Cougs Eliminated From Bowl Contention: Lose to Utah in OT, 30-27

The incredible comeback win that almost was. After a huge catch from Jared Karstetter got the Cougs down inside the ten with 23 seconds left, Connor Halliday found Marquess Wilson at the goal line. Wilson was literally an inch away from punching it in for the winning TD.

Instead, WSU was left to scramble and spike the ball with three seconds left. Paul Wulff was left with a decision to kick the ball or go for the winning score with the final play. He opted for the former and the game was sent into overtime,

The game ended quickly after an "illegal forward pass" penalty on Halliday put the Cougs back in an impossible position. He threw an interception on the next play, and all Utah had to do was make the field goal to win. They did.

This team showed a lot of fight. Down ten points with just over five minutes left in the game, they staged two huge drives to send it into overtime. Halliday showed why he can be great with a few clutch throws, and reminded us that he is a redshirt freshman with four interceptions on the day.

There will be a number of "what-if" moments from this game. Utah scored their first touchdown on a fake punt pass. Their second touchdown was set up by a fumbled punt return. Down three points after scoring on a brilliant wide recever pass from Kristoff Williams to Bobby Ratliff, Chester Sua missed the tackle on John White IV and he spun off to go the distance. The Cougs looked like they may be done at that point.

They weren't, and drove down the field in a hurry to pull back within three after Halliday hooked up with Karstetter in the back of the endzone. The defense was able to stop Utah to set up the wild final drive of regulation.

Sadness in Cougar nation right now. They were so close to getting that fifth win to set up the most meaningful Apple Cup in a long time. Instead, they are left again to try and play the role of spoiler against the Huskies

I still can't believe how close MQW was to scoring that TD. This one will take a long, long time to get over.

Wilson was literally a foot in the endzone when he caught the ball.

Add in two lost points (thanks to another blown call on a safety) and the five turnovers, and you have a recipe for a loss

it was not a safety

we knocked him back into the endzone.

Wilson? Don’t know he was coming back for the ball. If the team just lines up we have another shot at the end zone before attempting the FG.

The refs might suck (I use the term might loosely) but we need to play the game.

It wasn't a safety from my eyes or the replay on the jumbotron...

It’s on forward motion, he was on the one yard line and was knocked back into the end zone.

However…. the end of the game… I just don’t….

if the ball is fully out of the endzone

and the D knocked you back into the endzone you are down where the ball was at the time of the contact.

Going into the endzone you only need to cross the line. Getting out of the endzone the entire ball has to be out (football acts like soccer in this case)

There in lies the problem with replay.

They wont review it cuz they’d stop the clock.

This is why the refs should be taught

if it’s close call it a TD, if it isn’t a TD the replay will prove it.

by cdalto on Nov 19, 2011 8:54 PM PST up reply actions

That walks a pretty slippery slope

Since you have to have conclusive evidence to the contrary to overturn.

by Brian Floyd on Nov 19, 2011 9:07 PM PST up reply actions

And if we're on the other end

Where it’s called and overturned but the clock stopped and the O sets up a play without having/using a TO we would be livid.

Bottom line, if he was in the ref needs to get it right.

by 02Coug on Nov 19, 2011 9:11 PM PST up reply actions

And he was in.

Which is why it sucks so bad.

by cdalto on Nov 19, 2011 9:12 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think the ball ever crossed the goal line, though.

He was in the endzone, came back to the ball, and caught it with one foot in the endzone, but the ball at the 1 yard line. I’m not sure, but I think the rule is the ball has to cross the plane

by Kyle Rancourt on Nov 20, 2011 1:11 PM PST up reply actions

I was at the game, had a perfect view in person I'm sure it was a TD.

But after watching the game later on TV I can see why so many people aren’t sure about it. Even if it would have been reviewed I don’t know how they could have overturned it with those angles.

by cdalto on Nov 20, 2011 8:30 PM PST up reply actions

I should add that it was a really weird play.

His momentum was taking him out of the endzone and the Utah defender was between MQW and the Ref. The only reason I could see the ball was because I was just high enough up in the stands to see over the top of the defender. Right when he caught the ball and his foot hit, the whole ball was across the goal line.

I guess I would just rather have them lean that way.

