HOT COUGAR ACTION: Video Wednesday
Yesterday was actually a somewhat busy news day in Pullman. Mike Leach reportedly filled out his coaching staff and Ken Bone held his weekly press conference. Video of Bone's press conference can be found below, there is also a video of Bill Moos touring the Martin Stadium remodel.
If you would prefer words rather than video, Cougars Quarterly held Q & A sessions with Mike Leach, Jazmine Perkins and April Coook. Nothing earth shattering from Leach, he talks about WSU, it's history and of course pirates.

8. Washington State: With 18 starters back, I'll go ahead and type it: New coach Mike Leach will lead the Cougars to a bowl game. And, hopefully, someone tips their cap to former coach Paul Wulff for collecting some solid talent, including two quarterbacks, Jeff Tuel and Connor Halliday, who appear capable of flinging the rock as Leach likes to, as well as a potential All-American receiver in Marquess Wilson.
Tuesdays with Ken Bone - SportsLink - Spokesman.com - Jan. 10, 2012
FROM PULLMAN — Ken Bone has concluded his weekly conference calls — one with the local media, the other with media around the conference — and we have a summary of both of them, plus some video, posted below. Read on.

Doesn't look like there is much to tour with the Stadium project
From what I have seen up close and in the video, it looks like it is still in the demolition stages, although there clearly was sone fresh poured concrete in the video.

Am I the only one that thinks we should rename the stadium when it's finished?
I am singing the quiet song...THE QUIET SONG... THE QUIET SONG!!!
If someone wants to pony up for naming rights I'm all for it.
But I wouldn’t rename it just for the sake of change.
I'm a glass half full kind of guy. My glass just happens to be half full of bourbon. And sitting next to several empty glasses.
Give it ten years...
…and you’ll want to name it Mike Leach stadium. That’s what we should have called our now huge, once filled, now empty stadium.

They are selling the naming rights
I cannot find the link right now, but there are several naming rights up for sale at this time.
Martin = 5M
Football Facility = 3M (IIRC)
You can name rooms such as the LB’s meeting room etc.
Somewhere on the interwebs is a list of all the things you can name (for a price). And they told me I could name one of the bathroomsin Martin (yes, I asked)

I think your numbers might be off
because Greg Rankich donated three million and just had the club rioom in the new stadium named after him. I am trying to find that website because I saw it too, but I’m not having any luck.
The blood of "The Five" cries for justice.
Yeah those numbers seem very low
Just as a reference UW is selling the rights to name its new field for $50M and football facility for $10M. A few years back Oklahoma State renamed its stadium after a $70M donation. I expect it to be much more then $5M to name our stadium.
Well
OK State didn’t rename their stadium only after the $70 million was donated. They would have done so for much, much less. That’s like saying if I donated 100 million to WSU that “WSU renamed Martin Stadium Kyle Rancourt Field after a 100 million dollar donation.”
by Kyle Rancourt on Jan 12, 2012 11:18 AM PST up reply actions
Also
UW (before the renovation) could hold 70,000+. OSU is at 60,000+. Martin Stadium is at 37,000. Not exactly apples-to-apples.

What does seating capacity have to do with the naming price tag?

Husky Stadium and Boone Pickens Stadium are much bigger.
Stands to reason a smaller stadium would cost less to rename.

...and more visible.
It costs more to advertise on a stadium in Seattle than Pullman, no matter the size.
Maybe
But certainly not to the degree which you are describing. Your first post was much more accurate IMO.

The degree which I am describing?
All I said was that Husky Stadium and Boone Pickens Stadium were much larger. They are. I never said they should charge 3x the amount or anything. I simply stated that it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison when saying “Well UW charges X and Oklahoma State charges Y” because those two programs are not WSU.
For the record, I remember seeing the naming rights at $5 million, too. I just can’t find it anywhere and I don’t care enough to keep looking. I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s a little higher now, but I don’t think it’s substantially larger.
by Kyle Rancourt on Jan 12, 2012 12:00 PM PST up reply actions
My guess
Is that the amount for naming rights has more to do with how much a person donates compared to the renovation costs that are trying to be made. So I guess that would put it around $5 from the previous renovation stage. We will probably hear about the opportunity again going into the next phase with a larger number to be dangled in front of donors.

