The Cougs are on their way to a doubleheader sweep of BYU as I write this, but here are some thoughts from baseball coach Donnie Marbut as WSU heads into a huge Pac-10 series against Washington.

WSU pitching staff...
Has thrown 26 consecutive shutout innings as I write this. The longest streak in at least 15 year.

So fitting, story of this season.
Shewey just couldn’t get a break there in the 9th. Impressive coming back with three consecutive Ks though to get out of it.

Interesting comments about playing for WSU, not the individuals...
…makes it sound like we have some selfish playing out there? Maybe reading too much into it.
Considering that baseball's basically a selfish sport
I never really understand why baseball coach harp on this stuff. I’ll defer to Marbut, but I’m just not sure how not playing for he name on the front has led to terrible defense and lack of power.

very interesting comments
I’ve followed the team pretty closely this year. I like Marbut’s no-nonsense approach; it certainly seems like he’s implying there has been some selfish play. Watching this team squander scoring opportunities and leave runners on bases is painful. Yesterday we had the bases loaded with no outs and get one run to show for it. Our batter hits into a double play to the pitcher to catcher to first. Unbelievable.
—There have been a number of bonehead plays, dropped fly balls, base-running errors, multiple fielding errors, and there are about 4 of our batters who are absolute rally-killers every time they come up. I’ve also seen a real lack of patience at the plate; our guys going after really bad pitches. To me, this all suggests some players just not in the game mentally. I like it that Marbut puts this on the players; I hate it when coaches continually blame themselves instead of saying that it’s up to the players to make plays.
Funny
“I like it that Marbut puts this on the players; I hate it when coaches continually blame themselves instead of saying that it’s up to the players to make plays.”
That’s the exact same thing Paul Wulff has been crucified for.
I feel like this is a different situation.
It’s beside the point, but I think if this continued on a much larger scale for 3 years that Marbut would be crucified for the same thing. It’s up to the players to make plays, but it’s also up to the coaches to get players who make plays if you understand what I’m saying.

I do get that.
I understand there’s an equity with Marbut at this point. I just found the differing perspectives interesting — Wulff was flamed in his first year for suggesting the talent wasn’t up to par and the players weren’t executing.
Which is a little ridiculous.
But when a guy takes a team to regionals two years in a row (?), he has a little leeway I think.

I take your point. Somehow it seems different with Wulff, because in three years I have never heard him take any responsibility for our pitiful record. He has blamed Doba, blamed the players, and continually talked about how awful the situation was when he got here. Maybe so. Personally, I don’t buy it. We had talent left over from the 2007 team. I think the job of a new coach is to take the players he has, win their allegiance, and coach them as best he can. Wulff somehow managed to alienate the juniors and seniors on the team, and I think some of his assistants were not D1 coaches. Just my two cents. . My view is that the head coach and other coaches are responsible for having a system in which the players can succeed, whether its football or basketball. . That also means good halftime adjustments, good clock management, and a sound game plan which attacks the opponents weaknesses, and hopefully recruit well. . The players have to make plays. The fans are responsible for showing up, supporting the team, and hopefully behave in a sportsmanlike manner. Everybody has a role.
Division 1 level players.
You reiterated the point.
The players have to make plays.
