We heard about this Wednesday morning, but it's official now: Tight end Mansel Simmons has signed with the Washington State football team. Simmons was a last-minute addition from Sacramento, but flew under the radar during recruiting season. At 6-foot-5, 230 pounds, Simmons has solid size, but less experience in the passing game. Washington State announced his signing in a press release on Thursday afternoon.
Known as more of a blocking tight end at Sheldon High School in Elk Grove, California, Simmons finished the 2010 season with 12 catches for 286 yards and three touchdowns. He also played on the defensive side of the ball, registering 27 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
Simmons is the 26th member of the class of 2011 and the Cougs may not be done yet. Head coach Paul Wulff talked about adding a few more between now and the beginning of next season, with the staff looking for another running back at the very least.
