TTU is no WSU

You guys should be ecstatic about getting Leach to coach the Cougs. Any team would be lucky to have him. You'll be winning a lot of games.

As a Tech grad of a couple of decades ago I can say in hindsight he is better off not being there. The students are indifferent and the administration is corrupt.

Although most of my immediate family members are TTU grads I had no problem in suggesting to my daughter she attend Columbia instead of Tech.

Don't get me wrong, I think the folks in Lubbock are some of the friendliest people in the world. The students, however, are a jealous bunch and are envious of grads who have done better than they can ever hope to (I base this on the fact that I have grad degrees from Texas A&M and The University of Texas as well and they are always extremely happy and supportive when their grads do well).

If you treat Leach right, he'll be around for a long time and you'll be treated to some wonderfully exciting football. Congratulations WSU! You have a lot of new Cougar fans.

Being that my impression is your a TTU guy

I was just curious as to what you might think us Cougs should expect when it comes to how many TTU fans will come to our games

by CougSinger on Jan 29, 2012 9:46 PM PST reply actions

I know I will.

There is talk of drawing up to 1,000 Leach fans per game. A lot of that will depend on how easy it is to physically get to the game. I know my wife and I and another couple will be attending at least 3 games each (we live in Greenwich Village, NYC).

I’ve been to Seattle before but how difficult is it to get to Pullman? We have friends to stay with but while we are there we want to make a mini-vacation out of it. Good luck and I expect a Pac 12 Championship within 3-5 years. Strap yourselves in. It’s gonna be fun.

Pullman is 285 miles from Seattle.

It is very easy, getting on I-90 until you get to Highway 26, then it goes straight to Pullman. It is a 5 hour drive though.

Or pay an extra 10 badgillion dollars

To fly into Spokane and then from Spokane to Pullman on Horizon Air.

by jackswift on Jan 30, 2012 10:13 AM PST up reply actions

Horizon doesn't do GEGPUW

Fly from Seattle or occasionally Boise to Pullman. I’ve never seen a one-way fare more than $250 (which is certainly absurd, but hey small market).

by Aaron Whiteman on Jan 30, 2012 10:32 AM PST up reply actions

Whoops

I remember the one time I flew out of PUW it was Horizon, so I just thought they went everywhere Horizon sometimes goes. Maybe they can fly from Boise to Spokane and parachute out over the Palouse?

I am originally from West Texas.

That is a hop, skip, and a jump for us. Besides, I’ll bet the scenery is pretty amazing.

Bing thought it was pretty nice

Make sure you plan to hit a few in late November. Snow games are the best!

Only in the spring.

By summer, all that green turns gold. By winter, it’s all brown (except when it is white, which is not nearly often enough).

by Aaron Whiteman on Jan 30, 2012 6:44 PM PST up reply actions

4.25 to 4.5 hours

Even driving the speed limit. I guess you could say 5 hours if you’re going to stop somewhere for a meal.

by WinOrLoseCougsBooze on Jan 30, 2012 12:51 PM PST up reply actions

As a Tech grad I would say

there isn’t much chance of me coming to Pullman, especially if snow is involved. On the other hand, games in Las Vegas or some other easily reachable locale are entirely possible. Otherwise, I will be hoping to stream Pac12 games via my htpc.

Guns blazing in Pullman.

My sister and brother in law graduated from Texas Tech and always rubbed it in my face. Now I get to rub in their face how we have Mike Leach and they don’t. Having been to Lubbock and living in Pullman just letting you know the size of the city is very different! Your campus is way to spread out for my like but at the same time at least you don’t have monster hills.
Not hard to get here though. Good thing you have friends here or else getting a hotel is a pain in the ass. Everyone here is super friendly though and as long as you enjoy alcohol and can scream, “Go Cougs!” be prepared for 3 great weekends! What games are you guys coming for?

by CrimsonCougar on Jan 30, 2012 10:47 AM PST reply actions

Not Sure Yet.

I am looking forward to making some new friends, though (and drinking a lot of beer).

