Hey everyone! Just joined and wanted to share a few thoughts. I know I'm going to take a lot of flack, here it is anyway.
I was listening to Ian Furness (of 950KJR) the other day he had Coach Jim Walden on the show. If you know Jim Walden he is a fiery guy and always has an opinion. Ian and Coach Walden were discussing the future of coach Wulff and that got Jim quite agitated it seemed. Listening to Jim’s rant made me take a deep look at the program, fellow Coug fans, and our modern day society. It made me frustrated, but something really brought me over the edge. I went on to a CougFan.com and I saw a message board posting that said: “this program is dead.” That really made me angry.
I was like most Coug fans after Oklahoma State game, speechless! I thought we would be better, all summer I heard how much bigger and stronger our team was. Why did you get our backsides handed to us again? What the hell happened? It hit me, we are a young team and a growing program. I hear Coach Wulff saying that 22 players will be taking their first college snap on Saturday in Stillwater. You are not going to win with young guys, it’s not basketball. Coach Wulff really has had two recruiting classes since he arrived from Eastern Washington. The talent is there! Look at Jeff Tuel, Marquess Wilson, and Brandon Rankin. We have good young talent. That talent in very inexperienced. You build a program it doesn’t happen over night, I know the losing really hurts and the constant national harassment is awful. We must stand by our coach, and believe we can come back from this stronger than ever. Do we want to go through multiple coaches and not build any continuity like our friends over at Montlake?
Fellow cougars need to realize one important thing, we are not a big time program. We are not a Ohio State or a Michigan, and we may never be. Some cougar fans have the notion in their head, that we win or else. I know it’s probably a minority but it seems to be growing. I remember sitting in the stands in 2007 watching the Cougars play UCLA. I hear people chanting fire Doba! We were a descent team back then we were a couple plays away from going to a bowl game. Even then fans were not happy, now it’s even worse. Alex Brink set numerous records for the Cougs, but never got over the hump to go to a bowl game. The fans never really embarrassed him, which is a travesty!
Cougar fans are a breed apart they are exceptional loyal, united, and just amazing. We are different than any fan base, we love our Cougs even when they are awful. I remember my dad getting everyone pilled in the car going down to Pullman for game day. I remember sitting in the back with my sister and staring at the night sky over the fields of wheat on our way back to Spokane. Those are some the most fondest memories I ever had. Being a cougar isn’t ultimately about the victories it about comradely, passion, and embracing the underdog. That is why I love being a Cougar, that’s what separates us from Husky fans. Husky fans have a “what have you done for me lately?” mentality, which is wrong. I’m starting to see that in some Cougars and it is really disturbing. Don’t become what you hate Cougar Nation!
