of the Moment

back on Dale’s Pale Ale. I’m not much of a hop head, but DPA is quality.

I also recently re-discovered Rogue’s Hazlenut Brown and Chipotle Ale. I just got back into town from SoCal, so I need to restock, perhaps I shall find this Hop in the Dark. Sig’s Ale wasn’t bad. Rogue has always been my favorite brewery (Russian River is up there also), so I’m always biased towards them, but it was pretty damn tasty.

by B Money on Aug 22, 2010 5:25 AM PDT reply actions

I got confused
Russian River North Coast is up there also

Russian River is good, but I’m not as huge on them as some of my beer buddies.

I tried that PranQster at your recommendation.

Pretty good stuff. I generally gravitate towards the hoppy stuff, but I really enjoyed it.

Rogue is going to release a John John Hazelnut Brown soon/now

9 months is the whiskey barrels post whiskey before bottling. Should be a good, but haven’t had a chance to taste it yet.

Never had a brown aged in barrells before

sounds interesting, could be really good with the nuttiness.

Speaking of Dale's

Down here in CO, we get some of the other brews from Oskar Blues. Anyone ever seen Gubna? Its an imperial pale ale…..in a can. 10%, and so smooth. Its glorious.

If you haven’t heard of it, look it up.

by bucherbp on Aug 30, 2010 1:41 PM PDT up reply actions

We get a lot of CO beers in Nashville.

I’ll have to keep an eye out for that.

I manged to find the Pils and Ten Fity (I think that's what they call it)

the Ten Fity was like drinking syrup (insert Jamarcus Russel joke here). Also Old Chub is readily available up here as well.

by B Money on Sep 2, 2010 12:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I tried Sig's Ale a few months back.

Like you, I was pleasantly surprised.

I’ll have to try that Burton Barton from Dogfish. I’ve seen it in the store before.

Also should report that I had a Dogfish 120 last week.

Surprisingly smooth. It tastes like a heavier version of the 90. Has a strong sweetness and the hops are very present, but not overpowering.

It smells like straight booze when you pour it, but doesn’t have that flavor at all. After the one bottle, I have to say I was feeling pretty good (It is 18%, so basically has the alcohol content of about 4 shots of hard liquor).

A heavier version of the 90?

whoa, I had the 90 last week for the first time, and it was, well, heavy. I love it, don’t get me wrong. But I’m not sure I could do heavier, unless it were, say, 18%.

by spencer peaty on Aug 23, 2010 11:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Burton Baton is delicious

It’s a bit stronger than the 90 minute but ridiculously smooth. I bought a couple of them a while back and was very happy with the decision. Then again, I haven’t been disappointed in any Dogfish brews.

by Brian Floyd on Aug 22, 2010 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Burton Baton

Is my number 2 on my favs list. Right behind Old School, Dogfish’s Barleywine Style Ale.

by bucherbp on Aug 30, 2010 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Also, Twilight Summer Ale

And pretty much anything from Deschutes. I’ve been on a Deschutes kick lately.

by Brian Floyd on Aug 22, 2010 2:59 PM PDT reply actions

Not a fan of Summer Ales.

But my all time favorite “summer-ish” beer has to be the Huckleberry Ale from Coeur D’Alene Brewery. Haven’t had it in three years because it is not easy to find, sadly.

I tried Hop in the Dark tonight

and it was effin’ outstanding, I hadn’t had a CDA before. I also grabbed a bottle of Ninkasi Radiant Seasonal, I’m looking for a good light summer ale that I can get behind for next year.

I also need to pick up a bottle of Jubel before they’re gone. I can’t wait for some of the winter seasonals to come around.

Sadly the makers of "Bacon Beer" have went out of business.

Friday Harbor Brewing Company (or something like that). It was actually pretty good. Definitely something you see and have to try.