My buddies said the people there are pretty wild but very friendly.

Tech fans (some, not all) are arrogant, cocky, and lack any semblance of class (however, the women are quite beautiful).

They have some crazy, warped idea that they are an Ivy League school. Not!

I got my Ph. D at The University of Texas. Much classier. I am so glad Leach is with you guys now.

You're coming to the right place.

Pullman is perfect for drinking and meeting new people. Also include how much you hate the Huskies and you’ve got more then a few new friends. Your buddies are right though. Being in Lubbock I would say our fans are a little similar. We are very crazy and passionate about our school and everyone loves the Cougs whether we are winning or losing. My sister and her husband are coming for Apple Cup though which is on black Friday this year but is definitely the best game of the year!!!!

by CrimsonCougar on Jan 30, 2012 2:48 PM PST up reply actions

Whatever games you do decide upon

While you’re in Pullman, some places to eat out at are Tam’s Place, Cougar Country Drive-In, and The Daily Grind

by CougSinger on Jan 30, 2012 12:20 PM PST reply actions

Understood.

1. I said “some” fans, “not all” fans, are arrogant, cocky and lack any semblance of class. Where do you see the word “entire”?

2. A reasonable person would deduce that I will be attending future Cougar games because I am a Mike Leach fan.

3. Many parents are dead set on their children attending their Alma Mater. I am not. I want my daughter to get the best education possible and live close to home (NYC).

4. Where did I take a shot at Tech academics? Tech has had a number of very successful graduates including Jerry Rawls, Ed Whiteacre, and Mark Lanier.

5. I really don’t care what you think about me or where I got my degrees from. I do not know you nor do I care to know you.

by RdRdr19881991 on Jan 30, 2012 6:12 PM PST up reply actions

Well, ok.
“As a Tech grad of a couple of decades ago I can say in hindsight he is better off not being there. The students are indifferent and the administration is corrupt.”

You didn’t say “some” students. You just said students, which implies all students.

“Although most of my immediate family members are TTU grads I had no problem in suggesting to my daughter she attend Columbia instead of Tech.”

This is like me saying, “Although most of my immediate family members are WSU grads, I had no problem suggestion to my daughter that she attend Harvard instead of Wazzu.” Columbia is one of the best schools in the nation. That was a hard choice?

“Don’t get me wrong, I think the folks in Lubbock are some of the friendliest people in the world. The students, however, are a jealous bunch and are envious of grads who have done better than they can ever hope to (I base this on the fact that I have grad degrees from Texas A&M and The University of Texas as well and they are always extremely happy and supportive when their grads do well).”

Are you kidding me? Where did you say “some”? You said people in Lubbock are some of the friendliest people in the world. Great. But then you say “the students”. You imply that all the students are jealous and envious of other people who graduated who have done better. Then you go on to say that you base these sweeping allegations on the fact that you have degrees from two of Tech’s rival schools. Cool for you. You’re a troll.

Also, I’m fine if you think I’m a jerk. But part of my job as moderator of this blog is to weed out trolls. I was asking you an honest question, because this whole post is basically “Leach is great! Tech sucks! Woo!” If there’s a problem, we can talk about it away from prying eyes. Feel free to e-mail me. It’s listed at the bottom of the page. Otherwise, stuff like this is not ok.

Are All Cougar Fans Like Kyle Rancourt?

Most people I’ve spoken to, including friends in Seattle, said WSU has a pretty awesome fan base.

I don’t want to get there and meet a bunch of Kyle’s.

If so, I may have to change some of my travel plans for Fall 2012. That’s too bad. I’m really looking forward to seeing Leach coach again.

Don't waste your time with this guy.

Not sure why Seth hasn’t banned him over at DTN. We havn’t figured out who he is, but something isn’t quite right.

Okay, going to an Ivy League school may seem like a no-brainer.

But:

If she wanted to be a writer, The University of Iowa might be the best school for her.

If she wanted to be a broadcaster, Syracuse University might be the best school for her.

If she wanted to be a dancer, Julliard might be the best school for her.

