WSU Football Schedule 2012: Apple Cup Remains On Black Friday

After a few delays and plenty of speculation, the Pac-12 finally released the 2012 football schedule today. As rumored, the Apple Cup will indeed be played on the Friday after Thanksgiving, but other than that, WSU's conference schedule actually sets up nicely.

  • Sat., Sept. 1 @ BYU
  • Sat., Sept. 8 vs Eastern Washington
  • Sat., Sept. 15 @ UNLV
  • Sat., Sept 22 vs Colorado
  • Sat., Sept 29 vs Oregon (in Seattle)
  • Sat., Oct. 6 @ Oregon State
  • Sat., Oct. 13 vs California
  • Sat. Oct. 20 BYE
  • Sat., Oct. 27 @ Stanford
  • Sat., Nov. 3 @ Utah
  • Sat., Nov. 10 vs UCLA
  • Sat., Nov. 17 @ Arizona State
  • Fri., Nov 23 vs Washington

Seven games, then a bye is probably about as good as you can hope for in terms of breaking up the season. Only one time does WSU go on the road for back-to-back games. Overall, this looks pretty good to me.

EDIT NUSS: The one thing that most people are complaining about is the stretch between the Colorado game and the UCLA game in which WSU plays just once in Pullman, thanks to the Seattle game against Oregon. This seems to be an unintended consequence of making that contest a Pac-12 game, and while I'm sure the new coach won't complain about it as much as the last coach did, I wonder how long this can go on.

Not crazy about 1 Pullman game in 6 weeks

But the Seattle game will do that to you…..

I agree completely

Honestly it was the only criticism I could find, and that is mostly because it means I only get to go to Pullman 1 time in 6 weeks. I am sure the team will handle it just fine.

I must be dumb as a post...what am I missing?

The Oregon game is in Seattle, but where’s the 6 wk gap?

One game in a six week stretch

Are the big gaps for home games common amongst BCS schools? Two years in a row now, seems funky. Anyone know of other BCS schools that run into these scheduling issues?

by BoboHunter on Jan 4, 2012 3:22 PM PST up reply actions

Get it, but still seems odd

I get why the Seattle game creates a problem, but thought there might be ways to avoid going so many weekends in the middle of football season without playing on campus – but maybe not. Just seems weird.

Oh nevermind.

I guess I just view it differently.

We play Colorado in Pullman on 9/22.

Then Cal in Pullman on 10/13, and UCLA 11/10.
So between late September and mid-November (~six week stretch) only one game will be played in Pullman (Cal). Hope that clears things up.

by 206Coug on Jan 4, 2012 1:23 PM PST up reply actions

No, I got it when they first posted it.

I guess I’m weird (surprised face) and just look at it as 3 games in 7 wks. instead. My glass is half full, dang it!

But seriously, I would love it if the Oregon game were at Martin Stadium this year since I’m on this side of the state. I guess I’m hoping down the road when we’re consistently awesome, and expand stadium seating, we can move the game back here.

is only Cal on 10/13.

First off, damn you for getting this up right before my FanPost. Shucks.

Second, this is about as ideal as the schedule can get. No reason they shouldn’t be 4-0 heading into the Oregon game and there’s a distinct likelihood you could be 6-1 heading to the Farm. No reason this team can’t get to 8 wins and make a couple of trips to Las Vegas this year.

True but

Against a team that, near as I can tell (and I say this with a huge caveat that I didn’t watch them last year and looked only at their schedule) was just decent, I think we have a good chance to go on the road and come home 1-0

True story

we went to Olive Garden on a Sunday and everyone that worked there wondered why we were there. When we walked the first they said, “so is the power out or something, whatcha doing out on the Sunday?” Me and my friends looked at each other confused, but then figured we it out. I felt very discriminated against being white and not Mormon. Still scared from it today.

That is what I was thinking,

Completely agree

I can get behind a P-12 game in Seattle, but not limiting it to only the Oregon schools. Sure, it makes sense because they’re right there, but I would hope we (and any P-12 school’s Seattle alum) would be able to fill CLink for one game. I just hate to think that students in Pullman that can’t make the trip over will never see WSU play an Oregon school.

by GingerCoug on Jan 4, 2012 1:50 PM PST up reply actions

for the 95th time the Seattle game will happen

Moos has made it clear that we will play UO or OSU in Seattle yearly for the next 10 years. I am solidly behind this idea. It’s important for the university, for foundation meetings and political exposure, and the revenue potential from filling Century Link is way too high to pass up, It also is a chance for fans in the Seattle area who don’t go to Pullman for games to see the Cougars. That’s why it was so damaging for WSU to have a face-plant against OSU last fall. Our players had to take a 6-hour bus trip (whine, whine) and that’s why we lost!. The travel didn’t bother OSU one bit.
—The game will happen. Give it up.