Bacon Beer still exists! It can be found on the Central Coast of CA from a local brewery, Uncommon Brews. Got a good taste of at the Monterey Beer Festival, good stuff, but more than one glass and it gets pretty rich…

Old Rasputin is the best stout there is

For stuff that is in a normal grocery store. Black Butte Porter is pretty solid. Rogue Shakespeare Stout, Guinness Extra Stout, and Kona Pipeline Porter are all good.

Craig pretty much nailed it

But Rogue also makes an excellent Chocolate Stout and an above average Mocha Porter that you can pick up for around 4-5 bucks a bomber.

If you’re in the north sound area, try Flyers Brewpub in Oak Harbor. They have an outstanding porter on tap there, but I don’t think they bottle. Elysian makes a quality porter that you can get on tap at any of their (Seattle Area) pubs, and maybe in bottles.

by B Money on Aug 23, 2010 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes the Chocolate Stout is delicious.

Try it with ice cream!

Never had the Mocha Porter. And yes, Elysian! Elysian makes good stuff.

I have to plug Bitburger

Found it in a 24-pack (wooooo) at Costco the other day.

Now, admittedly, part of this is I’m sentimental about a beer brewed about 15 minutes from where I lived in Germany (I was a kid, so I never drank it there, but I toured the factory). But the other part of it is that it is an incredibly tasty pilsner, brewed in a country that is absolutely insane about beers.

It’s refreshing and not too heavy, so it’s a good beer to have with dinner after work.

Nice, I crafted a couple of good ones

but I had to stop about 8 months ago (apartments are not conducive to brewing).

My favorite was an extract Neopolitan Beer that a buddy and I crafted. Pale and Chocolate Malts, a couple of split vanilla beans in the boil, and a slurry of mashed strawberries just after the vanilla was pulled. We used (I think) 4 oz. of Cascade hops for 30 min 1.5 oz of pearle hops for 20 min in the boil. Standard top fermenting ale yeast (forgot the brand) with a small hit of strawberry extract during fermentation.

It was quite good, but not spectacular. I always just love beers that push the envelope.

Tried Dogzilla this evening

and found it to be better than Hop in the Dark. I love Deschutes. I love everything about them … so much so that my wedding rehearsal dinner was held at their brewery in Bend. But, I did a side by side tasting of Hop in the Dark and Dogzilla – by Laughing Dog Brewery in Ponderay, ID – and came out liking the Dog. Give it a whirl.

Wanting to start my own brew at home

I’m a beer lover and am somewhat familiar with the process but need to get more acquainted so is there anywhere in the Seattle area I can go as kind of a one stop shop for everything I’ll need (ingredients, equipment, possibly a “how to” book, etc.)?

by Michael The Coug on Aug 30, 2010 2:19 PM PDT reply actions

Homebrew Heaven in Everett is where I go and they're great there.

Try Cellar Homebrew in Greenwood as well.

Your best link for starting to homebrew will be homebrewtalk.com . Most of the people there are super friendly and helpful.

by B Money on Sep 2, 2010 12:23 PM PDT up reply actions

A couple tips

1) You’ll want to set aside about $200 to get yourself setup proper with good equipment. Buy a good quality thermometer and definately a stainless stell brewpot. Get the idodine based sanitizer, it’s so much quicker than bleach.
2) Bottles are expensive, since it takes about 6 solid hours to de-lable and sanitize 50 bottles (about how many you’ll get from a 5 gallon batch), it might be worth it to buy some. Bombers can be had for pretty cheap at a brewshop and you’ll only need 20-25. I haven’t gotten a growler, but that would be a good idea as well if you plan on drinking it pretty quick.
3) When it comes time to bottle, I’ve had a ton more success with sugaring the whole batch than trying quick tabs or sugaring by the bottle.
4) This might be the most important if you have carpet where you’ll be fermenting it. Make your own airlock with a tube stuck into a big bowl of water. The fermentation gets violent, moreso when it’s a high gravity brew. I have stains on my floor from the dinky plastic airlock I used on my first batch.
5) Saying “bung” and “bunghole” is still funny, no matter how old you are and how much you brew.
