HOT COUGAR ACTION: And The Streak Continues.
The home losing streak to UCLA is now at 19. Similar to last year, WSU lead for a large portion of the game, but UCLA came charging late and the Cougars couldn't hold on. Turnovers and missed shots late ultimately cost WSU, just as Craig pointed out in his recap yesterday. One thing that stands out to me in the official stats is the second half free throw disparity. WSU shot two free throws in the second half while UCLA shot 16, ouch.
UCLA's women's basketball team made it a clean sweep, beating WSU 73-52. The WSU women's team has now lost seven of their last eight games after a promising 3-0 start in conference play.

Lived in Tri-Cities last year.
Half the people in my office had some sort of affiliation with WSU yet I think there was only 1 or 2 other people who actually made it to any games.
There’s people with WSU stuff everywhere there, I was turned away 30 minutes before the opening pitch for the baseball game against UW. It’s an easier drive than Spokane even though it’s a little longer since half of it is on 395 (4 lanes, easy to go 75-80).
There’s enthusiasm for the Cougs, and plenty of people with enough money to make some trips, but how can you get them to Pullman?
Coming from someone who lives in the TC and attended all the home games last year
Getting people from the TC to Pullman has to do with the product on the field and their opinion of the team. The perspective of the football program was changed with the Mike Leach hire. While I was not able to attend Night With Cougar Football I talked to a lot of people who attended and someone from almost every table there including Mike Leach’s (Everyone ended up at the Pub after the event). Most of the people I talked to have season tickets but did not make the trips to every home game because of how they felt the state of the program was. They also noted that they are renewing their season tickets and hope to add more seats to their section because of the amount of people that now want to go to games. Last year it was way to easy to find someone that had season tickets and was just giving them away to anyone that wanted to go. I know it won’t be the case this upcoming season because the casual fans have already been asking to use our extra season tickets for games.

I feel like Tri Cities is the great untapped market for WSU
Moos is convinced, though, that Spokane has to become WSU’s large-city base on the east side. It’s his pet project.
I agree
I was disappointed that WSU has not brought the basketball back to this area like they did in 2009. They had a great showing and mny of them were not avid Cougars. I was very surprised had how many people showed up especially for a non conference game against Portland St. There is want for basketball and baseball here (I also tried to get into the WSU vs UW game last year but didn’t think it would be a problem to get in, but they sold out over a half hour before the start of the game). Almost everyone here associates themselves with WSU since it is the nearest college. The WSU alumni association in TC did start chartering busses up to games last season and had a good showing, I think if you could put together a package deal through the athletic department you could pull a lot more people up to the games from TC.

I believe the reason they haven't been back in basketball is simply scheduling
Seattle is a priority, Spokane is a priority, and when you mix in the holiday tournaments they’ve been playing in, there’s just not really an opportunity to play another “home” game away from Pullman.
It's funny you should say this, because I'm watching MSU-Michigan right now and was just thinking about how awesome this arena is.
It’s not apples to apples obviously since Pullman is so isolated, but everyone in this game is super engaged. We, on the other hand, can’t even fill a student section. But I think you hit it on the head perfectly:
There’s enthusiasm for the Cougs, and plenty of people with enough money to make some trips, but how can you get them to Pullman?I think the problem is that there really isn’t enthusiasm right now. Not sure what it was like when we were going to the tournament, but I think the fact that we can hardly draw over 5000 people for a non UW game when there’s about 18000 people at this school and around 25000 overall in the city is kind of sad.

Can't we do both?
The problem with Spokane is that while there is a contingent of Cougs there, the focus is on the Zags and the Zags only (unfortunately, there are some Coug alumni that are better supporters of Zag basketball than Coug basketball in Spokane). The football market there is open if we have a consistent (read 5+ years) winning team.
Spokane is not a great sports town unless you are winning 90% of your games for a decade. Even during both Rose Bowl runs, Spokane was apathetic. Both Spokane and the Tri Cities should be filled with Coug billboards and advertisements to maximize the support from both areas. There should be an emphasis on both.
I was about to say something similar.
I feel like if Spokane was willing to be that city that consistently fills your seats (in the same way that Portland is to UO and OSU), then we would have seen it by now. Maybe next year will prove me wrong. I guess I’m just a little skeptical and feel like his efforts would be better served spread over a larger area (Spokane, TC, Seattle, even Portland from a donations perspective).

Or even students for that matter.
For pete’s sake we were playing UCLA and couldn’t even fill the section.

I believe the excitement of one sport carries over to other sports
And it starts with football, honestly. However, it’s not helping that this team plays a brand of basketball that’s just not very easy on the eyes. They don’t give you much to cheer about most of the time.
Totally agree.
I think it’s the same thing that I thought about football. The program needed excitement more than anything, and, while it’s a bummer, that excitement had to come at the expense of Paul Wulff.

But that doesn't change the fact that I think we should be able to draw 4k-5k students on a Saturday afternoon.

I've never understood the idea that it's not worth it to go to a game
But I was a huge sports fan, so whatever. I mean, I went no matter what during the worst of the Kevin Eastman years.
Agreed.
Especially when 1) You don’t have to pay if you have a sports pass (which most people do) 2) It ain’t that hard to round up 5 or 6 friends to go with you and 3) what else are you going to do at 2 on a Saturday?

Snowboard/Ski?
Go to Spokane?
Go home?
Be hungover?
Worry about the Zags instead?

And I guess one more thing:
Giveaways are something that I think our AD could do a lot better job of. You see these games on ESPN where everyone is wearing the same shirt. For us, it goes to the first 200 people, meaning there isn’t a whole lot of incentive for the 201st person to show up.

They're already giving you a free ticket ...
And before you say “but I PAID for the sports pass!” do the math on the number of football games it gets you into, how much each of those games would cost you if you just bought a student section ticket each Saturday, and see how it compares to the overall cost of the sports pass.
Completely aware of that.
Students are watching for (at least) free. But I guess I’m saying that there is a difference between having the ticket and actually going to the stadium.

Neither will I.

The students don't understand how lucky
they are to be able to get into every home game for free. Other schools charge students for each game. Some even require you to put your name in a raffle where you MAY get a ticket you have to buy. Imagine not getting to go to The Apple Cup because you didn’t get picked in the STUDENT RAFFLE!
Then again, if all of our teams start winning consistently the students will show.
If we get a game on ESPN they'll do some sort of massive giveaway.
They gave out thousands of shirts for a grey out the other year. There was flags everywhere for a football game.
But, if getting a free shirt or random giveaway is what it takes to get people to a game something else needs to be done.
I've learned that WSU has event fans, not sports fans.
Half a dozen people I know that went to WSU with from 2001-2006 have seen been to a couple games since school ended, the ND game in San Antonio and the OSU game in Stillwater.
Moos is changing the culture but it is going to take a while.
Who else laughed their head off when tonight's episode of American Dad had a bear fighting a shark?!
Is there really any doubt?

Seth McFarlane must be a Cougar fan and didn't want to upset the masses because he diverted the storyline and left it an unresolved conflict.

Either that or he realized how obvious it was the bear would win so he saw no reason to show the obvious.

I still have no idea how you think a bear could win in 4 feet of water
The bear would either be swimming or nearly immobile standing on it’s hind legs. On top of that, there is no way there bear could swing through the water with enough force to actually inflict damage upon the shark. Make the fight in shallower water and I will happily concede that the bear has a chance, but in 4 feet it isn’t even a fair fight.
