A look at the Cougar basketball team heading into the school year. Aden's finishing up his last class and should arrive in 2 weeks, some news on walk-ons, and updates on the weight gains the Cougs made in the offseason.

His FG and 3P%'s are starting to scare me

I must have never looked past his 23 PPG before but 43% FG% and only 32% from behind the arc is certainly not great against inferior competition.

Also, it's a little different at the JC level

They play fewer games, and it’s clear he was the best player on his team. He took a ton of shots. He obviously won’t take nearly that percentage at WSU.

I do think it’s safe to assume, however, that he’s not a great shooter. He might be adequate if he’s not taking a ton of contested 3s, but I wouldn’t expect him to get up to 40 percent. I would say 35/36 percent would be OK from him for this team’s needs.

Yep, and I don't think we ever really expected him to be a shooter.

I’d take 35 percent in a heartbeat if that’s what he’s going to shoot from 3. What we were looking for was an athletic guard that can run and score. I’d hope he’s more of a slasher that has the threat to hit from deep, not the other way around.

Agreed

Although I do remember him being billed as a shooter early on.

He's really billed as an athletic #2

Athletic; good midrange game, but not necessarily a bomber. That said, we need him to hit 3’s to free up Klay & Reggie..

It all depends how you look at it.

I believe he is a slasher-scorer. I am not say he is going to be Allen Iverson, but here are A.I.’s career numbers FG-0.425 (43%) and 3-point-0.313 (31%). Many people (not me, but he was fun to watch) consider A.I. great player. This is what he did with those stats.

a 10-time All-Star and a two-time All-Star Game MVP… has been named to a total of seven All-NBA Teams (First Team in 1998-99, 2000-01 and 2004-05; Second Team in 1999-00, 2001-02 and 2002-03; Third Team in 2005-06).

In that case, it all depends on the free throw rate

In Iverson’s peak years, he was always one of the top guards in getting to the line. Aden will have to do the same thing to make up for a low shooting percentage — if, in fact, that represents his true talent, which I doubt it does.

Motum must not have bulked up

Because it doesn’t mention him in the weight gains. That’s too bad.

We think he hasn't been weighed yet

Someone said yesterday he’s still in Australia. I would be surprised if he didn’t put on at least some weight.

I hope he put some kilograms on.

I keep forgetting that we have 7 new players coming in, That's crazy.

Aden, Simon, Winston, Kernich-Drew, Dilorio, Ladd & Morgan. Ladd has to sit a year and I think Kernich-Drew, Dilorio and Morgan will probably redshirt. We may need another guard, so one of these guys might not RS. That leaves Aden, Simon and Winston on the active roster. Hopefully, we add some big men next year.

Casto at 255??

Wow, that is some beef! He was already pretty jacked last year. Can he play football? I also love that we have Ladd coming in, even if it just keeps the Beach pipeline flowing.

Never can hurt to have more kids from Seattle. Those guys ALL talk.