If she wanted to be involved in criminal justice, Sam Houston St. might be her best choice.

If she wanted to be an astronomer, Cal Berkeley might be the best school for her.

My point is that each of these schools are considered the best in their respective fields.

Certainly Wazzu has something that is considered their specialty for which they are very proud.

So here is something for you to ponder. What school in the United States is the hardest to get in to? It might not be what you think.

by RdRdr19881991 on Jan 30, 2012 9:42 PM PST up reply actions

What does this have to do with the conversation?

Your original statement was that you’d rather have your daughter go to Columbia than Texas Tech. It seemed rather pompous, but whatever.

by Kyle Rancourt on Jan 30, 2012 10:29 PM PST up reply actions

It has everything to do with the conversation.

Please follow simple analytical reasoning.

I stated I had no problem suggesting my daughter attend Columbia. She wants to study Photography and the Fine Arts, for which the school is well-known.

You stated “This is like me saying, "Although most of my immediate family members are WSU grads, I had no problem suggestion to my daughter that she attend Harvard instead of Wazzu." Columbia is one of the best schools in the nation. That was a hard choice?”

Well then you are saying your daughter should attend Harvard instead of WSU regardless of what her goals and passions are for the sake of prestige not because of the pursuit of knowledge. (If you have a daughter I want to make it clear I am in no way picking on her. I am using the word daughter in its most generic form for the sake of debate).

What if your daughter’s dream was to be, say, an anthropologist and WSU had the most respected anthropology department in the country. Wouldn’t you be doing her a disservice by suggesting she go to Harvard instead of WSU simply because of the prestige of Harvard even though she would get a better education in anthropology at WSU?

Would you still send her to Harvard for vanity’s sake even though she wanted to be an astronomer and Cal Berkeley has the most respected astronomy department in the country?

How about Harvard instead of Iowa even though her dream was to become a great writer?

If my daughter wanted to study wind engineering I would suggest she go to TTU instead of Columbia because even though Columbia may sound more prestigious, it doesn’t even have a department of wind engineering. How would going to Columbia help her learn more about wind engineering just because it is an Ivy League school?

I can debate you on this all night if you wish. Let’s just keep the debate rational and intelligent instead of resorting to name-calling and inflammatory statements.

by RdRdr19881991 on Jan 30, 2012 11:34 PM PST up reply actions

With all due respect, I don't think anyone wants to debate this.

Maybe we can just let it go. Kyle (as a mod.) addressed his concerns, you responded. Frankly, we’re all a lot more preoccupied with upcoming Signing Day than which school is best for what. Go Cougs.

Seeing Leach Coach or Watching Tech Play Isn't Even Worth This.

Trying to figure out who I am? Are you a stalker? Do I need to call the police?

by RdRdr19881991 on Jan 30, 2012 6:57 PM PST reply actions

Woah woah fellas can we all just calm down here a little bit?

Look, i’m not gonna judge who’s right or wrong here, but bashing each other isn’t the way to go about things. i’m a Coug, somewhat new on here, but it’s my pleasure to see more ppl wanna come to wazzu games and all the power to ya. maybe going off about a former school on another school’s blog isn’t the best way to do things, but even so it should be our job as Cougs to let you know what CougCenter is about rather than call you out.

by CougSinger on Jan 30, 2012 7:02 PM PST reply actions   2 recs

Dear Coug Singer, I Agree.

You are wise beyond your years.

I could have chosen my words more carefully.

I am mad Tech doesn’t have Leach.

I am happy Wazzu does.

I certainly didn’t mean to bash anyone.

I also don’t believe in name-calling.

I apologize.

I might not speak for all Cougs alike, but it's my pleasure

To have you interested in cougar football. like they say ‘every voice matters’, and we’d much rather have 37,001 than 37,000 in martin stadium. if i am correct, it is our intention to bring in more fans and to make those who attend 3 games to wanna attend 4 games.

Coug Singer

You might be a great singer but if you ever decide to choose a profession in marketing or diplomacy you are going to be extremely successful.