My memory is fuzzy
But I remember the naming rights for the field to be about $5M. The stadium itself was not listed.

I agree it is not apple to apples
I wasn’t trying to imply that it was, just a reference. However the math on your stadium size verses cost of naming is not even close to the $5M it would be closer to $25M.
by WazzuCrew11 on Jan 12, 2012 12:03 PM PST up reply actions
What?
I never said it should cost any certain number. I simply said it should cost more for a larger stadium. What math was I doing? I don’t even know what we’re talking about anymore. I hate math.
by Kyle Rancourt on Jan 12, 2012 12:19 PM PST up reply actions
haha, so do I
I was just going on the premise that a larger stadium size would cost more then a smaller one (I guess i did the actual Math) but just looked at it as a one to one ratio where a 70K stadium is worth $50M then a $37K stadium would be worth a little less then $25M. I read your above comment and realized I was off on the point you were trying to make.

Scout is re-releasing their rankings later today.
They have a few new 5 stars, and they’ve evaluated a bunch of players that were NR before. I doubt it means anything for us, save a few NR guys becoming 2 star guys, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if someone like Dotson gets bumped up to 3 stars, or Jackson to 4 stars.
To be honest
At this point I really don’t want to see our guys adding any more stars. I think the fewer “accolades” a player has, the more humble and coachable he will be. Don’t get me wrong, I do want us to be recruiting the best prospects we can get, but for guys that are already here they don’t need any additional individual reinforcement.
The blood of "The Five" cries for justice.
The fan base would benefit from a rankings boost more than any of the players
Sad? Maybe. I know I’d be pretty excited to see some guys jump up. And they all know exactly what coaches have been after them and probably better where they stand.
by klokkins on Jan 11, 2012 11:29 AM PST via Android app up reply actions
Yeah I can't get behind this at all.
You think it’d be better for the players if they weren’t told their hard work has paid off, and a recruiting service thinks they’re better than their original evaluation? I disagree completely. I’m not sure any will get a ratings bump, so it’s probably a moot point, but if it were to happen, it’d be small. You wouldn’t see some NR guy all of a sudden ranked 4 stars.
by Kyle Rancourt on Jan 11, 2012 11:35 AM PST up reply actions
I don't want to make an overstatement
in implying that getting bumped a star is really a big deal. But I think where we probably differ is in our perception of the rating system. I think ratings are more reflective of talent than they are hard work. I am not saying that some of these recruits or all of these recruits for that matter have not worked hard. But I guarantee you, as seen in their highlight films, they are all pretty much good enough as is to dominate at the high school level based on ability alone. Obviously, that margin goes away as soon as they get to the college level. From what was quote by players and coaches, I think we saw a little bit of what I am talking about when Mizell arrived here as one of the few if not only freshmen 4 star recruit on campus we he got here.
In any case, I really don’t think it will matter much even if at all because of the way things will be done by Leach and his coaching staff. Plus, football is a great sport that can teach you humility after you get hit a time or two.
The blood of "The Five" cries for justice.
Yeah but every recruit is not CJ Mizell.
You think if someone like Jackson or Dotson gets bumped up one more star, they’ll suddenly become prima donnas?
by Kyle Rancourt on Jan 11, 2012 12:18 PM PST up reply actions
CJ Mizell would've been much better off if he wasn't handed the starting job.
Not that we had a big choice. It was pretty much him, Ledgerwood, and Markle. Mizell easily had the biggest upside and we were desperate. Thought Ledge made a huge jump this past year under Tormey.
I don't think he was just "handed" the starting job
Mizell made some big plays vs. Montana State, including the pick that saved the game for us. But, like you said, we needed to try to make something happen on defense because we were really sucking wind. Plus, I believe (if memory serves me well) that Ledgerwood was injured in the UCLA game which opened the door for Mizell to start regularly.
The blood of "The Five" cries for justice.
He certainly wasn't handed a starting job.
by Brian Floyd on Jan 11, 2012 12:36 PM PST up reply actions
You're right, that's oversimplifying it too much.
What I always read about Mizell was that he had a poor attitude, bad practice habits, was out of position on D a lot, but was ridiculously talented. Maybe he wasn’t handed the starting job, but on many accounts it seemed that way. Even Grippi laid into him once or twice, and Grippi could care less if a guy is good or not if he works hard and is a good teammate.