Same with all the catch/no catch stuff. To me, it’s always a catch unless it obviously isn’t, and it’s always a TD unless it obviously isn’t.

by cdalto on Nov 19, 2011 9:15 PM PST up reply actions

true

but they are taught to do it on ‘fumbles’. Let the play go unless you are positive the guy is down. The replay booth will take care of it. (according to them anyway)

not saying they should call a TD when in doubt. But clearly they need to get this crap right or get rid of it. The replay booth has castrated the refs, not that they had any balls to begin with.

If we called a TO I’ll bet the refs would have reviewed it.

I just don’t see the refs stopping the clock when we aren’t anywhere near lined up for a play which would give us a chance at a play into the end zone. The refs get in the way of the game all the time, but not to stop the clock that might have run out.

Happened right in front of me as well.

When his foot hit the ground the entire ball was still in the endzone. It was easy to see as I had a perfect view. Oddly enough it was essentially the same view as the referee and he managed to blow the call.

by cdalto on Nov 19, 2011 7:12 PM PST up reply actions

I still disagree that it was unquestionably a TD

I don’t think it was a TD. Could it have been a TD? sure. But to say anything is unquestionable at this point is silly. It was snowy, the field conditions sucked, and no one can know for sure. Even if they review it, there’s probably not enough evidence to overturn.

It's weird..

usually these loses really hurt and especially one that cost us a bowl. Right now, I’d be pinning away about the what if’s, but I’m not. I thought the game was entertaining like the last game and right now, I just want these guys to release all of their frustrations on UW and blow them out. This team is so close to being good.

by james_WSU on Nov 19, 2011 6:12 PM PST reply actions

Kind of wonder if Karstetter could have scored

but no matter. This team has a lot of fight, and after the losses have piled up, it would have been easy for this team to quit when down 10 late. But there was no quit in this team, and honestly I can’t think of many games during Wulff’s tenure where the team quit in a game (there have been some, but not that many).

I still feel the future is bright, whether its led by Wulff or someone else.

by 51dimes on Nov 19, 2011 6:14 PM PST reply actions   1 recs

I get what you're saying

and I’m not trying to be a dick, but should we really credit them for “not quitting”? Isn’t that something they’re supposed to not do? And at the end of year four with a coach, we’re pointing out that they didn’t quit as why we think this team has a bright future?

I just don’t agree with this line of reasoning.

Well- the 'storyline' and 'bloglines' for the games

against the Beavs and Cal were pretty much that the team had quit. Or failed to show up or whatever, the whole how can they not get up when it is a winnable gme theme was prevalent right? I don’t think it is unreasonable to point out the dramatic comebacks and the lack of quit in two games wherein a team accused of being quitters, actually did not and showed a resilience that struck us fans and the commentators as uncommon.

The reasoning is more that at the end of the fourth year, a team had bowl aspirations until the last game that played the season w/o it’s star offensive player and leader at the crucial slot of QB- and with devastating injuries to the OL to boot. Third string center, third string RT and what 1 sack vs. a pretty sack oriented D? Not excusing losing… but stepping out and looking at how close they are w/o thier QB warrants consideration.

If you can't Go Cougs... don't go.

by hollyweirdcoug on Nov 20, 2011 4:14 PM PST up reply actions

Eh

I failing to show up and quitting on your coach aren’t the same thing or mutually exclusive. Coming out unprepared or lacking energy is one thing; quitting on your coach is another. I don’t think they’ve ever quit on Wulff. But there’s really no way for any of us to know their mindset.

by Kyle Rancourt on Nov 20, 2011 8:23 PM PST up reply actions

Ultimately, it doesn't matter anyways.

At some point, that fight has to translate to wins. Dropping “gimmes” and “noways” we’re 2-5 in “winnable” games (SDSU, CU, UCLA, OSu, Cal, ASU, Utah). After next week we’ll be 2-6 or 3-5. Is that good enough to “earn” an extension, or even another year? I honestly don’t know.

This I do know: At some point the coach has to show he can get the team to win. For me, that was supposed to be this year.

#CougHarmonyOnTwitter #teamnopants

by TiltingRight on Nov 20, 2011 9:37 PM PST up reply actions

No I agree

I just don’t think losing winnable games means they’ve given up on the coach. I also don’t think just because they came back in this game that that means they “didn’t give up” on the coach. I think all the talk of giving up or not is silly, because it’s almost impossible for us to say for sure one way or the other.