I don't like the Seattle game because it is not a real home game.

I went to both the Hawaii and Oklahoma State games and those games felt like home games. Against OSU last year there were a substantial number of Beaver fans and next year when we play Oregon it will basically be a neutral field game. The nice thing about Martin Stadium is that it is filled by mostly students for every game, something that we lose when we go to Seattle. Although, I wouldn’t mind going back to playing a non-conference game there.

by Alex Kelly on Jan 4, 2012 3:05 PM PST up reply actions

Due to the Leach hiring?

This is honestly all conjecture on my part, but I feel that Oregon has a larger following in the Seattle area than the Beavers or at least got one after recent success. There were a surprising number of OSU fans there this year and I can’t help picturing even more Duck fans flooding the CLink this year.

I would expect more Duck fans than Beavers, but how much I’m not really sure. There’s been a lot of bandwagon duck fans these last couple years who I don’t think would make the trip. Lots alums in the Portland area too though. But honestly, I’m not too worried about it.

The home and away advantage to me seems to have a lot more to do with

the player’s change in regimen than how many fans are on each side of the field. Going to C-Link involves everything from travel time, hotel stay, and the use foreign facilities. If the game sold out with Cougar fans and created a 12th man atmosphere like you get at Seahawk games, it would be an advanage for us. But you still can’t replace the comforts of having the game in town. I think that is what is most beneficial to the players.

Sorry the atmosphere isn’t as cozy as Martin Stadium, but Mr. Moos will be laughing all the way to the bank.

Has nothing to do with the fan base

it is basic math: What does Martin seat? 40k? Centurylink seats 67k. 27k seats at an average of $40 gives you a gross increase of $1,080,000. $40 might even be a low estimate, since I am sure there are a lot of luxury boxes. I am sure it costs more to rent for a day than it would to host the game in Martin, but the net to the athletic department has got to be phenomenal.

I think Moos will allot a majority of tickets for Cougar fans

then if they don’t sell he will offer what is left of Cougs tickets to Duck fans. I think Cougs will out number Ducks. CLink will be full. More Cougs want to see up play the Ducks than the Beavers. Plus it will be Leach’s first time coaching in front of Seattle. That guy pulls in the fans.

But it seems like the majority of people against it now just don’t like that it’s a conference opponent. The Seattle game didn’t draw nearly as much ire from fans when it was OOC (and businesses still lost the home date).

If we start selling out Martin AND donate enough cash to cover schollies then the Seattle game can die.

and typically it is nice to get down to California for some warm weather. This year, instead of visiting friends in LA and seeing the Ducks play the Trojans on November 3, I will go to Seattle to see the Cougs. The hiring of Leach made me much more excited for this game, and the fact it is in Seattle and much more convenient than going to Pullman makes the decision complete. Not necessarily though.

It depends on the volume of the water, not necessarily the depth. As long as the water is deep enough for the shark to swim, it’s no contest.

I don't know.

If the Bear can stand up I think it has an advantage. It can attack from behind, even if the shark bit it’s leg I think the bear just mauls it to death.

No matter what type of water,

if the bear stopped the shark from swimming… game over. Sharks must swim to get oxygen, if they stop they suffocate.

Seattle game shouldn't include OU/OSU

I’m all for promoting WSU but the game in Seattle should rotate PAC 12 schools outside the Pacific Northwest. It should be a win-win for both programs. The opposing team gets exposure in Seattle while the Cougars get to promote themselves in the biggest city in Washington.

It seems like the Oregon game this season is going to be a home game for them in Seattle. I would rather they play the Ducks or Beavers in Pullman, rather than travel over to Seattle.

by jeremyb91 on Jan 4, 2012 4:05 PM PST reply actions

The entire reason for Oregon/OSU is that their close fan base will buy tickets and other schools already get exposure in Seattle

Game doesn’t work if we play Arizona in October in a season when both teams stink and nobody shows up.

Can’t even imagine what the 2011 game would have looked like without the OSU fans.

