WSU Vs. Cal: Faisal Aden Leads The Cougs Over Cal, 77-75
You have to love this new Faisal Aden.
Aden went straight to the basket time and time again and all but clinched the Pac-12 player of the week award with a 24-point performance. Faisal was efficient for the second straight game, scoring 24 points on about 19 uses.
The offense played excellent as a whole, putting up 1.12 points per possession on the conference's best defense. Brock Motum had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
After trailing for most of the game, WSU took possession of the ball with the score tied at 74 and 47 seconds left to play. Freshman DaVonte Lacy came up huge, knocking down a three and drawing a foul to put WSU up 77-74 with 18 seconds remaining.
Jorge Gutierrez missed a three to tie the game, then missed a three that would have given Cal the win after a missed free throw. Gutierrez paced Cal with 19 points and 6 assists.
An exciting come-from-behind win for the second straight game. A weekend sweep of the two best teams in the conference. Some redemption for the team's most scrutinized individual. All around awesome weekend.
That's all I have for now. Too excited to type. GO COUGS!

Why would they leave early? Must have a agenda to follow. Maybe meeting with the coaching staff.

Oh my gosh. So exciting to be at that one!
Although I must say, that was easily the worst officiated game I have seen all year and maybe ever. The refs just could not get anything right. I mean, you expect the refs to be iffy on foul calling; it’s a very subjective art. But, when they blatantly miss out of bounds calls??? Even one was missed in favor of the Cougs…
I heard one time that the Cougars played a game where the refs were good

It was a typical random Pac-12 reffing performance, so you get stuff like this:
First half fouls:
Cal: 3
WSU: 6
Second half fouls:
Cal: 12
WSU: 11

Not to be the buzzkill but...
we had almost 10K and then 9K for our two Spokane games. We had about 3K and 6K for these games…just saying.
Pullman games are the best, but we need to get people in the seats. For some reason I think Q Johnson will be the guy to do that.

But, don't forget that students don't pay for tickets either...
Weather was bad this week for sure, thought we’d see more for the game today with the win over Stanford. I like the games in Spokane, that’s where we have the best chance to grow season ticket sales.
There’s tons of students in Spokane, why can’t we sell some student/general admission tickets and have a smaller student section for those games?
Students sounded loud for both games this week, loved hearing it on the radio/webcast!
They actually let students in for free in Spokane if you had a sports pass.

Right, but look at how much a sports pass is per game versus actual tickets.
WSU doesn’t make much off of sports passes. No school does, which is why you see places like USC and uw move their students to the end zones then sell their old seats for big bucks.

He had one early on in the game.
Also had one where he had his back to the basket and laid it in.
What’s with the dislike for the reverse layups? If they go in, they go in. The cougars had 5 or 6 reverse layups this entire game.
Seems like he goes for them a lot when they aren't really needed.
With how good of a free throw shooter he is, go up strong and take the foul.

His layups were more back door layups tonight. The ones we are complaining about are when he leaves his feet on one side then tries to go under the basket and flip it in.

You are refering to second clutch type shots I assume.

Why does Devonte Lacy have trouble dribbling?
Seems to lose the ball a lot by just losing a handle on it.
Really not sure
He’s got good handles — made his living in high school going to the rim. Perhaps he’s having a hard time with the strength of the players at this level.

I'm confident 2012-13 will see a much improved Davonte Lacy
Around these parts, a man could get hurt for wearing purple.
After watching him in HS
I honestly thought he’d have to add a solid 3-point shot later to become a good Pac-12 player. That he’s already got that, and he just needs to be a bit more solid to the rim, has me completely excited.
There is no doubt all the tools are there
I would still like to see him consistently knock down 3’s for a few more games before I say, “Yeah, he has added the three ball.” But, no doubt that he has stepped it up since conference ball started. As far as attacking he rim, there have been glimpses of his ability to do that. He needs that dynamic to his game.
You know Bone is going to sit down with him at the end of the season and tell him, “Next year, we need X,Y, and Z from you.” I think the expereince from this season culminated with the work to improve those things next year are going to make next season a memorable one.
Around these parts, a man could get hurt for wearing purple.
You are aware that he's taken 90 3s and hit 38 percent of them, right?
Whatever he needed to prove from out there, he’s proven it.
You are right about pointing out that the overall pcture looks good
But he has padded that stat big time in PAC12 play, which is what I was pointing out. Check out the splits:
First 10 games 14-42 29.8%
Non conference Total 19-58 32.7%
PAC 12: 15- 32 46.9%
He has been hot over the course of 7 PAC12 games, I’m still interested to see where that average will be over the next 7-10 games.
Around these parts, a man could get hurt for wearing purple.
Just give me until after the next homestand
I suspected the slower start was from confidence and “freshman jitters.” You seem to have changed your mind from the 12/14 issue of CSW where you write
If there was one thing I’d complain about with Lacy so far, this is it. Remember that great two-point percentage I told you about? He’s actually only taken 21 twos. He has, however, taken 47 threes — far and away the MOST on the team! Predictably, he’s only hitting on 30 percent of those — far too low for someone taking as many shots from out there as he is.
Now 43 shots later, you have changed your mind. But, to your credit, you pretty much foresaw the turnaround
His stroke looks fairly consistent, and I’m confident this is eventually going to become a formidable part of his game. But right now? There’s no way he should be shooting more than twice as many threes as twos.
I think we can agree that things are looking up and we are going in the right direction. I just want to see the pattern over the next few games. I also agree that in spite of his recent success, he needs to shoot more twos.
Around these parts, a man could get hurt for wearing purple.
You are correct
After seeing him in high school, and seeing his slow shooting start, I felt like he was taking far too few 2s. To some degree, I still do. But it’s pretty undeniable at this point that he’s a capable three-point shooter.
My main concern is always shot selection. And he’s not forcing them, even if I feel like he sometimes settles. So I guess I’m cool with it, even if begrudgingly.

I was trying to trace one through the UC Riverside loss, I forgot that Utah had some shabby losses too. But when I was making mine, I came across some of those teams so I could have gone down the same path.

I think the key is to find those relatively rare games where an East Coast team plays a West Coast team. It normally isn’t such a big deal because the top teams across the country beat up on each other all the time, but this year the Pac-12 is really down and the Mountain West isn’t much better.
Man, a 20 linker would be epic. I ran across SC Upstate a couple times for mine but couldn’t make it work.
