HOT COUGAR ACTION: An Assortment Of Links
The WSU men's and women's basketball teams return to the hardwood tonight for the second week of Pac-12 play. The men take on Utah and Craig will be along with a preview later today, but until then we have an assortment of links including more reaction to the Pac-12 schedule release and a Mike Leach interview.
First, Leach joined the 110 Sports podcast where he discussed a variety of topics I have not previously heard him talk about. There was the obligatory Craig James question, but Leach also discussed how his lawsuit compares to Mike Price's and even whether Leach would have issue taking the Pac-12 coaches media trip to ESPN. You can listen to the podcast via the link below, Leach comes on around the 9:45 mark.

Not sure if this is kosher but I found 2 more good ones people might find interesting...
Condotta writes an article about in-state recruiting. Its predominantly about the school to the west but I’d say that’s as much a statement about how our recruiting has gone as it is a homer article. Top 5 players in the state and we didn’t even get a sniff? I’m hoping that’s about to change, Max Browne perhaps?
Also, Miller adds on a little analysis to the Pac 12 schedule. I would just say our own bad stretch is self-inflicted and overall looking around the scheduling gods smiled greatly on us for 2012.
Don’t worry, I at least made sure to click the “open in new window” button!
This daily post is designed for people to throw out any links they find in the comments.

So it is a Road game...
Washington State then has a huge road test in Seattle against the Oregon Ducks, which could feature one of the most high-profile contests of the season between two exciting offenses.
I guess SB Nation Seattle feels the same way I do, its going to be a great game being played on the road.
Let me try again...So our series with Oregon can't be...
called a “home and home”…or a “home and away”…it is an “away and away”.
(sorry…I just resist). :-)

This all depends on Coug Nation!
There’s no reason why we can’t put 40-50K Cougs in the Clink with the quackers getting the rest. I love that we have a Seattle game and think its a great idea, but I HATE playing the Oregon schools there. If anything we should use this game to move a bad home game for us, like Saturday’s before/after Turkey day or Labor day. Labor day actually works great because tons of students make the trek home for the 3 day weekend.
That said I’m guessing we can’t “flex” the Seattle game every year, but I’d hope its at least being discussed!
you greatly overestimate Coug Nation
the stands are going to be very ugly this year.
Not so fast my friend!
We had 1,300 people at the freakin’ press conference with 500 turned away. I think Coug nation will awake from its slumber. Hopefully the people who say they’ll boycott the Seattle game can get over themselves and show up. It’ll be a good game.
which was free
it doesn’t mean much that 1,300 students with nothing better to do walked into Todd Hall when they were already up there for class.
Agreed
This game has more to do with casual fans that don’t make trips to Pullman then the hardcore fans and students that show up to home games. As a student it is hard to clear the time to go all the way to Seattle on a normal weekend. Along with it is more expensive for some of us then going to a game in Pullman. This requires those living close to pick up the attendance numbers.
The folks in Whatcom County...
even though we love coming to Pullman and Martin Stadium. It is nice heading to Seattle to watch our Cougs when we’re not playing the leg humpers. Casey Locker is from Ferndale so I’m sure a lot if folks who wouldn’t go to Pullman would make the trip to Seattle. Just saying. There are a lot of Cougs in Whatcom and Skagit Counties.

are you predicting low attendance at Martin Stadium or C-Link game?
The blood of "The Five" cries for justice.
neither
however, the high attendance for the Seattle game will have little to do with the Cougs.
Don't be so concerned with it this year
because if the game was played at Martin Stadium, Autzen Stadium, or C-Link Field, I don’t think the outcome would differ.
The blood of "The Five" cries for justice.
winning and losing isn't really my concern
selling a home game to a neutral site is worse than losing.
And it seems that the OSU game at CLink brought out the douchiest of WSU fans.
If they spewed hate towards Beaver fans, it’s going to be nasty with Oregon fans in town.

I have always liked the OSU fans the best. I was a douchy fan when OU came to town when I was in school. They bring it out in you. I’ve grown up a little since than.

i have not had a problem with a Duck fan at a game since the 90s
i think their fan jack-assery is a myth.
My last experience with them was in 2001.
So I’m readily willing to admit they’re not as douchey as they once were. I like the guys at ATQ a lot, too.
I'll bet we put no fewer than 30,000 in the seats for any game in Martin Stadium this season
The blood of "The Five" cries for justice.
it's a solid bet
your roadblocks would be EWU (especially if we lose to BYU) and UCLA (dad’s weekend should help).
I am not concered about the EWU game
It will be our first live look at our new team. Look at the numbers for our first home game this year, it was far better then the conference games. Everyone will be extremely excited and jacked up, plus the nice weather is the perfect time to see a football game. The tailgating lots are much fuller in September as well. I would predict we sell out for the EWU game.
Plus the sun dresses having flown south for the winter yet.
Nicer weather.