I am a proponent of the dog and pony show Seattle game

Make the game one that we can win and show off in front of the Seattle fanbase. I like to see a matchup between a non BCS school or an FCS school (Grambling State). Just make sure it is a win so Moos can get up in front of the crowd at halftime or between quarters and make a passionate plea for money with a lead on the scoreboard. That is what these types of games should be about in my opinion. Its like hosting an invitational tournament in basketball. You have to make sure you come out on top.

by Say Howdy Kid on Jan 4, 2012 10:30 PM PST up reply actions

WSU won't stink it up

Bill Moos won’t ever be looking at the Seattle game as a game where WSU stinks. He wants the Seattle game to be a game of promoting the Cougars by playing good games and showing the entire state and recruits on the west side that WSU if for real. I can’t imagine one game where WSU is go into a game where they are expected to stink this year let alone the Oregon game going forward.

This year it’s highly possible the Cougars are 3-1 before they face Oregon in Seattle with a bunch of Seattle area WSU alumni excited to buy tickets to see Mike Leach. Because they are facing Oregon, tickets are going to be harder to come by and this could be a home game for Oregon when instead they should be playing a team like UCLA where it’s a treated like a home game.

I’d rather have a non-sellout filled with Cougars then a sold-out stadium filled with Duck fans.

But there will be plenty of Oregon fans who are willing to make a two hour drive from the Portland area and other Oregon alumni in the Seattle area vying for plenty of the tickets. The tickets would be much easier to come by if they were playing UCLA rather than Oregon.

the seattle game should be a conference game

Having it against the Oregon schools is the reason it might sell out. It wouldn’t against any other conference team. Moos has made it cllear that even if the uo/OSU fans buy a majority of tickets the revenue will still be the same. I think the home-field advantage is overrated. Tell me again how much the home fiield advantage has helped us over the last 4 years.? It shouldn’t be the fans’ responsibility to get the team to play hard. The WSU fans in Seattle last year were ready to cheer had the Cougars shown any interest in playing hard or playing well. The team didn’t even bother to show up.
-=I dislike non-conference games anyway, and if I had my way we would play 11 conference games. I especially dislike non-conference bodybag games. How did playing ISU and UNLV help us last year? They only falsely made us look better than we were. The reason the Seattle game was faltering was playiing teams like Grambling. Nobody cares.

It could if you have three undefeated BCS teams and one national championship game

My main point thing is that I i like seeing PAC12 teams compete and win outside of the conference because I think it makes the conference look stronger. But in reality, it is worse for Oregon in terms of not having a test before you go into conference play. I think all BCS teams should have at least one test and two lesser opponents before going into the conference schedule. It must a fluke that they ended up with this schedule. I also think you can also overschedule outside of the conference like us next year with Auburn and BYU. Like I said, I like all teams to play at least 1 formidable opponent. .

Kansas State cancelled a home and home at the last minute

They were supposed to play us in 2011 (thus the open spot for the LSU game) and 2012 (thus Tennessee Tech). Georgia cancelled a home and home in ‘15 and ’16 with us last year. Tennessee almost backed out of coming to Autzen in 2013 in that home and home, but their fans were nice enough to tell the AD to sack up and make the trip. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Texas A&M backs out of our ’17 and ’18 contests.

Also, Arkansas State was ranked in the 25-30 range at the end of this year, and Fresno State usually was decent.

Long story short, the B1G-Pac alliance will help Oregon out a lot schedule wise.

Eh, im not sold on that either

Stanford at Washington looks to be a key matchup and i would assume most would think it would be better then

Oregon State at Arizona
Arizona State at California
UCLA at Colorado
Oregon at Washington State – However this IS the game of the Week IMO

Also the next week ,USC at Utah looks to be better (My guess at 1 & 2 in the south). But you could make a case for the Oregon vs Washington game just because of the rivalry.

by WazzuCrew11 on Jan 4, 2012 9:33 PM PST up reply actions

Stanford without Luck

And UW is gaining ground but still isn’t a top tier program. That’s just a week without a clear game of the week, and networks will default to the biggest media market team. Hello UCLA at Colorado.

by 02Coug on Jan 4, 2012 10:22 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah but in reality

I don’t think Stanford is going to completely fall off and drop to the bottom of the North and since those teams finished 2 & 3 in the North this season i would guess they will be predicted to finish the same. That means that game would be to determine who comes in second in the North.

Also i would bet money that the UCLA at Colorado game is not the game the big networks will pick up. Our game has more national media potential especially since it will be two 4-0 teams. :-)
