Losses like this are not acceptable. This is already the second one this season. The Bone Era has been an enormous disappointment and filled with performance just like this one.

"If you want your dreams to come true, don't sleep in."

by kelly20210 on Jan 5, 2012 8:17 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

Sorry I stepped away to play basketball with my 3 yr old before he went to bed.

I know this is a game thread and emotion is allowed but people are calling for Bone’s job and saying all his recruits suck. I have been fire up in game threads so I am not a saint myself and I understand where you are coming from. All I am saying is slow down. Graham era basketball really sucked and sucked for a while. I was there with him and Eastman, it sucked. Also, yes Romar has a track record, but shouldn’t he consistently be putting winning teams together if he has a track record? This is college basketball, crap happens. Also, we won 20+ games last year. I also don’t think Klay, Casto or Motum become as good of players and they have under Saint Bennett as they have under Bone. Under Bennett KT wouldn’t be a 1st round pick. Bone’s first recruiting class is a scrap, he had to piece it together, his next one should have been better (but didn’t have a lot of room). It takes time in basketball to develop relationships with players and AAU coaches. From PSU he has had to move to a different caliber of recruits, so start new relationships. We don’t and can’t have a coach right now like Calipari or Huggins who will just bring in the recruits automatically. If Bone is still a dumpster fire in two years, then yes he is done. He has a good class next year and RWoolridge is coming in and I think he will put a fine class together the next year. I think next year will be fun.

by SoCalCoug on Jan 5, 2012 9:44 PM PST up reply actions

I understand the sentiment. I know Bone is probably staying here for a while.

However, the guy has met baseline expectations. The team has been respectable but rarely if ever exceeded expectations in any situation. Last year’s team could have made the tourney if they hadn’t laid eggs against Stanford, Oregon and ASU. Take care of business and they are in. I understand replacing Bennett’s guys is a chore and Tony didn’t exactly leave the roster to work for anybody but him. It’s not just poor on the floor performance it’s personnel decisions as well: bring in Aden, Thames transfer, clearly him and Casto had issues. Player development has two sides to the coin as well. Lodwick, Capers and Moore haven’t improved much in three years. I can’t figure out why Patrick Simon is still here. We aren’t using him, it doesn’t look like we plan on it either. It looks like he thought he could blend some of Tony’s recruits, Motum and Simon with his own guys and it hasn’t worked well. He had the chance to clean house in ‘09 and passed. There’s upside on this team but I feel like it is limited. Maybe he will turn it around but he’s running out of mulligans. I think we all knew this season would be rough, but there is a limit. Next year’s class, and team need to show something more than year’s 1-3.

by kelly20210 on Jan 6, 2012 12:20 AM PST up reply actions

You bring up some really good points.

I kind of feel the same way about this as I did about Paul Wulff. Being just a bad team is one thing and isn’t necessarily on the coach. Being inconsistent, however, I think is on the coach in many situations. That’s what’s been most frustrating for me. We’ve seen glimpses of what this team (and last years for that matter) can/could be. Then there’s stuff like tonight.

"Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them. And we shut them down because we can!" | Herb Brooks

by Coug999 on Jan 6, 2012 12:29 AM PST up reply actions

I think you made some real good points and agree.

