HOT COUGAR ACTION: Two Days Left of Season Preview Links

With the season two days away, there really isn't much to link. Well, there is plenty to link, but nothing that we all haven't read 50 times this off-season. Season previews, depth chart talk, a prediction or two. Soon this will all be over.

PULLMAN – For three Washington State football players, the wait for Saturday’s 2011 season opener has been interminable.

In a lot of ways, Washington State, which built optimism over the final three games of last season and in preseason camp, could not have picked a better opponent to open the 2011 season.

PULLMAN – It took a while, but it may have finally become apparent why WSU has been outmatched the last few years: They’ve been playing 10-on-11. The tight end has been a missing figure in the WSU offense, but Andrei Lintz says that’s about to change.

Cougs Could Be This Year’s Surprise Team | Super Tao Inc.
One team that I feel has been overlooked as a potential turnaround team in the upcoming college football season is the team that calls Pullman, Washington home: The Washington State Cougars. Paul Wulff took over a moribund program when he arrived as the new head football coach at his alma-mater in 2008. The fact that he has just five wins under his belt in his first three seasons at WSU is of great concern to the fans of the program.

Former D-lineman Dan Spitz is the backup LT. ... Adam Coerper won the job at DE opposite Travis Long. His backup is former TE Skyler Stormo. ... C.J. Mizell beat out Mike Ledgerwood at MLB. ... LB Chester Su'a and CB Spencer Waseem are the only two true freshmen on the two-deep. ... There's an "Or" between Daniel Simmons and Nolan Washington at left CB.

2011 Washington State Football Predictions, Picks & Odds
Upcoming 2011 Washington State football predictions for the new season aren’t looking to bright. Most of the conference is buzzing, with the PAC-10 now being the PAC-12. It has meant the inclusion of two new teams, the separating of the conference into two divisions, and a brand new conference championship game. That’s all great, but Washington State is the team at the bottom of it all, and 2011 college football predictions aren’t too favorable for this squad.

One more move and Big 12 is over
Should Oklahoma act upon its earnest desires and seek an invitation to join the Pacific-12 Conference — something I'm fully expecting to happen within days, if not hours — that decision could well be the killing blow to the Big 12 while also providing Texas the political cover to follow suit and ask for admission as well.

Texas and the PAC-12

Reading “One more move and Big 12 is over” gives me the feeling this person does not know what losses Texas will make if they go into the PAC-12. The share of profit could give less to Texas, and PAC-12 will not bend over to allow Texas its own TV rights. With that in mind, if the Big 12 (no credibility, they are not 12 at all) ends due to Oklahoma jumping ship, Texas Longhorn may keep its TV program and go independent.

We will see if UT wants to risk going Indy.

They don’t have the same national following as Notre Dame and BYU. BYU isn’t huge but it is national. I have said this before, but how many of you know people that are die hard Texas followers outside of Texas (besides Matthew McConahaughey and Owen Wilson)? I know plenty of Notre Domers and a few BYU fans. Who really cares about the Longhorns outside of Texas? Does anyone know if the Longhorn network (with ESPN) is contingent on them being in a conference? What will UT do with their other sports? Will ESPN want to broadcast a school that is playing a bunch of patsies and no longer has annual, traditional, rivalry games with OU and Texas A&M? Texas will have to find another league for their other sports. If they want good competition for all their sports they will take the financial hit, eat crow and join the Pac12. OU and OSU will be calling Larry Scott soon and after that Texas will be coming over with their tale between their legs.

The question of how much of a financial hit it would be remains though.

Check out the article from Jon Wilner about a week ago. Here’s a quick summary: UT is set to make about $30 million from TLN and the Big 12’s media deal. The current Pac 12 makes about $21 million a year, and that isn’t counting the eventual revenue of the Pac-12 Network when it gets up and running. Now going back to the article the Mark linked, if UT waits for OU to make the first move, basically guaranteeing that the Pac-16 is going to make some big bucks, then it could be the perfect move for Texas. According to Wilner, if OU, OSU, TT, And UT were to join, we would be looking at upwards of $30 million per school.

Short version: if everything were to fall into place perfectly, then it would quite possibly be financially beneficial for Texas to join the Pac-16 versus going independent.

Good points

Ya, UT’s 30 mill is with the TLN and Big12 and no one knows what it going to happen to those numbers once Texas A&M leaves. The reason being that when A&M leaves it probably voids those TV deals and ESPN won’t want to pay that kind of money anymore. At least the Big12 TV deal. This will be interesting.

Exactly,

They make $30 mil with their current Little12 deal and the TLN. When the conference dissolves, there’s no reason to expect to make that $30 mil without a major TV partner stepping in to carry all of their games (or most, anyway). The Pac12 TV deal pays $24-25 per year BEFORE the P12 network, and WITHOUT TX households.

I’m guessing a new TV contract with TX and OK households would cross the $30 mil threshold, or get close enough to it that they’d jump.
