WSU Vs. Arizona State: Postgame Celebration Thread

494 Yards for Connor Halliday. Huge throw after huge throw. Gigantic catches all over the place by Marquess Wilson, Jared Karstetter and Isiah Barton.

If you read my preview, you know I had next to no faith that this would happen. However, we knew that Halliday was a bit of a wild card. Wow....was he ever.

ASU was poised to put this game away midway through the fourth quarter. But a huge fourth down stuff by Brandon Rankin gave the team a new energy. A third down catch and run by Rickey Galvin got WSU out of trouble. A third-and-fourteen TD pass to Isiah Barton gave the Cougs the lead.

The defense held in the red zone again on the ensuing ASU possession, leading to a missed chip shot field goal. The offense was able to drive 80 yards for the game clinching TD after two, you guessed it, MASSIVE third down catches by our beloved MQW.

As Mark said, MQW is now the single-season receiving yardage record holder for WSU. What a day for him. 222 yards and three scores. His best day as a Coug.

And most certainly, this coaching staff's most impressive win. 37-27. Whodathunkit?

GO COUGS!

Just one thing about it, Coach Wulff.....

Fix up the special teams so we do not get that first touchdown upset. It nearly killed half the alumni…. That is alll.

The power flickered and I missed about 3 minutes at the end.

Then the living room receiver/dvr was taking forever to catch up, and the internet was out…. so I wasn’t able to stay in the game thread. A couple of gems from watching the ending with my wife, though….

GAWD, Wilson gives me a chub. And that QB, what’s his name? Yah, Halliday. He gives me a double chub.

I was thinking about that

My three keys in CSW?

1. Stay out of passing downs. We were in plenty.
2. Limit Jamal Miles and Cameron Marshall. Miles had a return TD.
3. Get some good fortune. Only one TO for ASU, and that was when the game was basically decided.

Why do people even listen to us? We clearly don’t know shit.

That is what makes this win even more impressive.

I thought for sure we would need a couple timely TO’s to win. Sure ASU had a few drops but other than that Lady Luck didn’t really play a part in this game. Just a solid effort on both sides and a transcendent game from MQW. Oh yeah and that Halliday kid was OK.

I don't remember these plays

but ESPN has CJ Mizell with a 2 yard carry and “Hornton” with a 40 yard punt. Versatility.

by Mark Sandritter on Nov 13, 2011 12:13 AM PST up reply actions

That's especially impressive...

given that Mizell was in street clothes. He was firing up the defense on the sidelines all night though.

Ledge played great

attacked with reckless abandon and stayed home in the middle to deny the big play up the gut. He also was set and ready for the quick snap on the 4th down- as was Rankin.

by hollyweirdcoug on Nov 13, 2011 3:55 PM PST up reply actions

Perception is a funny thing.

playing ok seems otherworldly by comparison. For as long as I can remember, I’ve had the opinion that Ledgerwood was the worst LB on the roster. I agree with your assessment that “great” is probably overselling it, but screw it, I love everyone. The guy selling nachos was great last night.

by Kyle Rancourt on Nov 13, 2011 8:28 PM PST up reply actions

Defense played with heart

I was very critical of the defensive effort after the OSU loss, and others pointed out that it was probably just bad play, but solid effort. Point taken. But tonight, they gave up big several big passing plays, but their effort was lights out. I’m aware that effort doesn’t always match the results. They were aggressive in the trenches and playing with energy. I got a great look at Ball’s intensity and how the defense was eager to be on the field; I was in the front row of the student section tonight. They wanted this badly, and stepped up when needed against a solid ASU offense that seemed (disappointingly) unaffected by the elements for the most part. I tip my hat to Ball and Co. tonight.

by 2000 Alum on Nov 13, 2011 12:14 AM PST reply actions

Not so sure I agree about the weather not being a factor

ASU has run the ball pretty well. They looked to me like they didn’t really want to hit.

by Jeff Nusser on Nov 13, 2011 8:12 AM PST up reply actions

Halladay

At least tonight, he was just elusive enough, and he really gave his receivers a chance to catch some beautiful passes. He missed a few, sure, but he seemed to get better as the game went on. I’m impressed.

by 2000 Alum on Nov 13, 2011 12:17 AM PST reply actions

Really? He missed a few.

I think his completion percentage was 75% tonight. That is lights out. Aaron Rodgers…the NFL’s currently best QB is at 72.5, which is crazy.

Those are the ones I was thinking of

But for the most part the passes were perfectly placed. Oh yeah, and MQW played like a demigod. Turns out he’s kind of a big target. AND THE RECEIVERS TOTALLY HELPED HIM OUT! There weren’t the nauseating dropped passes to deal with.

Math is hard

It seemed like our defense played well in the first half and struggled in the second, but I was so caught up in the game I didn’t do the simple math to realize we only gave up 7 second half points.

Glad to see the second half be a bright spot. The definition of a bend but don’t break performance.
