Deone Bucannon turns in fantastic day at the NFL Combine

Pat Lovell-USA TODAY Sports

The former WSU safety made a pretty strong case to be a second day drat pick at this May's NFL Draft.

The NFL Combine is where collegiate players go to impress the coaches and general managers from all 32 NFL franchises, trying to convince said team executives to ask them to the prom, er, pick them in the NFL Draft. Players can see draft stock shoot up or down based on their performance in Indianapolis.

We already know what a great collegiate player and animal on the football field Deone Bucannon is. He spent Tuesday proving just how good he is to potential NFL suitors, turning in one of the best times in the 40-yard dash for safeties and was near the top of his position for many other events. From his combine page, some of his weaknesses, such as coverage issues and overaggressiveness are pretty spot on. This line though:

Average speed -- struggles to recover from missteps and will not track anyone down from behind.

Bucannon did a lot to dispute by turning in a 4.49 40-yard dash, tied for third best amongst safeties and faster than Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Calvin Pryor and Dion Bailey. Bucannon racked up 19 reps on the bench press (third best), a 36.5-inch vertical jump (third best), 125 inches on the broad jump (second best), 6.96 seconds on the three cone (third). Although he struggled by comparison in the 20-yard shuttle, it's not a stretch to say Bucannon outperformed a number of safeties whom NFL pundits and personnel probably thought more of coming in.

It'll still be hard for Bucannon to jump any higher on draft chart than his current location (probably between the third and fifth round) but he certainly made sure NFL GMs and coaches will be taking a much closer look.
