HOT COUGAR ACTION: An Idiot And An Arrest
It was a busy night on the blog Monday with the news of C.J. Mizell's arrest and Jeff's post on Ryan Leaf calling Mike Riley an idiot. Frankly, I'm disappointed Leaf called Riley an idiot. If he had chosen another word, I would have had a sweet alliteration in the title. More people need to think of the link post writers when they call people names.
Also, if you are going to call someone a name, make it unique. Being called an idiot isn't cool, Jim Walden called all Cougar fans, Bill Moos and Elson Floyd idiots. If you are going to call someone an idiot you should at least do it on Twitter so people can post it later.

An article that Jeff wrote for the Evergreen.
Don’t remember exactly what it was about. I want to say Klay Thompson being arrested but I’m not sure.

Here's the article
I would post a link to the DE website, but they seem to have purged everything from last year. I saved everything on my harddrive.

Notice how there is zero mention of the name “Marcus Capers” in the entire article.

I pretty much feel the same
He wants to show that he is an entirely different person than the inmature self that he was then. Then he basically comes back into the spotlight, a little, and has to go and air some 13-14 year old grievance he had with an old coach. Sometimes I have to wonder if he is more sorry for losing his place in the spotlight than he is for the mistakes he made in the past. I am grateful for what he did for WSU in that Rose Bowl season, but he has not been a very good icon for the school. It’s not like we can brag to prospective QBs coming to the university that this is where Ryan Leaf paved his way to the pros.

You two are really going to make that sweeping of a conclusion based off one small quote?
Given everything else he’s done and said in the last year? You’re as bad as Miller.

That's exactly what I said.
Of the thousands of words written and spoken this year, we’re really going to attack him for five?

You should really be able to see through your subjective bias
I am not trying to sound condemning, but for somebody who is in the midst of apologizing and fessing up to things, he doesn’t seem very forgiving himself. Maybe he is being sincere, but let’s weigh Ryan Leaf’s options at this point in his life. He could coach amateur sports,he could try to revive his celebrity by writing books and being “honest”, or he could…………………… Ryan Leaf is not doing anybody in the world any favors by coming forward with his stories and books except himself. Every fallen from grace athlete tries to in someway or another (e.g. Pete Rose “Yeah, I bet.”) It’s about all you have left to do when you become irrelevant (except on all time bust lists). Nobody else in the sports world is really buying in to this or interested in Ryan has to say except a few thousand people, most of whom will be converging on Martin Stadium on September 8. Ryan is a legendary Coug and I wish him the best with his life and endeavors. But I think that the rest of the world doesn’t see the world through crimson and gray colored we do and sees it as a facade. You’re seeing him more like a family member than an objective other.
Around these parts, a man could get hurt for wearing purple.
I think there's a flip side to this though, too.
You could make the argument that the rest of the world is willing to ignore all the good and is just waiting for him to screw up again.

I think that if he is insincere, the old Ryan will surface again
Let’s hope not.
Around these parts, a man could get hurt for wearing purple.
It was a dumb mistake
But he is long past the days of getting interviewed by Jeff for The Evergreen. He should be pretty savy in his dealings with the media by now.
Around these parts, a man could get hurt for wearing purple.
And I would argue that 99 percent of the evidence in the last year points to that
To discard it all for one dumb comment seems silly to me.
Perhaps you are not aware that he treated me -- personally -- like shit when I covered the team as a reporter.
Believe me, I’m one of many people that could continue to hold a grudge if I wanted to. I have also approached all of this — for the last year — with the appropriate amount of skepticism. Because of my previous experiences, I really, really wanted to make sure I vetted him before I said, “Hey, I actually think this guy has changed.”
You are correct that I’ve followed this situation closer than most. But I think that gives me a more accurate view of the big picture, not a myopic one.
I am not rooting against him
But when change is somebody’s last option, then always be a bit skeptical.
By the way, I’d pay money for an encounter of you and Ryan Leaf to surface on to You Tube.
Around these parts, a man could get hurt for wearing purple.
I was too chicken to confront him the way my esteemed colleagues sometimes did
He is a big dude. That wouldn’t be the case nowadays, but I was pretty green back then.
It was Mike Sando.
And he handled him as you would expect — as a professional who refused to be bullied.
He is trying to change. It doesn't happen in one year.
People can slip up, doesn’t mean that they are still that person.

