Defensive end Jalen Canty of St. Patrick-St. Vincent High School in Vallejo, Calif. made his commitment to Mike Leach and the Washington State football program official by sending in his letter of intent on Signing Day. Canty joins the 2014 recruiting class over offers from Oregon, Utah, Fresno State and San Jose State.

Oregon was a late player for Canty, tossing an offer his way the same weekend he made a trip to Pullman. That delayed his commitment, but eventually Canty did pledge to the Cougs.

Canty is given a 3-star composite rating and No. 64 composite ranking amond strong-side defensive ends from 247 Sports. That includes a 2-star rating from Rivals, whose evaluators thought less of Canty than other recruiting services. Scout and ESPN both peg Canty as a 3-star recruit.

Football may not be the only sport that Canty plays at WSU. At 6'8, 270 he was also getting plenty of looks from schools as a basketball prospect. How much time he sees on the court will likely be related to what position he eventually plays in football. If Leach and his staff decide Canty's length is better suited at offensive tackle, the extra weight he would need to add would make basketball difficult.

Whether it is on offense or defense, it is likely Canty won't see the field until after a redshirt year in 2014. Highlights from Canty can be seen on his Hudl page.