All of those things are true, re: Mizell
But that starting spot was the carrot on the end of the stick. There were a lot of things going on behind the scenes to try and help shape him — I wrote about Mizell a couple times, but it’s probably all moot at this point; he seemed like he turned it around before doing something bad.
Anyway, Mizell had to work hard to earn the starting spot and keep it after. And it worked. There was a noticeable difference in CJ throughout the year. I don’t know if he’ll stick, but I think what you saw at the end of the season was a product of frustration — he was more hurt (injured) than most realized.
I did state that it is not likely to matter much
and Mizell is probably his own special case in many ways. But I can relate from conversations that I have had with past players, that the star rankings and offers do matter to them. I do think that it is somewhat of a “badge,” but it doesn’t necessarily mean they will be primadonnas. I think, like in the case of Mizell, it kind of interacts with their personality. Some may let it get to their head and others will not.
The blood of "The Five" cries for justice.
Sorry about getting sidetracked with a mini-rant on Mizell.
I do think if a highly touted 4 or 5 star player just dropped in our laps he might have a problem walking in that must be nipped in the bud pretty fast by the upperclassmen and coaching staff.
The problem of course comes if there aren’t upperclassmen to put him in his place, so to speak, or a staff to back up those players. Maybe this happened with Mizell, at least partly? I don’t know. But, I understand the “big fish in a little pond” aspect you’re implying.
He didn't drop in our laps at all
There were major issues between him and the coaching staff at Florida State so he ended up not attending. Ball knew somethng about him or had some connection to him and got him up here.
The blood of "The Five" cries for justice.
I thought he didn't qualify at FSU? And Devard Darling was our connection.
We got him the following year. By “dropped in our lap” I mean it didn’t appear that we out recruited anyone else for him. More like offered him a chance that he may not have had anymore at FSU or other schools. Given that he was previously a big-time recruit who would’ve had a whole list of schools after him, that’s the definition of having a guy drop in your lap.
We are so far off the original post, so we may just have to agree to disagree about most things Mizell. I’m sure we can both agree that we hope to see him out there in the Fall, the guy is a monster!
I actually had a random conversation with him at a bus stop
in 2010 when we first got here. I was just asking hm a bunch of “fan” questions and i told him I was happy he was here. From what I remember he told me that Ball had called him up here. He also was talking about eligibility issues and the suggestions from the FSU staff that he go to a JC which he didn’t want to do. He said when the staff here found out he was eligible they made a call and he came. He is a pretty cool guy, but the moment I will never forget is when I was telling him about losing by 8 touchdowns in 2008, he looked at me and said, “What?” I was not under the impression that he knew that much about WSU before he got herre. I sure hope he finishes out here.
The blood of "The Five" cries for justice.
The talent evaluators
make an effort to see them in person, and they do rate them on things like “motor” (hustle on the field) and “size” (work in the weight room).
Honestly, I don’t much care anyway, because 1) any coaching staff that’s relying on Scout.com stars to determine who to recruit will not be successful; and 2) Beyond the top 5 or 6 players at any position each year, it’s all about projecting what a kid will look like in 2 or 3 years, rather than what they’re doing in HS. If the folks working for Scout or Rivals or 247 were REALLY able to do that well, they’d be working for colleges, not recruiting services.

aren't their star ratings a fluid ranking system?
5* is like the top 50, 4* is like 51-250, 3* is 251-500, and 2* is everyone else (or something like that)?
So if 10 guys get elevated from 4* to 5*, there are 10 that get downgraded or something like that.
by Blackie1829 on Jan 11, 2012 3:20 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
Yeah.
That’s why you see so many guys rated 3 and 2 stars. It’s easier to just leave them there once the better guys get evaluated. But a lot of the time, when a guy commits to a BCS school, he’s automatically given 2 stars regardless of whether they’ve looked at him or not. Chester Su’a was a 2 star RB/LB, then they re-did their rankings, watched tape of him, and bumped him to 4 stars. I think the new 5 star kids they got were originally 4 stars, so it’s not like they found two new guys out of the blue.

I’m curious to see if he will be back next year. He didn’t exactly end the season on good terms (pulling a Deon Burnett), and now the coach who seemed to bring him around, Tormey, is gone.
