WSU missed out on a chance to add a game-breaking player to its stable of offensive weapons when athlete Zion Echols picked Cal over the Cougars today.
Echols, a composite three-star recruit who is 5-foot-9 and 175 pounds, is the sort of offensive talent that spread-em-and-shred-em offenses such as WSU's Air Raid and Cal's "Bear Raid" covet. He's shifty in tight spaces and possesses breath-taking speed that makes him a threat to take any touch to the house.
Had Echols come to WSU, he could have filled a role like the one Keith Harrington will likely fill going forward, lining up in the backfield and at inside receiver. Instead, he heads to Berkeley. He was originally committed to Sonny Dykes and his staff, but decommitted back in early November before reaffirming that commitment today, even after the Golden Bears lost offensive coordinator Tony Franklin to Middle Tennessee.
Interestingly, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune is reporting that Echols played his senior season with a pair of broken wrists, which he recently repaired through surgery. That's ... wow.
