I always here this "we will never recruit like UW or other places." Do you think that will be true forever? I am curious.
Can we ever be competitive (recruiting wise) with UW? This is just a question of theory. Get ready for the run-on question.
How if Leach stays here 5-10 years, builds a powerhouse (7 bowls in that time, top 25 in 7 years), Leach dominates Sark in Apple Cups, that new nice hotel gets built on campus, maybe another nice hotel gets built in town, the campus expands a lot (like in the future plans) and we add more to the student population along with more majors, the town grows 5-10k or more, more business come to the Palouse due lower operating costs, more direct flights are added, better transportation is provided from Spokane, we have a national presence and keep that great small town school feel which provides good sports, communications, research, engineering, vet school, etc.? We add more facilities, former athletes that go pro come back to work out in the summer (like at the big schools) because WSU facilities are nice (we get more bang for our buck construction wise and land wise in the Palouse), they can stay more focused in Pullman and the area grows making it more inviting to stay. Moscow and University of Idaho grows as well, making the Palouse larger. A Five Guys, Jersey Mikes, In-and-Out burger, Cheesecake factory, Ram bar and grill and Hooters gets added (O ya, don't forget BWW). Maybe even a Costco makes it to Pullman or Moscow (I love their pizza, soda, dogs and frozen yogert) and Costco can now sell alcohol. Here comes Kirkland Vodka! (Trust me having Costco here in CA with a abundant amount alcohol choices is a great thing) Between the two schools the student population is 50k+ and between the two towns the population it goes from 50,000 to maybe a 75-80,000 or maybe even 100,000.
Eugene has 150,000 people and two larger cities that are over an hour away (Salem at a 1hr & 150,000 people and Portland at 2 hrs with 500,000). Just something to think about. I know we are not Oregon, but a few schools have come out of no where and developed a national presence. Yes, I know we don't have Nike. Hey maybe Paul Allen will eventually get involved.
Texas Tech became relevant for a while, people even talked about their basketball for a season or two because of Bobby Knight. TCU and BSU have never recruited like UW, but previously neither were in a major conference. I would also throw West Virginia in this mix. Morgantown is a similar to Pullman , they are a town of 30,000 and WV has an enrollment of 29,000 (but they don't have another university next to them). They might even be more remote than Pullman, the next largest city that has 50k+ people is Pittsburgh, which is an hour and a half away. The thing I think we have above TCU, BSU, WV is that we are in a solid conference, good AD and president and I think those schools might have trouble with their new conferences. The only change that made sense for those 3 schools is TCU because of their location. So there may be a glimmer that something can change. We have never seen a long time of great success in Pullman and maybe Leach and Moos and a their successors can do it and if we get that who knows what could happen? Or nothing changes at all and we keep saying WE CANT RECRUIT WITH UW AND NEVER WILL.
(Also, hopefully E-Flo stays around for a while. I think other universities are going to want him.)