Mainly though, I don’t think saying things like “Well shucks, at least they didn’t give up” in year four of a rebuild is good enough.

I have no idea how to take this loss

If the call on the MQW catch at the end goes our way that is the kind of break that literally turns a program around. It doesn’t, and we are here. If Sua wraps up, or if the punt isn’t fumbled, or many other things then maybe we don’t get to that point.

And in OT I would have loved to start out simple and just let Galvin run it first play. Little risk, maybe not a lot of reward but let Connor get his bearings. His adrenaline had to be over the top, and our first two plays were low risk and still blew up in our face.

A game that wasn’t just a game we could have won, but was a game that was daring us to win it. Instead we are left with another Apple Cup that is just for pride, and I don’t know what to think anymore. I thought the team was dead after the Cal game, and the only thing I know is that I was wrong about that.

by 02Coug on Nov 19, 2011 7:21 PM PST reply actions

I can't be mad at the OT play-calling

The first play was a simple wheel to Galvin that was so incredibly open. Galvin didn’t have anyone near him, but the right side of the line just whiffed on its blocks. The second play was kind of conservative — a screen. Problem was someone got them lined up wrong.

by Brian Floyd on Nov 19, 2011 7:36 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not really mad about OT

Because I agree, Galvin was open and really both calls were meant to be conservative. There is just a part of me thinking “we had run the ball OK, what if we had started with a draw or other run.”

I think at the end it was the risk of having a RS freshman QB in OT, and an offensive line that still isn’t entirely there.

by 02Coug on Nov 19, 2011 7:44 PM PST up reply actions

Mad at one thing

our grounds people cleared the snow to the wrong side of the goal line chalk. You don’t have to go into the endzone, just touch the chalk but the ref couldn’t see where the line was. It was all white on one side and he could see the seperation only in the endzone. Look at the picture again.

I was surprised

that Kars didn’t bee line for the goal line and let the big safety who was closing hit him out of bounds— it looked like a foot race to me. Felt like he should have tried. Even with the knocked out clock ticks you have a spike coming. Weird play— frustrating loss for sure…

Gotta love that fighting comeback however…

It was the smart play

Sure, he could have tried to blast down field, but the fact of the matter was that they had no timeouts and less than 20 seconds. It shows his maturity.

I feel like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. Ugh

not dis'n him

but it can be argued that for those very same reasons he should have blasted down the sideline to try a dive for the ‘cone’.

I was of the opinion he looked at

the clock after he went out and was pissed. I think he felt he could’ve gotten in maybe — just speculating, not complaining… if you want complaining… ask me about a freshman returner NOT fair catching….

I think if he went OB after the earlier catch

he might have tried for more on this one. He clearly made a mistake on the other catch.

Regarding the run OB—

“WSU put itself in position to win when it stopped John White IV short on third down. The Cougars then used their final timeout and regained possession with 52 seconds remaining and trailing 27-24. A 24-yard completion from redshirt freshman quarterback Connor Halliday to senior wide receiver Jared Karstetter gave WSU possession at its own 49. But on the ensuing play, Karstetter beat Mo Lee down the right sideline and it appeared he might run into the end zone for the game-winning score.

Instead, he stepped out of bounds at the 7-yard line.

"That one is going to haunt me," Karstetter said. "I feel like I could’ve scored."

He didn't say that to us.

His quote was “I don’t know. In my head, you think that you reach up for the ball and stay inbounds. But I’ll have to see it on film.”

Maybe pulled it from the radio.

He was emotional after the game, but he didn’t give the impression that he was sure he could’ve scored. And most of us didn’t think he could have

yeah I am not sure of it by any means...

but he ran out of bounds untouched and had the sideline… even just going until he was knocked out puts him several yards closer…

There are many things in this game that we can wonder "what if"

But I am with you on the JK catch down the sideline. I thought after the catch he would just run to the endzone or dive for the pylon. Maybe JK felt it was to slippery to try and adjust and run straight and he just want to make sure the catch was secured. Then I thought to myself he probably wasn’t sure where he was in regards to the sideline, how much time was left and maybe he wanted to assure us of a game tying FG. I hit my 20 second rewind button about 5 times to see how much room he had. I think sometimes in a 2 minute drill it is instinctive to catch the ball and get out of bounds. I figure when a WR makes a catch for a 1st down they know the clock is going to stop, so why not fight for extra yards. I guess I just pictured him catching it and tip-toeing the sideline for the touchdown (or diving for the pylon). Strange play.

did you see Butch walk up and hand Karstetter a cardboard sign?