Wake up Jeff
I get paid to talk to the media everyday. It’s takes about two seconds to know how to avoid language that will obscure your POV because it only stirs controversy. That’s the grow up part.
Of course, maybe he’s playing the PT Barnum card to keep his name is the news…
If Vegas published odds on the first Courar arrested
My guess is Mizell’s odds on the money line would’ve been -1000
As for Leaf and Miller, it’s clear that Leaf should’ve chosen his words more wisely, but Miller’s post was misguided to say the least. The part that got me was when he tried to demean Leaf for trying to sell a book. Uh, Ted? That’s what everyone who has ever written a book does. Apparently Leaf is supposed to hole up in a shack and hope people trip over his book at the store.

Ya I agree. Don't you think Ted was trying to create more readership with a article like that?
Ted is doing the same thing Leaf is. Leaf is trying to sell a book and Miller is trying to sell as well. There is no reason Miller needed to write that. He wasn’t involved with this and he wrote his article is based off something he read. I believe if Leaf said this to him in a interview he would have understood where Leaf was coming from. We all use the wrong nouns/descriptions all the time. People call people douche bags all the time when they really aren’t douche bags. When you are frustrated you don’t always use the correct word choices. What was Leaf suppose to say? "Frankly Riley was a coach that I didn’t see eye-to-eye with, he was way over his head, he wasn’t qualified to be an NFL coach, he didn’t handle himself in a professional manner, he played favorites, he didn’t like me in the first place, I thought the other coaches were more knowledgeable, etc?" Instead he just said "idiot." He probably could have said it differently, but when are frustrated the correct words don’t always come out. Leaf has owned up to it and apologized. I would be surprised if Leaf eventually contacted Riley and apologized. It is part of recovery.

Interesting take by Grippi today
He wrote that he knows for a fact that CJ would not have been on the team if the former staff had been retained. That’s not surprising to me at all. I thought his days were numbered even before that, given his seeming lack of effort in previous games. Any guy who refuses to go into the game will likely lose any credibility he has with coaches and teammates. I’ve got no problem with the new staff giving everyone a clean slate, as I’m sure they know that malcontents and others who are not on-board will show their true colors sooner rather than later. I really hope CJ can straighten up, buy in, and contribute. I don’t think that’s how this story will end, though.
I'm here to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and I'm all out of bubble gum.
My block quote isn't working but it sounds like there were other issues. Too bad.
Academic issues and several days late returning for start of classes.
How does that work scholarship wise?
Assuming everything is paid for at the beginning of the semester, are they allowed to stay to the end of the semester or do they have to leave campus immediately?

I know that.
It was more a question if expenses are covered for the semester, or do they revoke the scholly.
So I guess this is probably appropriate today given the circumstances.
Anyone know what’s going on with Louis Bland? Is he going to be ready next season?

Eh, it's different with him
You’re talking about a player who has been absent from the program for two years now. And in that absence, he’s been arrested for weed and domestic violence. Both of those are “third rails” for Leach, as Vince would say.
And when he was with the program on the field, he wasn’t exactly a model player.
Sounds reasonable.
I just remember talking about him being arrested under what seemed to be odd circumstances but then nothing since then.

I hate to see all of this because I know Louis personally
I talked to him a while back and he is still in football activities and hoping to play. My experiences with him do not reflect a person prone towards violence.

Maybe he's changed
But when he was with the program, he had a lot of the same practice habits Mizell had.
He is still around with the team
I hope things work out for him as a person. He is a really intellegent, respectful man. Of all the players on the team I have known, he has probably been my favorite.

True, I doubt he is back

I wish I had a dollar
for every time I read words to this effect on the various Coug Blogs: " Wulff’s an idiot, why doesn’t he play Mizell more?". I believe they tried very hard with him and couldn’t get through. Some guys can’t get outside their own head and gain perspective… Miz certainly fit that model.
Miz never seemed to understood, nor appreciate the opportunity that staff gave him and the gamble they took bringing him into WSU. He pouted, acted entitled, eventually earned the job, shined a little, got benched, fought back, won the job, had a few big plays, blew pass coverages like clockwork, pouted, got benched, refused to go in the game- repeat-repeat-repeat. It is a shame.
He frustrated his coaches and teammates with regularity and was given chance after chance after chance to utilize his talents. He made decisions not to do so with the same regularity.
Leaf had that bugaboo too, couldn’t escape his own head. But his on field performance due to Price’s ability to reach him, helped him achieve staggering on field success. CJ never understod that repsect is earned. It is one thing to play with a chip on your shoulder, it is quite another to live with a chip on your shoulder. Too bad— this guy would have ROCKED a 3-4 defense on the interior.

