WSU football recruiting: 2014 CB Joseph Turner commits to Mike Leach's staff

The average height of the WSU secondary should get a lift in 2014. - James Snook-US PRESSWIRE

Mike Breske's secondary got a little bit bigger this weekend with Washington State's latest commit.

Cornerback Joseph Turner of San Mateo, Calif.'s College of San Mateo committed to Mike Leach and Washington State on Friday, according to Britton Ransford of Wazzu Watch. Turner chose WSU over reported offers from Hawaii and Utah State. He becomes the Cougs' ninth commitment of the 2014 recruiting class.

Rivals gives Turner a 3-star rating and credits running backs coach Jim Mastro as the primary recruiter. Scout pegs Turner as a 2-star, and he is not rated by 247 Sports or ESPN.

Fans of big cornerbacks have to like where the WSU coaching staff is headed.. Turner is listed at 6'2, 190 by Rivals and Scout, making him the second corner over six feet in the 2014 recruiting class (Kevin Griffin was the first at 6'1).

Turner has some speed to go with that height, running a reported 4.4 in the 40-yard dash. That may be an exaggeration, but he still looks the part in his Hudl highlights.

The physical attributes are impressive, but Turner will still have to learn how to cover Pac-12 receivers. If he could already do that, then he'd probably have more stars next to his name and offers from other major-conference schools.

WSU Defensive coordinator Mike Breske should have Turner on campus for 2014 spring football. He is expected to graduate from San Mateo College in December. Wazzu Watch adds that his redshirt season is still intact, and he has three years to play two.

Another interesting tidbit from WW: San Mateo is becoming a recruiting hotbed for WSU. Turner joins Devonte McLain, Lyman Faoliu, and Justin Sagote as recent Cougar commits from the California city.