Sometimes it is hard to clean house especially in basketball. I believe this happened with Utah and that is why Utah is where they are at. (Yes, they beat us, but they are really bad) Maybe if he cleaned house he would get more of a bye with the fans. I think you hit the head on the nail when you said he is trying to blend with Tony’s recruits.
I think he has developed players (e.g.-KT, Casto, Motum, Enquist) and then some players have ceilings or aren’t willing to listen. I think Lodwick is way better than he was when he first arrived, but he is a limited player. I don’t know what to say about Reggie, he has trained a lot with Aaron Brooks (his cousin) and still seems like the same player. Capers hasn’t changed much, if he hasn’t improved his jump shot by now, nothing can fix that. Have you noticed D.J. Shelton’s free throw shooting? It is much improved, completely different stance and motion, and he is much better at the line.
I wasn’t worried about Thames leaving, I think that was more of him being a Bennett recruit, but on the flip side RWoolridge is coming in and Ladd wanted to come here (yes, I know Ladd is just okay, but he wanted to play for Bone). Now the Simon thing, who knows. I am confused by this one. I think it is a matter that he was highly touted early and was 6’8" with a good shot, so you don’t want to pass on that. I think Bone gave him another year to see, but now it is evident he can’t play at this level.
I will be interested to see how next year pans out, because as Nuss always says in college basketball it is really the talent level of the players who make the difference. Players make plays. I will be frustrated is he redshirts any of those players, because in college basketball you should be ready to play as a freshman, if you are not, you probably never will be. Don’t recruit someone who is going to redshirt, you are just wasting everyone’s time.
I am having a wait and see attitude with Bone, because I think he is a really good coach on the floor, but I wonder about him getting talent (although next year class is his best) and having people who follow his coaching in actual games. Some players listen in practice and in the huddle, but then can’t perform come game time. When the players do listen and follow there have seen some really good plays on the court. I can remember many good offensive sets coming out of time outs and then plays that clearly were not followed.
I think Bone is more frustrated than us. I am trying to figure out if the failed execution is on Bone or the players. I know when I coached you can tell kids exactly what to do, but it is another thing for them to do it or have the ability to do it.
Sometimes for coaches coming into a new school it is a timing thing and getting the right blend of players and all of that. He is having trouble getting the program going in the direction he wants. I think a majority of coaches would have a difficult time following Bennett. It is like going from the wishbone to the airraid. I guess that is why I am giving his some time. The one thing I hope people stop doing is thinking about where we would be at with Saint Bennett here. There is a possibility he could have been worse during this stretch. I think the two years after this year will be the true measuring stick. (Although sometimes I have this sneaky suspicion that Ernie Kent is waiting in the wings)

I like this discussion a lot. Perhaps we should make a permanent:

State of Cougar Basketball FP for the season. Anyway I understand where you are coming from. I know we have to wait and see, and I do want to see him with next year’s group. What I didn’t articulate last night in my frustration, with my, “time to talk about firing Bone comment”, is that it was more directed at this being the first signs that maybe he isn’t the guy. I think that’s a thought a lot of people including myself are having for the first time. It’s like when we got blownout to start the 2010 football season in Stillwater. I wasn’t expecting a miracle, I just wanted to be competitive and it wasn’t even close. I still thought Wulff could be the guy, but I wasn’t sure anymore, this is where I currently am with Bone. I hope I’m wrong, because that means winning! And everyone loves that! Also Ernie Kent, oh man, that would be…. something?

Ya I understand the Wulff to Bone feeling

but basketball is much different than football. People lose to bad teams in college basketball all the time. This year, UW-Dakota, Arizona-SPU, UCLA-LM, KU-Davidson, GT-Mercer, Florida-Rutgers, etc. I get what you are saying with Wulff being blown out by OSU, but I don’t get that feeling with the basketball team. It is just a different situation and basketball rosters to football rosters is different. I think Bone is managing a very bad basketball team. Coaches make mistakes and have regrets, I bet Aden is one of them. He has had a lot of scholarship issues, trying to fill holes, players issues, bad talent, just a lot of crap to get through. I think/hope next year will be the first time he is able to get through that. Next year won’t be a awesome year, but at least we will see the possible future. I hope Longrus becomes that DEFENSIVE STOPPER we need (poor man’s Bobby Jones).

it felt that way

final 3 possessions that counted Brock did not even touch the ball….Capers 3 from the corner, Reggie elbow fader with a guy on him, reggie missed lay up.

brock could have had 30 if we’d just have kept feeding him. instead we had aden running around like it was a pick up game at the rec.

rotations were all over the place. and as is becoming the norm, we showed no heart coming out against a team that many our calling the worst since the first bush was in office.

First two possessions of overtime were easy lay ups for Motum

I really didn’t see much evidence that we couldn’t have done that all night. It’s not as if they were playing tough D. I will even concede that Chiggy & Washbourn had great games on offense. We still should have torched them with drives to the basket. There was never a sense of purpose. It really did look like a pickup game much of the time. Long strings of no top 25 teams that has never been seen before.

Last year things were ok but the year before…horrible. Same with this year.

Hell, Bennett’s year Stanford was #1 for most of the year and got a 1 seed. I may be blurring years but Oregon had some pretty good teams over that period, same with AZ, same with UW.

The point is more that we are not going to be facing the Lopez twins, harden, brockman, oj mayo, like 9 nba guys from ucla, aaron brooks, on and on and on…..we are facing Chiggy and he is busting us down. We are facing Oregon’s team with no NBA guys, maybe no NBDL guys and they are beating us by 20. Just frustrated as I’m sure everyone is.
