Three catches for 53 yards in the Seahawks' preseason finale wasn't enough for Michael Bumpus.
The former WSU receiver was among 20 players cut from the Seahawks yesterday, although he was signed to the practice squad today after clearing waivers.
There are two factors to which you can attribute Bumpus' cut, especially after the season-ending injury to Ben Obomanu made it appear as if Bump had a pretty decent chance of making the squad. First, the Seahawks decided not to put Deion Branch on the PUP list that would have forced Branch to miss the first six games. That would have cleared another roster spot. Second, they decided to carry both kickers who were in camp -- veteran Olindo Mare and rookie Brandon Coutu.
For his part, Bumpus feels like he did as well as he could.
"My job (Friday) was just to make it difficult on them, and I feel I did that," he said.
The good news? Being the only receiver on the practice squad means he's likely just one more serious injury away from being on the 53-man roster. He also could be signed by any other team at any other time.
Other notable Cougs not making the grade this weekend include defensive Mkristo Bruce, who was cut by Jacksonville and signed to the Jags' practice squad, and quarterback Alex Brink, who was released by the Houston Texans.
