The MLB draft kicks off today with the first round and supplemental round scheduled for day one. As many as a dozen WSU players and recruits could be selected during the three day draft. First day action will cover the first 60 picks and begin at 4 p.m. PT.
Mitch Gueller is the only WSU affiliated player likely to be selected today. He's been rising up draft boards lately and has been connected to the Yankees at No. 30 and the Phillies at pick No. 40. The higher Gueller is selected, the less likely he is to make it to Pullman. Not that we don't want him to be selected high, I would just prefer it's by a team lacking deep pockets. The Twins at No. 32 would be an ideal selection. They will already have to pay a massive bonus to the No. 2 pick, so if Gueller holds out for above slot they may not have room in the budget.
For more on Gueller, you can check out this post from last week. If you are interested in following the MLB draft, you can stream it on MLB.com or follow the draft tracker here. Tomorrow, rounds 2-15 will go off the board with rounds 16-40 scheduled for Wednesday. Taylor Ard and Derek Jones are among the WSU players likely to be selected.
