Another Look At Mike Leach's Coaching Staff
While some college coaching staffs have received a lot of attention recently, Mike Leach put together his staff in relative anonymity. There was some buzz about defensive coordinator, but a lot of what has been written about Leach's staff has been written by our own Brian Floyd. On a national media level, Leach's staff hires have barely drawn a mention. That changed a bit today as CoachingSearch.com, who broke the Jason Loscalzo as strength coach news, took a look at Leach's staff.
One part in particular stood out to me.
The defensive side of the ball, however, is a little bit different. Leach has never coached together with any of the four assistants including defensive coordinator Mike Breske.
I don't know why I never realized that before, I'm assuming I just never looked at the staff broken up into offense and defense. As they add in the video below, none of the four defensive coaches have ever worked together. I don't know how important, if at all, coaching familiarity is, but this is an interesting experiment. If it turns out none of the defensive coaches get along and they brawl on the sidelines, my money is on Joe Salave'a.

I know
WSU has not had any recognition in a while, but I can’t take anything in that article or video seriously. First, I thought it was a typo, then I saw it again… The guy spelled Wulff’s name “Wuulf.”
Haven't worked together, but they have a connection in one way or another. Except one
Salave’a → Emerick
Choate → Russell
Volero → Leach
Breske → Nada, far as I can tell.

Also Leach took a trip to Hawaii with Breske
So I think that means they’re soulmates now, or something.

I think the Pac 12 Washingon network should have a reality TV show
and it will feature all the defensive coaches who live in a house together. They don’t quite know each other yet. It’s the true story, of when defensive position coaches stop being polite and start gettin’ real.

Speaking of reality tv...
Anyone hear anything new about the supposed HBO show on Leach?

If they did get into a fight on the sidelines,
who else would want to see Salave’a use the railings in Martin to give the people’s elbow?

Tight ends usually end up divided into other groups.
Generally the tight ends will spend significant time training with the O-line group, doing their drills, etc. For plenty of TEs in the college game, blocking assignments will make up the vast majority of the time they see in games, so this makes sense.
The pass catching aspect of the tight end position is what grabs peoples attention, but proportionally is a minor part of what most schemes demand from the position. Obviously there are outliers, but they are indeed quite rare. Occasionally they see time with receivers coaches, but they aren’t going to be running routes all practice.
With the distinction of having ‘Inside’ and ‘Outside’ receivers coaches in Mike Leach’s system, it will be interesting to see where the organization’s tight ends lineup in positional drills. I assume they’ll spend the majority of time with Clay MaGuire, while switching over to Eric Morris on occasion.
Thizz or die.
