WSU Vs. Sacramento State: Cougs Struggle Early, Pull Away Late To Win 79-68
The Sacramento State Hornets jumped out to an early double-digit lead that they maintained for most of the first half. Washington State made a run to pull within three at halftime. The score remained close for much of the second, until WSU was able to build a ten-point lead around the under-8 timeout.
The Hornets came out on fire, and found themselves with plenty of open looks. Transfer wing Joe Eberhard was active on both ends of the floor. He led the Hornets with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. John Dickson was key in Sac State's early run, and finished with a team-high 21 points.
The Cougs looked very lethargic and a little disinterested at times. It was as if they expected to win, no matter what. There were a number of times when they chose to take a contested three rather than using their athletic advantage to get to the inside. Reggie Moore struggled, often getting into the lane easily, but having no real purpose once he got there. Moore finished the game without a field goal and just three points. He would have been better off resting his injured groin.
The bigs were huge for WSU, especially in the first half when outside shots were not falling. Brock Motum and D.J. Shelton were able to get inside for a number of easy buckets. Motum led the team with a game-high 23 points on 9-12 shooting and added eight rebounds. Shelton didn't see much action in the second half, but scored 7 points on 2-3 shooting. He was able to get to the line seven times, but only converted on three of those. Side Note: He has an interesting free throw stance and stands about a foot behind the line.
Faisal Aden came through as he did last year against the low-major teams. Aden's risk-taking style often gets him more steals against slower teams, and that was the case tonight as he recorded five. Aden was actually seen passing up a few shots to set up his teammates on a few occasions, even recording assists in back-to-back possessions. The second a fancy no-look pass setting up a high-flying two-handed slam by freshman DaVonte Lacy on the fast break. Aden was efficient with his shot and scored 18 points on 7-9 shooting. Of course, there is always the bad with good with Faisal, as he turned the ball over five times. Motum tied with Aden with five turnovers. The two combined for 10 of the team's 12 total.
Lacy again was impressive on the offensive end, scoring 15 points on 10 possessions. He struggled with his jumper early, but found his groove in the second half. Two plays that stand out (besides the dunk) are a baseline drive in the first when he crossed over the defender and drew the foul for an and-one and in the second half when he used a quick first step get into the lane and drop in a beautiful floater from about ten feet. This kid has a whole lot of weapons in his offensive arsenal, and so far is as good as advertised.
After a torrid start, WSU was actually able to hold Sacramento State under one point per possession for the night (barely). The Hornets definitely look to be improved over last year, and this performance was a far cry from the 84-36 whipping they received a year ago. As I said in my preview, the transfers look to be giving them a boost. It's hard to see them finishing last in the Big Sky again this year, as Kenpom currently predicts (remember, his preseason stuff didn't take into account transfers).
Still, this is a game that WSU should have won more handily. I'm still wondering why Will DiIorio is getting so much time at the four. He doesn't seem to bring a whole lot of value and was undersized even in this game. A guy like Shelton is someone that WSU is going to need in conference play, and it would be nice to see him get more time right now. It's possible that this is a product of a coach rewarding a kid for his hard work in practice, it's hard to know for sure.
It's good that the Cougs were able to struggle and still escape with a win. There are a lot of teams around the conference having trouble with the "cupcakes." This game can provide Bone something to teach on without having to take an ugly L.
WSU gets back on the court to face their second WCC team of the young season at Portland this Sunday, KenPom has that game as a toss-up at the moment, and the Pilots are going to be a tough out. WSU will definitely need to play better to come out on top in that one.
HOW TO TIE A TIE: Tony Bennett Edition
It's Easter Sunday and thousands of men across the country are reaching deep into their closets to find that little used piece of silk in hopes of looking presentable for their once-yearly trip to church. The problem many of these men discover is that once they have said piece of silk in hand, they have absolutely no idea what to do with it. They scramble to figure out what to do, usually resorting to searching on Google for instructions. This often leads to some very sloppy knots.
