HOT COUGAR ACTION: Pac-12 Expansion Fun Facts

Typically, around this time of the week I've been finding obscure facts of WSU's next opponent and turning them into a post. WSU has no opponent this week, so with expansion talk all the rage, you all get expansion fun facts!

  • The Google search "Pac-12 Expansion" yields 144,000 results.
  • The Google search "Larry Scott is a god" yields 9 results.
  • The Google search "Dan Beebe is an idiot" yields 526 results.
  • Pac-12 expansion guru John Wilner has tweeted expansion 28 times in 2011
  • Oregon State reserve cornerback Larry Scott has been tagged in hundreds of stories on SB Nation, all of which are about Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott.
  • On CougCenter, there have been 91 stories, 11 fan posts and 21 fan shots containing the word expansion.
  • In 2012, this quote will still be true, "Washington State is getting more from its conference than the University of Texas."

WSU back on the practice field - SportsLink - Spokesman.com - Sept. 20, 2011
COUGARS Washington State returned to the practice field Tuesday for bye week work, and there were a few less Cougars than expected. We cover the practice and coach Paul Wulff's press conference, so read on.

Pac-12 turning into conference for great running backs - Spokesman.com - Sept. 20, 2011
PULLMAN – The conference of quarterbacks is in danger of morphing into the league of extraordinary running backs. But there is a good reason for it.

Wulff says Cougars must learn to finish - seattlepi.com
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Coach Paul Wulff said his team must learn to finish games after squandering a 10-point lead in a 42-24 loss at San Diego State. The Cougars were outscored by three touchdowns in the final quarter, and turned the ball over three times in the final eight minutes Saturday.

Scout.com: WALDEN UNPLUGGED: The hell with Texas
JIM WALDEN HAS never been shy about expressing his opinions. So we had high hopes he could offer compelling words on what seems to be the inevitable expansion of the Pac-12, with two possible additions in the form of national powerhouses Texas and Oklahoma. The former Cougar coach and current WSU color man did not mince words.

WSU News Center - Working with team elevates coordinator's love of baseball
PULLMAN, Wash. - While waiting for the cold rain to stop in Berkeley, Calif., in March, Lindsay Weber thought to herself, "The baseball team might have to stay an extra day." Weather is just one of the challenges and unknowns Weber encounters in her job as Washington State University baseball operations coordinator.

Expansion news

Pac-12 says no (mostly) to expansion - Pac-12 Blog - ESPN
And after all of the chatter about super-conferences and the Pac-Whatever, the Pac-12 has decided to... stay the Pac-12.

Everything Just Keeps Moving Along | Eugene Daily News

Now, Rueben Mayes did play very well inside Autzen Stadium.  In 1984, he ran for 357 yards, but did so playing for the Washington State Cougars.  Thus, not only did Mayes never wear an Oregon jersey, but given the geographical locations between Pullman and Eugene, there was no way that Gary Campbell could have ever coached him in the early 1980′s.

Pac-12 Conference: League announces it will NOT expand (updated) | College Hotline

9:10 p.m. update: Been on the phone for last 30 minutes. Here’s why league did not expand, in a nutshell: It determined that a 14-school conference was awkward and it would not bow to Texas’ revenue demands.

Pacific 12 Conference won't expand for now - latimes.com

After careful review we have determined that it is in the best interests of our member institutions, student-athletes and fans to remain a 12-team conference," Commissioner Larry Scott said in a statement.

complete the analisys

since cougcenter likes to take a heavily statistical slant in an attempt keep a level perspective… lets be fair:

“Larry Scott is an idiot” returns 83 results
“Dan Beebe is an idiot” returns 576 results

“Larry Scott is a god” returns 93 results
“Dan Beebe is a god” returns 0 results

If I was handy with a bar graph i’d make one, but I am not.

Congrats to cougcenter as this story alone gave Larry Scott a 1033% bump in “god” results! And threw another 9.5% on Beebe’s “idiot” pile to boot. Awesome.

Questions about Expansion

1. If people think that it’s inevitable that things are moving to four 16-team superconferences, wouldn’t we want to add four of the prime candidates now, rather than wait to pick up scraps (e.g., the Kansas schools) after the TX and OK schools land somewhere else? (Note: I realize that Scott and the Pac-12 presidents may just be taking their current stance as a negotiating ploy, and may still want to add Texas, OK, OKST, and TTU; my question assumes that the Pac-12 and its member institutions really don’t see much on the table with these other four schools, even if they could get Texas to agree to be close to, if not exactly, equal with everyone else.)

2. Why does everyone think it’s inevitable that we’ll have four superconferences (as opposed to, say, five BCS conferences with between 12-16 teams each)?

I don't understand #2 either

The Pac 12 already has the most of what really counts in all this conference discussion: eyeballs. That is the reason it has the richest league deal. We will be relevant no matter what, barring something unforseen like the entire system collapsing.

I was thinking that eventually

we would have to go to 16 and make sure we get good schools in for marketing purposes, because we don’t want to become less of a conference compared to the others. But the more I think about it the more I don’t think I want the headache (Texas). History repeats itself and it is a good learning tool. Texas has never played well with others, what makes us think that once they are in the Pac16 they will behave. They won’t. Leave them alone and let them do their own thing and hurt another conference, not ours.

They're saving face.

Had they been given an invite to the PAc 12 they would have accepted in a split second.

Maybe, maybe not

Doesn’t really matter now, expansion is not happening.

I just don't think you can argue with the money, especially at a school with as small of an athletic budget as WSU.

As long as you set up the conference in a way that keeps Texas from doing what it did to the SWC and what it is doing the the Big 12 9 (and equal revenue sharing goes a long way in that), I think it would be a very beneficial move.

I don't see your point.

Point being, don't invite outsiders to join

who only have their own self interests in mind.

And we are ignoring the obvious here, WSU will be at an even larger competitive disadvantage than we are already should the league expand to 16.
