After a 2015 recruiting class that was without a player from Washington, offensive lineman Joshua Watson, among others, is making sure that won't happen again this year. Watson, a product of Cascade High School in Everett, Wash., has officially decided that he will continue his college football career in Pullman next year.
Watson, a composite three-star prospect, also held offers from Boise State, Fresno State, and Idaho. No news of a wavering commitment had been reported since he committed in late June. He has a large 6-foot-5, 265 pound build and projects as either a tackle or a guard depending on the recruiting service. In high school he played both ways, primarily at right tackle on offense. Last season Watson was named first team all-state by the Associated Press and The News Tribune in Tacoma.
Even though he played primarily on the exterior of the line in high school, it wouldn't be surprising to see Watson moved to either of the guard spots in college. He has the height to play anywhere along the line, but it will likely come down to his level of athleticism. The Cougs current right tackle, Cole Madison, played tight end in high school before bulking up to do more blocking. It will probably be a couple of years before we see Watson on a Saturday, but if his dominance of the Wesco has any predictive value, he could would work his way into the 2017 offensive line two-deep.
Brian Anderson's quick scouting report
Great get-off on run blocks and finishes well. Has the foot speed to play tackle with a frame that could support the weight gain. Another Leach lineman recruit that is overly athletic for the position. Probably a bit more of a project, just due to the 30-40ish pounds he'll need to gain, but a great base to build from.