Spring game should be a good litmus test.
I think we should get a good gauge of the casual fan interest by how many people show up at Albi in Spokane this spring. My guess is that it is going to be huge.
I understand your position, but I'm not so sure.
We probably had 38-40k Coug fans in there last year, with 10-12k Beavs. I could see us bumping it up to 45k to 50k Coug fans, albeit with 17k-22k Ducks in there as well. If it doesn’t happen, I think that’s likely because such an awful taste was left in fans’ mouths from last year’s Seattle game (I’m not sure I’d attend the game if Wulff was coaching, and it’s weird to even type that I wouldn’t attend a local Coug football game). This isn’t to say that having the stands at least 1/3 full of Ducks is a good thing, but I doubt it will be 50/50.
Yes, you should follow another Coug-related account on Twitter: @425CougFan
I agree with this.
Leach will be good about drawing the “casual” fan to games. I’d put most west side Coug fans in the casual category, if anything because it is hard as hell to get over to Pullman for a game.
Wulff wasn’t going to draw the casual fan unless we were a Top 15 team which was going to happen about never.
duck fans travel exponentially better than beaver fans do
and Seattle Game Coug fans are notorious for buying their tickets to this travesty at the last minute.
I do predict that Coug fans will be turned away from this game because the Ducks bought their tickets.
I would agree
If this game was being played later in the season. Since it is towards the beginning and there is a new found excitement around the program i think that Cougs will buy up a good majority of the tickets earlier then expected.
i sincerely hope you're right
history says otherwise though
Yeah
It is a little optimistic, not saying we are going to have a staggering number of Cougs, but I think we see a solid amount of tickets sold to Cougs early on.
The reason the history shows otherwise is because we are relying on the casual fan, especially on a weekend where all the students are in Pullman.
In our history
we also haven’t had a coach that went to 10 straight bowl games and was a polarizing character to boot. We are also playing a good team. Good teams bring out more Cougar fans. I don’t think many people were getting psyched up about seeing Paul Wulff and the Beavs. I also think we will be 3-1 or 4-0 going into this game. The OSU game was the 8th week and we were 3-3 and just got blown out by Stanford and a heartbreaking loss to UCLA. I also think the weather on 9/29 (almost a month earlier) will be nicer and draw more people out. There a lot of different factors this next coming Seattle game. I think we will see more out of Cougar fans this year, just look at how people are donating now, that really indicates a difference.

I know everyone has an opinion on the Seattle game's attendance
But I’ll just say this one thing and leave it alone: BigWood is usually right about this kind of stuff.
Do you think OS had 30% of the crowd at this year's Seattle game?
Yes, you should follow another Coug-related account on Twitter: @425CougFan
Well, in that case ...
I think that’s high, but I was on the East side of the stadium looking at the West side, which looked to be about 95% crimson to me. The OS contingent to my left looked pretty big, but only about 8k, so I figured that the others scattered throughout the stadium probably comprised about half of that or less — hence, my estimate of about 10k to 12k total OS fans out of a crowd of almost 50k. I could have just misjudged it, but I was actually really surprised to see all of the crimson there.
In any case, if OS can comprise 30% of the crowd, I wouldn’t put it past UO fans to exceed that. No matter what, I agree that even 25% of the crowd in green and yellow is embarrassing.
Yes, you should follow another Coug-related account on Twitter: @425CougFan
If you thought they were 10-12k, then it really doesn't take much to get up to the 14-15k that would be 30 percent
Personally, I think 30% Oregon fans will be all right, as long as we can fill up the other 70%. If we have 47k and they have 20k, I’m OK with that. It will still feel like a home game.
Doesn’t change how I feel about the game in general, but I’d put that in the acceptable outcome range of something that sucks on its face.
The stands/atmosphere
is going to be VERY similar to a Seahawks game when the Cowboys come to town. You will have a majority of home fans in the crowd, with a large segment of louder, more passionate fans cheering on the visiting team.

those seahawks fans in the stands have been to games all year though
the fans for the Seattle Game don’t usually cheer, and when they do it has a 50/50 chance of being at the wrong time.
I disagree with the assessment that the opposing fans at Seahawks games are in any way louder or more passionate.
Seahawks fans yell on defense
Otherwise they are piss drunk and cussing away fans. That is not passion.

