Apple Cup 2013 halftime update: Cougars up 10-3 at halftime

Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports

A touchdown near the end of the first half was enough to put WSU in the lead at halftime of the Apple Cup.

After struggling to pick up even a first down on their first six possessions, the WSU offense was able to find some success near the end of the first half and the Cougars lead the Huskies 10-3 at halfitme of the 2013 Apple Cup.

The Cougars gained just 53 yards on their first six drives. The game was tied 3-3 thanks in large part to excellent field position following a turnover. Then, the Cougars began to mix in some successful runs and things began to open up for Connor Halliday and the passing game. Halliday led the Cougars on a 91-yard touchdown drive, hitting Rickey Galvin for a 14-yard score.

WSU's defense quickly got off the field on the subsequent possession, giving the ball back to Halliday and the offense. Halliday picked up where he left off and found some quick success. WSU appeared to be in position to add at least three points at the end of the half, but a block in the back call stalled the drive. Halliday was unable to find anything quick to set up a possible field goal try and the first half came to an end.

Washington picked up 54 yards on its first possession, but gained just 90 yards during the rest of the half. WSU was able to force a pair of turnovers, to help limit the Huskies to three points.

Washington State will receive the second half kickoff with a chance to add to its lead.
