OTFP: Vacations in 2012?

Every year, Mrs. Kyle and I try to go on vacation. Two years ago, we spent a week in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It was probably the best week of my life. If you've never been to Jamaica, go. This past year, we went to Disney World. While I had fun, not sure I'll be going back to Florida any time soon. This year, we're getting married. Our honeymoon will take place in Italy, and we've talked about going to the UNLV game, as well. My mom also wants us to come up to Alaska to visit her, my aunts, and my grandparents, but I think with a wedding, honeymoon, and possibly a drunken trip to Vegas to watch the Cougs to save for, that's probably asking too much.

Is anyone traveling anywhere this year? I know Michael the Coug is getting married and going to Vegas and Paris. Anyone else going on an annual vacation, or just a one time thing?

I think we're going to New Orleans next year.

Is it bad that I mainly want to visit Nawlins because of the food? I’m a fat kid at heart.

How about now?

Go through the French Quarter and do not miss the cafe du monde. Get some beignets (powdered doughnuts) and coffee from there. I think around the area there is a store that sell pralines and you can see through the window where they make it. At times. a band group plays in the streets.
Make sure you get alligator, crawfish, catfish, fried okra, shrimp po boy and king cake (for the season and parties).

For parades
Plan where you want to be for each parade. When you are there, You ask the man in the float “throw me something mister” or if a woman “throw me something mam”. Have a bag or backpack to lug all of your booty.

New Orleans!

That’s awesome you’re going. My wife and I will be there for Mardi Gras too. We’ll be there 2/19 – 2/22. We did Mardi Gras a few years back and I also went to New Orleans last June. I’d figure out which parades you want to go to and plan your time there around that. One thing that has annoyed me is that there are no coug beads to be found in New Orleans. You can get them for most college teams but no UCLA or WSU in the Pac 12. :(

Lafayette and the surrounding areas has some kickass Cajun food

I waddled back on the plane after visiting one weekend.

Best breakfast I ever had was at Cafe Des Amis in Breaux Bridge.

So we will probably go somewhere. We are likely going to NYC to visit friends during my Spring Break I’ll be going to Seattle for a wedding in June.

Europe some time would be nice as well. I’m liking having this college schedule again.

Going on a weeklong cruise and spending some time in Rome afterwards.

Only have a day in each though.

If possible day trip!

While the major destination cities are great once, try and make day trips out to see the country. My favorite place in the world is Montalcino Italy, West of the green road (toll road) between Rome and Florence.
Rent a car and enjoy!

If at all possible, visit the Cinque Terre

They’ve had some pretty terrible flooding recently so I’m not sure how hospitable the area currently is, but it’s worth looking into. My wife and I were scheduled to stay for a few days before moving on to Pisa, but we ended up scrapping the rest of our trip and staying put in Cinque Terre.

I’d also recommend visiting at least one of the hill towns along the way. The spots you list are obviously great places, but the smaller towns are a slower pace and less touristy.

I hadn't had a real vacation in almost 2-3 years until last October

when I got to go to Maui. Had been there before, but it had been a few years. Two kids under 3 years old, really busy at work, etc. Now, I want to go there every 6 months or so, or at the most, every year. It’s awesome there.

Have you been to Hawaii, Kyle? How would you compare Jamaica to Hawaii, if you have?

By the way, I went to Disney World with my then-girlfriend once (no kids) in July. Nothing like walking out the door to go to Disney World, having it be 90 degrees with 95% humidity at 8am, and to be sweating through your shirt by the time you’ve taken your fifth step out the door. I’m with you … fun place to go, but no real desire to ever go back there.

I have been to Hawaii. Maui specifically.

I really liked it, but I went with my family when I was in high school. We stayed at an all-inclusive resort (Sandals) in Jamaica, so it might not be an apples-to-apples comparison when one has free booze and one doesn’t.

I think Hawaii is probably the cheaper option, but if you don’t feel the need to do the excursions (like visit Bob Marley’s house, or go to these really famous waterfalls that you can walk up) and only want to veg by the pool or by the beach, Jamaica is pretty much the greatest place in the world. When there were too many people at the beach, we sat in the pool and ordered drinks from the swim up bar. You can’t tell me alcohol is included in the price, because then I’ll attempt to “get my moneys worth”. Overall though, Jamaica was more fun for us than Hawaii and Mexico. I guess it depends on where you go, though.