Washington State once had a coach who participated in a similar yearly ritual. Tony Bennett was famous for his lack of neckwear while roaming the Cougar bench, and on Senior Night he would buck his trend and don a fancy tie to honor his graduates. Tony was smart about it, he did the high school athlete thing and left his ties in knots hanging from hooks in his closets.* Unfortunately, he didn't use this time saved to recruit big men that can rebound.
*Yes, I made that up. I do that on occassion.
However, once Tony moved on to "oranger" pastures (leaving many Cougs who had bought 'tie one on for Tony' shirts out in the cold), he was forced to dress a little more professionally (1 million a year doesn't require you to wear a tie...but 1.7 does!). The ACC is big time, not like the small potatoes league out here on the Pacific Coast. Tony's new found professionalism has led to success on the basketball court, as Tony has won 12 more ACC conference games in the last two years than he did in his three years as WSU's basketball coach.
So in Tony's tie-wearing honor, and to honor all of you who pulling your neckwear out of the mothballs this Sunday, I offer you this instructional video after the jump.
2011 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP THREAD: Butler Vs. UConn
The final game of the 2010-2011 season is here and it is your run-of-the-mill 3 vs. 8 match-up for the championship. Matt Howard and Kemba Walker will be locked in a battle of basketball stars who don't really look like they should be so awesome at what they do (I'm referencing Kemba's size and Howard's...everything).
It's so strange that Butler is here again. If Gordon Heyward would have came back I would have said there is still no chance they make it back to the title game. Apparently they didn't need him, because Shelvin Mack has been on fire and he is as important to his team (maybe even moreso during the tournament) as Walker is for Connecticut.
Technically, UConn is actually the the more surprising of the pair. They were not even ranked in the preseason (Butler was). So who really is the underdog here?
If Butler is involved, it seems that it is likely to be a close game. They are always in close games.
I'm sad college basketball is about to leave us. I'll miss you, buddy.
2011 NCAA TOURNAMENT THREAD: The Final Four
Obviously the NCAA Tournament is being controlled by a VCU fan playing a video game on the lowest level this year.
Remember last year when Butler was in the Final Four and everyone was saying the fans better enjoy it because it was a once in a lifetime experience? Can Matt Howard ugly his way to another championship game?
In any other year, a three seed playing a four seed in the Final Four would be big news. This year the winner is the heavy favorite to take home the title.
2011 NCAA TOURNAMENT THREAD: Elite Eight, Day Two
The last two members of the Final Four will be set today. Can we do the first few rounds over? I don't want college basketball to end.
With the path Kansas has had and will have in front of them, Jayhawk fans should be very disappointed with anything less than a title.
VCU tries to make that ridiculous 11-8 Final Four match-up happen, as Butler fulfilled their half yesterday.
A couple scrappy programs trying to get to the Final Four. Can one of these cinderellas use this run to propel themselves to the national stage?
2011 NCAA TOURNAMENT THREAD: Elite Eight, Day One
Brad Stevens uses kenpom.com....and now we know the secret to Butler's success!
There is a chance that an eight seed can meet a twelve seed in the Final Four. If anyone had that in their brackets, they were closing their eyes and guessing.
Is it possible for UConn to lose on a neutral floor? Should they quit scheduling home games and instead invite schools to play far away in random arenas?
2011 NCAA TOURNAMENT THREAD: Sweet 16, Day Two
There is really no better way to spend your Friday Night than talking about college basketball on the internet.
Best unis now vs. super iconic uniform color. How does an eagle become golden?
I don't know.
Should be the best game of the night. Two guys who recruit as well as anyone in college basketball go head-to-head.
Florida State has the best defense in the the nation...so I'm sure VCU will go crazy on them.
2011 NCAA TOURNAMENT THREAD: Sweet 16, Day One
The 12-hour basketball streamin' and threadin' binges of last week are now crammed into a five hour slot. I hope you guys can survive.
GO AZTECS!!!!
BYU in New Orleans? Either it's an honor code violation or a glorious waste of New Orleans.
Is this the point where Duke fans actually start getting excited about the season? Duke is in the Sweet 16 almost every year. I'm still enjoying our NIT semifinals run.....
/Deep sigh
Matt Howard just won't die. Ever.
