WSU Vs. Utah: Open Football Game Thread

Utah Utes at Washington St. Cougars, Nov 19, 2011 2:00 PM PST

Here we are, at the first Senior Day in four years where more than just pride is on the line, and bad weather plus students wanting to spend an extra few hours at home (seriously folks, you are going to be itching to come back by Friday) will likely mean a very sparse crowd. Paul Wulff has spoken after each game in Martin this season how big of an impact the crowd made for the players. Hopefully, it doesn't really matter all that much to them.

Utah provides a great challenge, and their defense will be a big test for Connor Halliday's first career start.  Connor's a streaky guy, and how he starts may be indicative of how the game plays out.  If the receivers can even approach their level of success from last week, WSU will be in good shape.

It's fun to have meaningful football this late in the season. Let's hope the Cougs can step it up and make it a happy Saturday and give a great send-off to Alex Hoffman-Ellis, Jared Karstetter, Marshall Lobbestael, and all the other seniors.

If you aren't one of the select few that will be at the game today, come discuss it with us!

Simmons, Spitz out

Wilson, Bucannon are dressed and going through warmups. Both seem fine.

K, that's what I thought.

Not exactly the defense you want to be facing with a new starter out there.

The announcer of the Beavs-Dawgs game

said that Nick Montana, the Wyoming QB, and Halliday are the only three starting freshman at QB in the nation. Hard to believe, but I can’t seem to find anything that says elsewise..anyone?

I know Utah State had a freshman starter

Iowa State had a redshirt freshman last night against OK State.

Braxton Miller is a true freshman starter at Ohio State

Sean Mannion is a RS freshman playing in the same game…clearly that guy has his facts wrong somewhere.

With the game on the line. We have a chance, just not a great one.

I really don't need to hear the Utah guy

sucking off their defense when this was some combination of refs and freshman qb that cost us.

Damn

Great fight from the team today.

by 51dimes on Nov 19, 2011 5:41 PM PST reply actions

sucks big.

Too many mistakes…too many missed opportunities.

I hate this day now.

I like how we fought hard all the way though.

The feeling I have in my brain

is that I don’t throw that flag unless Halliday is a lot closer to being sacked than he was. Just a really devastating call to make

by Dids on Nov 19, 2011 5:42 PM PST reply actions

Yeah, but it was the correct call.

They dialed up 2 blitzes and we couldn’t pick them up.

OT in football, in both leagues, is a joke.

Yet every time it occurs I seem to follow it.

Thank goodness college basketball is here.

Everything you know is wrong.

by Valiance on Nov 19, 2011 5:43 PM PST reply actions

I have always believed college OT was fine except for the 25 yard line

Put the ball on the 35 or the 40 and it’s a whole different deal.

So ends the Wulff era

An ugly game with officiating nightmares… just could not get it done. The story of his WSU tenure. Luv u coach. Sorry to see you go.

wrong- Cougs beat uw- Wulff stays

Don't have to

You did.

That would definitely make the decision tougher, but I am reading the tea leaves and the under currents about needing a 6-win season to stay.

Well, USC/Oregon

just had an unquestionably worse grounding call.

Hope so...

The only team in the Pac-12 I hate more than USC is UW…but it isn’t even very close.

Down 14-0 now..

This one smells like an upset to me.

This is a weird feeling in a loss

I feel like its been a really long time since we actually gave away the game to the other team rather than being completely outclassed or blown out.

by sdcoug09 on Nov 19, 2011 5:52 PM PST reply actions

Third time this season

SDSU and UCLA are both games that easily could have been wins.

Not sure yet if that’s a positive or negative for the coaching staff.

Some impressions and "what if's?"

Utah is hot right now, and we played ‘em tough. WSU is much improved, and has potential to be better. If we roll over against the Dawgs next week, Wulff probably needs to go. But with a healthy Tuel next year, giving Halliday another year to season, I like the offense’s future…especially if MQW stays all four years. The D needs to grow up and wrap up, but they’re not far from competitive. Sheesh, they’re competitive now. I do believe Halliday could be great. The last drive was all him, and he made some poor choices in OT, which was sad. Anyway, here’s to the future and to being a lifelong Coug. I’ll always love this team, even when they suck.

by 2000 Alum on Nov 19, 2011 5:52 PM PST reply actions

So was this a positive or negative loss in terms of Wulff's future?

Losing is always negative for me…but how will Moos see it? How do others see it?

by westsidecougar1 on Nov 19, 2011 5:57 PM PST up reply actions

This was a positive loss, I think.

I’m not trying to whitewash poop, but I do think this game showed grit. They were INCHES away from a “W” in regulation. Too bad the OSU and UCLA games are serious strikes against Wulff.

Anybody else feel like it's remarkable to think

That we just now lost bowl eligibility?

Yeah, it's all I've been thinking about.

But it is nice that we made it to November. :)

I just told a friend

I’m gonna be pissed when we beat the dawgs.

’cause losing this game will have cost us El Paso. I want to go to that S*** hole for the holidays. Or whatever crappy bowl we could have gone to.

At this point any time you post, and it’s NOT a picture of black pants, I get confused. - Kyle Rancourt