Vegas in March as well (Doing it annually)

Then again to Vegas in September.
I spent the holidays in Orlando with family an i would agree while it was fun, it is no where near the best place in Florida to go. I went to Miami and the Keys after i graduated this summer for over a week and loved it. Miami is by far the best place in Florida that i have visited. I stayed at the Palms which was extremely nice and fairly reasonable since it is a little off the main strip, but great beach access. I definitely we plan on going back, there are alot of great placed to find amazing food and things to do. We took a seaplane over Miami which was really cool. I would opt for anything in Europe over Miami but it was definitely cheaper then going out of the country or even to Hawaii. I think the beaches in Miami are better then Hawaii so i would go there over Hawaii, especially if you like night life and have already been to Hawaii.

As for Hawaii, if you have not been to Kauai then you are really missing out. I think it is the best island in Hawaii. If you love the nature it is a must see. The tropical rainforest and waterfalls are amazing.

My sister just got back from Santorini Greece and loved it. It is definitely on the top 5 places that i want to visit. She said the food was just absolutely amazing and one of the coolest places to walk around at dusk.

by WazzuCrew11 on Jan 3, 2012 10:04 AM PST reply actions

Kauai is great

My wife and I went a few years ago in May and it was relatively uncrowded. We found pretty cheap rates for beachside hotels (I think around $90 a night) and stayed in a couple different towns along the coast. It was great for low-key tourism, especially snorkeling, surfing and hiking. We really enjoyed roadside stands (smoothies, roasted wild boar, etc) and interacting with locals, which I don’t think you get as much on the bigger islands.

Perhaps most importantly, it’s where Jurassic Park was filmed.

by johnnycougar on Jan 3, 2012 11:45 AM PST up reply actions

The island is definitly way more low key and far less touristy

It keeps the natural beauty of the island that can not be found on the others. We took a helicopter ride around to the backside of the island and saw all of the waterfalls and where the filmed a lot of the movie. It was truly spectacular.

Vegas Pro-Tip

probably too late for this year if you’re already booked.

Go during Conference Championship weekend. It’s the best. Just as much good basketball, without the Ed Hardy crowds that March Madness will produce a week later.

by BigWood! on Jan 3, 2012 12:36 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah

I kinda consider myself a Vegas Pro after living in San Diego for a few years and quite a few trips each year. I like the March Madness crowd there actually and you get Saint Patrick’s day as well. It is hard to beat the excitement of that weekend, even though its hard to come out ahead, it adds excitement to the BYU vs Wofford type games which was epic.

Tickets are SUPER expensive (~2k per person round trip) but once you get there it is cheap. Of course, we’re also trying to save for a new car and a downpayment on a house and to start having kids…

Definitely doing Vegas in February though. Wife has a conference so while she’s in meetings all day I will have to find something to occupy my time.

Just curious, why Madagascar?

I’ve been to nearby Mauritius a few times. Talk about a long, long trip from Seattle! I flew British Airways to London (8 hrs) and then direct to Mauritius (12 hrs) with no overnight. I assume you’d have to fly to South Africa or maybe Dubai first to get to Madagascar??

Anyway, Mauritius has some of the most beautiful beaches you’ll find anywhere. The resorts are very nice too.

Like Costa Rica, it is also pretty rough in terms of being somewhat Third World-ish in the capital city.

Have fun. I don’t know much about Madagascar to be honest. I think they grow great cocoa beans there…that’s all I know about the country.

by westsidecougar1 on Jan 3, 2012 9:25 PM PST up reply actions

Mauritius is a random place to go.

Mrs. Kyle watched the hell out of HGTV over the break and there was a House Hunters International in Seychelles. It looked pretty great, and she said she wants to go now. Before Sporcle, I never knew these places existed. I felt so smart saying, “They’re islands off the coast of Africa”

If I didn’t laugh at myself I’d probably just die.

by Kyle Rancourt on Jan 3, 2012 9:53 PM PST up reply actions

I watch that show a lot...

…but my favorite is Locked Up Abroad. My wife thinks it’s because I have a fear of getting arrested overseas and thrown into prison. I think she’s onto something. Haha.

I’ve had a goal of visiting all continents before I expire, so prior to visiting Kenya two years ago, I gave myself credit for being on the African continent after visiting Mauritius. It was technically correct, right?

It is beautiful…and interestingly, a college friend of mine at WSU grew up there before I even knew where it was.

Seychelles looks really nice too.

It sounds excellent

Part of me feels though if I’m just going to relax on an island I should do it closer to home to save money. I usually am the type of person who tries to do too much on vacations to get my “money’s worth” which doesn’t save me a whole lot of stress. In this case, though, it’s probably the last big trip we’ll make before settling down with kids and a house so we want to enjoy it thoroughly.

by johnnycougar on Jan 4, 2012 9:42 AM PST up reply actions

I was fortunate in that my wife and I travel alike.