Not saying Karstetter didn't say it.

He just had a different tone talking to reporters. Probably said it on the radio with Bud or something.

by hollyweirdcoug on Nov 19, 2011 9:26 PM PST up reply actions

It's a play they run all the time, too.

That’s one where you notice the loss of Barton. Bontempts was just a decoy meant to hold the safety. Instead, he brought the safety right to Wilson.

by Brian Floyd on Nov 19, 2011 9:53 PM PST up reply actions

Bingo.

Should have ran a post (or possibly seam or dig) to pull the safety, instead he ran a corner and brought the safety right to the ball.

by cdalto on Nov 19, 2011 10:00 PM PST up reply actions

Yep.

It was a go on the outside (Wilson) and a post on the inside. Wilson had his man toasted.

by Brian Floyd on Nov 19, 2011 10:21 PM PST up reply actions

Losing Barton

really hurt. It took a few drives for our offense to figure out what to do without him. Bontempts, Simone drops, etc. I thought Ratliff would take Barton’s role or even K. Williams.

I love it when CougCenter goes green, because it usually means we are winning.

by SoCalCoug on Nov 19, 2011 11:18 PM PST up reply actions

Ya that was frustrating

I felt the ball was a little under thrown. If he throws it a yard or two farther (even three yards) Wilson runs into the endzone. Wilson was ahead of Bontemps by a few strides.

by SoCalCoug on Nov 19, 2011 11:58 PM PST up reply actions

I still can't believe we lost this game like we did.

I also thought that for the most part the team played well and put everything on the line.

Fair enough.

I heard it on the radio while driving home, didn’t catch it on the feed.

by Kyle Rancourt on Nov 20, 2011 8:25 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, it was right in front of me

For a guy who fair caught pretty much every punt this year, I couldn’t believe he was trying to return it. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

by Jeff Nusser on Nov 20, 2011 9:54 PM PST up reply actions

This brings up a larger problem:

why the hell was Leon Brooks returning punts at all? He has been terrible all year. We can’t throw anyone else out there? Like, literally anyone else.

(Also, this is me saying he’s awful without looking at his numbers. I invite people to throw his not-that-bad numbers in my face and say, YOUS WRONG DUDE)

by Kyle Rancourt on Nov 21, 2011 12:08 AM PST up reply actions

That's why he's out there. To catch it.

If they were trying to get big returns, they’d do better with Galvin. But mostly they just want it caught.

I know he played QB in HS

but he looked so comfortable running that play.

by SoCalCoug on Nov 19, 2011 11:43 PM PST up reply actions

I got so wrapped up

in the last drive I thought we would be going for the TD and when Furney came out, I was like “what the heck?! We are going for a FG? Huh?” Then when my emotions calmed down and looked at the situation and the clock and I was like “right call coach, good move.” “Of course that is what you do.” But my heart was telling me, “go for it, go for it.” I felt like their defense was rattled and we had them on their heels. I thought we would score easily. I wanted that knock out punch thrown.
Those 5 turnovers really hurt. I don’t think a lot of teams win with 5 turnovers.

By the way Coerper has been playing really good.

He is a better DE than I thought. I wish he had been more healthy this year. How many games has he missed?

I couldn't imagine being Wulff tonight.

He has to be lying in bed replaying all the “what if” scenarios. No sleep for him tonight. Or he is downing some Orange Crush, so he can go to sleep. Orange Crush (with grandpa’s cough syrup) = Melatonin

Dear CougCenter

I’ve tried to rec a few posts tonight and it always comes up as a flag. I’m not even buzzed, and I’m using Google Chrome – is there an issue with this browser?
Anyway, disregard any flags that may be attributed to me. Sorry.

It just looks like "Flag"

When you hit “Rec”, the “Rec” button disappears, so you’re just left with the “Flag” button followed by the number of rec’s. It’s confusing. but you’re probably fine.

unless you fill out the comment box and hit submit, it doesn’t actually flag the comment. I thought I flagged multiple comments on accident before I figured that out