It was an honest question
I didn’t know if I was talking to a fellow season ticket holder or not. I’ve been a season ticket holder at various times throughout my life, and I’ve been to that number of games in the last four years alone. My experience does not jive with what you’re saying.

I agree. I think BigWood
is right about a lot of stuff, but we haven’t seen pandemonium in Cougar nation like this since probably the Rose Bowl. The donations are up and haven’t been like this in while and this comes from just the hiring of a new coach. WSU hasn’t ever been in these kind of waters before. I think there will be a different feel from this season that we haven’t experienced before. This can’t really be compared to the previous. Just look at what happened at TT and they didn’t have an AD like us or Larry Scott or Pac12 money.
CougCenter OG since 9/2/2008 | @TheSoCalCoug
i hope you're right
in my opinion, the Seattle Game placates to the worst parts of our fanbase (the apathetic and the douches), neither of which will carry a game. Hiring a new coach probably isn’t going to make these groups do a 180 overnight.
and for as excited as WSU fans might be, we’re sharing the stadium that day with a school that laps our excitement tenfold.
The apethetic and douches
are also the same fans that don’t go to Mariner games unless they are winning unless NYY or BoSox are in town. They are probably the same people who didn’t go to the Key to see the Sonics, because it wasn’t a nice enough facility and the Sonics sucked. Basically Fare-weather fans. I get what you are saying, but if we have a good record and a good, exciting team with national attention (Oregon) coming in and a new exciting offense these douches will show up.

No.
Home games are in a season ticket package. Home games include the amenities that come with home games. Home games typically don’t make the “home” team travel further than the “away” team.
The Seattle game is none of those. It is a neutral site game. At best.

nobody's disputing the idea there should be a Seattle game
they’re disputing the idea that THIS GAME should be the Seattle game.
there should not be a Seattle game
Our alumni base should not be so apathetic, and should be willing to open their wallets. After the 98, 01, 02, & 03 seasons, the program should be such that it appeals to a decent portion of the eastern Washington / northern Idaho populace to put a few thousand butts in seats to fill whatever the students and alums don’t…given we are only talking about a 35,117 seat stadium. The college football experience is best when it is on campus.
So, I guess I’m the guy disputing the idea there should be a Seattle game.

well the idea means we can talk about it
doesn’t mean i want to do it.
but selling a home game for Oregon should’ve been out of the question from the beginning.
I agree that we will have a better attendance then this past year
However, I still view it as an Away game. The atmosphere in Pullman for a home game can not be replicated. I didn’t attend the game this year (I was at all home games in Pullman) and i am not sure i will be making the trip next year. I actually think if anything the game should be played against the bigger named OOC teams, which would draw more of their fans since they can fly directly in to Seattle.
I do agree that the Seattle game for a conference team should be played on weekends that have students back home and our Pullman attendance is lower then the rest.

He runs more that Leach did,
but I’m wondering if with Mastro on board, he plans to run more.
Also, if you look at his last few years at Tech, it seems he started running more anyways. IIRC, Holgo was his “OC” then, too.

I think it was in the Seattle Times chat Leach said something about the pistol being here to stay. With Mastro being a pistol OG, I would expect to see it incorporated into Leach’s scheme.
by Mark Sandritter on Jan 5, 2012 11:54 AM PST up reply actions
I noticed that too, especially last year with OK State
But I think the sentiment about Leach bringing in a Pistol guy is accurate. We have ideal backs, I think, to run in Leach’s offense (smallish and quick). Still, I was very surprised at the ease with which WV passed last night. I say this realizing that Clemson always seems to lay gigantic eggs when in matters, which happened yet again. Even better, I think, was that Holgorsen had the offense humming in his first year at the helm. It did take at least half a season, though.
I'm here to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and I'm all out of bubble gum.
You Guys are looking at this all wrong!
You have to realize your new offense will execute in a precise manner! You will take what the Defense gives you. The only adaption I can see in DH is he breaks the huddle later; uses those goofy signs for play calling; and uses a little more motion pre-snap.
As far as attendence … you may have less due more games on National TV…