If it’s a short vacation, we’d rather chill by a pool or on a beach.

If it’s longer, we’ll do some sight seeing and then spend some time chilling by a pool or on a beach.

We took a trip to South Korea with my parents (my mom’s Korean) a few years ago, and it was a nightmare. My mom in particular is a power tourist. We went on tour after tour, spending 14 hours in the Korean equivalent of a minivan driving all over Jejudo, and literally, at one point got off of the morning tour bus to get on the evening tour bus in Seoul (also 14 hours). My wife got motion sickness every time because of their erratic driving.

We went to a set of waterfalls where my parents had taken a honeymoon photo. It’s a bit of a hike to get there, and it’s changed since they’d been there 35 years before (much more touristy). After 20 minutes of walking/hiking, we get to the actual waterfalls, and my mom grabs a stranger and asks him to take our picture. He does, and then she immediately tries to usher us back towards the “minivan.” Her attitude is literally, “get the picture to prove you were there, and then go to the next one.” It was a gorgeous sight (and site) and Mrs. Right and I wanted to take a moment to soak it in. Maybe dip a hand in the water to see how cold it was. Find out what fed the falls, look at the flora, etc. My mom literally tapped her toe and sighed for the 5 minutes we were there until we were moving back the way we came.

Dang, that's too bad

I’ve never traveled with anyone nearly that go-go-go. I’d hate to have a vacation ruined that way. I am more the type that always wants to be doing something but it doesn’t matter in particular what it is. Like when my wife and I went to Rome, we did the typical things (Coliseum, St. Peter’s Basilica, Piazza Navona, the Forum) but most of our time was spent meandering through the city and taking in the sights.

When I spent a year in Wales I had one big trip where I visited 12 European cities across 6 countries in 21 days, and that was a little much.

by johnnycougar on Jan 5, 2012 10:11 AM PST up reply actions

see, meandering

would fit into my idea of relaxing. I’d be down for that.

Yeah, it’s partially a Korean thing, I’m sure, as many of the other tourists we saw were similar. My parents are moving to the Phoenix area at the end of the month, and I told them we don’t want to power tour the Grand Canyon and all the other AZ sites the first time we come to visit.

When we went to Jamaica

I didn’t do anything the entire time. We either sat in the pool drinking (by the swim up bar) or laid out on the beach (by the cabana bar thing). I felt like it was weird that we didn’t do anything, but turns out, everyone was like “Oh man that’s just what I need. Sitting in the sun, drinking, doing absolutely nothing for a week.”

It was glorious.

My wife has always wanted to go

She grew up wanting to be a veterinarian and study the lemurs (she’s already accomplished the former) and Madagascar seemed as exotic a place as you could go from a dairy farm in Lynden. The variety of animals and topology of the island is really intriguing.

I think our cheapest option for a flight goes Albuquerque > Atlanta > Paris > South Africa (Johannesburg, maybe?) > Madagascar. Hell of a way to travel, and we’d probably have to be there close to 10 days to get over the jet lag and enjoy the island properly.

The whole vacation days thing is all turned around...

…and so is retirement for that matter.

We should all start out retired in our 20s, then start working in our 40s…with max vacation time in our account…which then diminishes every year until we stop working at, say, age 80…and then we expire.

I’m maxed out on vacation (8 weeks) and am too busy to take much time off.

They might figure out they don’t need me if I go away too long either.

It’s great to be a student again because of all the time off.

I’m heading to South Africa for spring break and on the way back we’re stopping in Amsterdam for a couple days. I have a month off after I graduate in May that I’ll be using to backpack around Europe (no plans yet, just flights to and from). Next year I’ll be living on the East Coast but am planning on making 4 college football games (2 WSU and 2 Texas). One will be in Pullman, I haven’t been back on campus sense graduation 7 years ago, and another will be ASU in Tempe where I live when not in school.

I don’t have a family yet so I really like to take trips with little to no notice. Last spring I went to London after purchasing a ticket a couple hours before takeoff. It was the best trip I’ve ever been on because there was no itinerary to keep up with and I could do whatever I felt like at the time.

Hope everyone had a great holiday season!

Since this is off topic

I have a off topic vacation/camping question. Does anyone have a tent trailer? We are looking to swoop up a cheap tent trailer for quick/short weekend camping trips, so we basically don’t have to sleep on the ground anymore (plus we can just fold and go) and we don’t want a big trailer for these small trips. Is there anything special I should know?

by SoCalCoug on Jan 3, 2012 2:49 PM PST reply actions

I'm don't know a ton about tent trailers, but did a little research a couple years ago.

