2014 MLB Draft: Four WSU baseball players selected on Day 3

There were expected to be a flurry of guys picked early in Day 3, and that held true as Yale Rosen, Nick Tanielu and Tanner Chleborad came off the board quickly. Collin Slaybaugh waited longer, but was picked in the 26th round.

Draft recap: 4 Cougs picked, others face choices

Yale Rosen, Nick Tanielu, Tanner Chelborad and Collin Slaybaugh are selected, leaving some juniors not selected with tough choices. We recap the day's action.

Chleborad eager to negotiate with Orioles

WSU right-handed pitcher Tanner Chleborad, a junior, appears as if he's probably going to be headed off to begin his professional career after being selected in the 16th round by the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.

"I'm extremely excited to have an opportunity to play at the next level," Chleborad said in a statement through WSU. "There is still some negotiating to do, but I am eager to see how the process plays out."

That sounds an awful lot like "I'm signing if they're in the ballpark of a reasonable offer." Outfielder Yale Rosen already has announced his intention to turn pro, while third baseman Nick Tanielu sounds less sure.

Tanielu noncommittal about signing with Astros

Unlike teammate Yale Rosen, who already has announced he'll be turning pro, WSU third baseman Nick Tanielu -- the 14th round pick of the Houston Astros -- wasn't quite as definite in his post-draft statement this morning.

"First and foremost, I thank God, my dad and the coaches at Washington State," Tanielu said in a statement through WSU. "I could not have done this without them. My family and the coaches have always been in my corner. Thank you to the Coug fans for always rooting for us in good time and bad. Thank you to the Astros for providing me an opportunity to pursue my dream of playing professional baseball."

If you try and read the tea leaves, it sounds like Tanielu is leaning toward signing with the Astros, who selected him as a second baseman. But he's only a junior, and it sounds like he left himself some wiggle room to negotiate with Houston.

More on how Tanielu projects as a professional player here.

The lanky right hander could be headed off to the AL East if he decides to sign.

Rosen will indeed turn pro with Padres

It was widely believed that WSU outfielder Yale Rosen would forego his senior season after being selected in the 2014 MLB Draft, and he confirmed those suspicions shortly after being selected by the San Diego Padres in the 11th round on Saturday.

"Before I left Pullman at the end of the season, I talked with the (WSU) coaching staff about my intentions to start my professional career," Rosen said in a statement through WSU. "I had a chance to work out for the Padres in San Diego a couple of days ago and there are some really good people in the organization. I am going to have an opportunity to play in Eugene, Ore., in the Northwest League, so this is a very exciting time."

Rosen is the Cougars' highest draft choice in the 2014 draft who has quite a bit of power potential. He led WSU in home runs each of the past two seasons and was an all-Pac-12 honorable mention selection.

More thoughts on his potential here.