Mizell had no business playing pass coverage. That wasn’t where his talent was.

there is nothing unfair about asking a LB to handle pass coverage. Zone blitzes and ghost reads are basic nuances of all defensive sets- it comes with the territory.

So in baseball terms for Mizell
I think with Wulff, this would have been strike three. With Leach, I think he just barely fouled off strike two.
Around these parts, a man could get hurt for wearing purple.
So is Grippi
After all, there have been some on-field incidents with the former coaching staff – if Paul Wulff had been retained for a fifth year, I know for a fact Mizell would no longer be a member of the team after pulling himself out of last year’s Apple Cup – and now an off-field problem,

I respect Ryan Leaf, and his progress, enough to say that his comment showed his immaturity.
While he has come a long way, Ryan Leaf has chosen to be in the public eye, and while on that platform made bad choice of words the revealed a bit that he still has a ways to go. It’s nothing like ‘96 Ryan Leaf , he has come a long way! If it was the old Ryan Leaf or someone like that calling an ex-coach an idiot publicly, I would have brushed it off. That is just Leaf spouting off again. But because he has made so much progress, I say: That was stupid and showed your immaturity. Maturity doesn’t call people who are in over their heads an “Idiot”. I get that is not quite what you meant, and that it was a mistake. But I hope you will get to the maturity level to not make that kind of mistake anymore. That is what I would say to a good friend in the same position whom I respect, not the moronic punk kid I have come to expect this crap from.
See, but this is different than what Miller wrote
Instead, he went off on a tangent, insulted Leaf’s intelligence and said it was just a ploy to drum up publicity for a book. So instead of just pointing out he slipped and it was a sign of immaturity creeping back in, he essentially did to Leaf what Leaf did to Riley.
Point taken, but that comment was really in no way trying to defend Ted Miller's article.
The backdrop of my thought process was more of the previous conversation in this thread, thought not a response to it, rather than Miller’s article. Absolutely: Miller pulled the same immaturity Leaf did, and should be called on it as well. However Leaf is a Coug, he is family, and for that reason he falls far more into “good friend I respect” category than a talking head on ESPN, a station from which I have come to expect inanity (although much less from Miller than most…).
I have zero problem with what Miller did
Leaf is to a point in his life where he should and does know better.
Maybe he slipped, but it doesn’t matter. His track record does.

I disagree-
That is far too simplistic for Leaf’s complicated journey. His ‘track record’ wouldn’t indicate an immediate follow up in a tweet wherein he admits to a poor choice of words regarding Riley, and even goes so far as to say that he perhaps should have said something different. Clearly it is a far bigger deal to Miller to roast Leaf, than the comments were to Ryan. By the ‘track record’ I assume you mean him blowing a fuse in the locker room at the reporter and shouting from the roof tops about ‘buying and selling you all’ in Pullman… among otehr immature moves he made over a decade ago. All of which he has owned up to and with MUCH regret I might add. The drug addiction. His book is a ‘look what I did, don’t go on that path’ saga— and all the silliness about him wanting to sell more books is a bit of a ‘no duh’- you write them to sell them.
What gets ignored (beside the follow up tweet), is the ‘new track record’. He is a recovering addict. Quite public about it and donates much of his time and energy to youth and athlete education in this regard. Also, ignored his recent bouts with brain tumor surgery and the very non public trips to the wards for the kids and adults afflicted in the hospital. His open critque of the recruiting process and his honesty in that regard when SI once again lept on his college career as a storyline for another negative veinin which to mine. His care for the beleagured Mike Price following the very public Alabama debacle, when Leaf housed Price and his wife in his CD’A cabin and helped a good man, sorely wounded by the public disgrace. Of course, the non public settlement of libel issues in the millions of dollars, lacked the headline coverage by SI that the "bama story held. Never mind that it is proof of lies in print. Price singled Leaf out for his emotional assistance when he took the UTEP job…
Yep, the guy is in the spotlight, and yep he said a dumb thing. But why is the fact that he immediately admitted it not part of the story? Well then there is no ‘story’ on which to base misplaced moral outrage right? Look at the whole of the life… he fully admits to being far from perfect… he is clearly trying a better path.
If you can't Go Cougs... don't go.
