A few WSU players have been named to preseason award watch lists, but they've all been for lesser awards. Connor Halliday became the first Cougar listed on a major award watch list when he was one of 39 players on the 2014 Davey O'Brien watch list for the best quarterback in the country.
Halliday is one of eight Pac-12 quarterbacks on the list. If his 2014 season is anything like his second half of 2013, he has a good chance to remain on the watch list as the season goes on. He put up huge passing numbers last year and did so without being extremely efficient. His interceptions plummeted as the season went on and he was playing his best football during the second half. A full season of that and he might approach 5,000 yards with 40+ touchdowns. Those numbers will certainly keep him in the mix of top quarterbacks.
The field will be narrowed to 16 finalists on Nov. 3 before being cut down to three finalists on No. 24. The winner will be announced during the end-of-the-year awards show on Dec. 11. The award isn't limited to the 39 quarterbacks listed on the initial watch list.