It seemed to me that unless you were looking at a older tent trailer (leaks?), you were better off spending a little more for a hard walled trailer. I was shocked at the price of tent trailers. I like to camp, and go as often as I can. I’m still a traditional tent camper, but hope to move up to a 18 ft travel trailer or so. Are tents even allowed in the tailgating lots? I liked the idea of a tent trailer because I could throw an aluminum boat on the top of it.

Sometimes I act irrationally.

by dslagg on Jan 3, 2012 5:48 PM PST up reply actions

My dad's friends had one a while ago.

I don’t know about prices, but they said they wish they would have just spent the money on an actual trailer or camper. Not sure this helps at all since I’ve never used one, just passing along what I heard, echoing dslagg’s statements.

by Kyle Rancourt on Jan 3, 2012 7:30 PM PST up reply actions

I know a guy who swooped one up for about $1500

and it was really nice. He had no problems and it was good if you just wanted to throw a few things in your truck and take the tent trailer for a weekend trip. Just park and open up your trailer and you are in business. It seems like it beats finding that one large rock (in the whole campground) under your sleeping bag.

But I’m also working holidays and weekends to earn the extra time.

March: Vegas (spending the whole time in the sports book with a cigar for the conference tourney weekend. Way underrated weekend to be in Vegas in my opinion).
April: Charlotte, NC (sister-in-law’s wedding. Whoope)
July: Vegas (bachelor party…..there will be NO trips to the Sapphire Stri….I mean, restaurant)
September: Paris, London, Vegas (honeymoon, 4 days in each European city and back to Vegas for the WSU vs. UNLV game. Pitching out for a suite for the Mrs. and myself to stay in)

My brother and I are looking for somewhere a little different than the traditional spring break spots. Not necessarily to go and party, more just for a vacation. These places keep coming up when searching for possible destinations.

I've been to CR for a week about ten years ago...

…the beaches are great, the rain forest tour was cool, and the people are nice.

Good food…but somewhat “third-world-ish”. As you know, there are many Americans living in CR, so it’s not too rough.

I recommend it.

I haven’t yet been to PR or Panama, so I can’t help you there.

Going to Spain this summer...

I’ve been there several times for work, but this time it is for vacation to visit my daughter teaching over in Madrid.

Great food, terrific wines, some beautiful scenery, plus a lot of historical sites. Should be fun.

Jealous

My brother is over in Madrid teaching English, and he is loving it. As I’m sure your daughter will tell you, be careful with your luggage and rental cars. My brother has had rental cars broken into twice and all his stuff stolen, and he’s only been there four months. You’d think he would have learned the first time, but that’s another story.

Anyone have any cool ideas for local (in the NW) vacations?

I know there are many, but I’m curious to hear if anyone has favorites.

The penisula is beautiful to visit.

Also went to Friday Harbor in the once offseason (April). Was great because it wasn’t crowded but still plenty of stuff open and it is almost always sunny there (rain shadow from the Olympics).

I'm a country guy

So I’m partial to Leavenworth or Western Montana. I think most Cougs would enjoy leavenworth. Great beer and a very fun environment. As for Montana I like Big Fork or any where else around Flat Head Lake. I went to Big Fork a year ago and felt that things were very relaxed. The bar/restaurant owned by our motel was fun and the future Mrs Slagg had the best patai (spelling?) she’s ever had. Plus there was like a 2 or 3 year old baby sitting at the bar with his parents. He was in a booster seat on a bar stool, just chilling.

Sometimes I act irrationally.

All along the coast from Olympic National Park down to Tillamook in Oregon

Or if you just want the beach, Seaside and Cannon Beach are pretty nice places along the Oregon Coast. Driving along the coast is great, and you have to stop in Tillamook for cheese and / or ice cream.

Dude! Just go then

It isn’t that far to drive and could make a nice weekend trip. There are relatively cheap hotels along the coast and you can get the Pinnacle of Cheese straight from the source.

Tillamook is the Pinnacle of Cheese?

Babybel would like a word with you.

Glacier is unreal any time of year.

And Mt. Rainier Park when asshats aren’t killing rangers there. >:(

Sun Mountain

Or somewhere in the Methow Valley. It’s like having southwest Montana in your own backyard.

Wow.

I'm a glass half full kind of guy. My glass just happens to be half full of bourbon. And sitting next to several empty glasses.

Actually

I think my favorite is the leaning tower of Pisa. WHERE I’M ACTUALLY LEANING. I laughed for about 10 minutes straight.

Where am I going? Some lake resort ahaha. Being in college has kind of put me out of the loop.
