According to an article on Cougfan.com, Hawaii S/RB Cyrus Coen has chosen to walk-on this Fall. Coen played running back and free safety at Pearl City HS in Pearl City, Hawaii.
Watching some of his tape, it's hard to make any assessments at all. Roughly 90% of his highlights are as a RB, which he probably won't play at WSU. Coen seems destined for Special Teams for the vast majority of his career, but that's not necessarily a negative thing.
I don't know why, but I've always been partial to walk-ons. They have a chip on their shoulder from not getting a big time scholarship, so they generally outwork everyone else to prove that they belong. Coen also graduated with a 3.8 GPA, while racking up 1630 on his SAT. 1630! I mean, Zack Morris got a 1502 and was accepted into Yale. So with a 1630, we should expect he'll be winning Knowledge Bowls and joining Mathletes in the very near future.
(I also realize the SAT has changed, and the max score is higher than it was before. Obviously I said all of that in jest, but 1630 is still pretty darn good, and especially when you consider his time is split between academics and athletics.)
Here's his video, if you're at all curious.
I read he posted a 40-yard-dash in the 4.5 range, but I honestly don't see that in this video. I mean, he doesn't look terribly slow, but he doesn't resemble a burner in any way, shape, or form. He looks more like a power back, as his legs are pretty thick. There was hardly any video of him playing defense, so an evaluation is basically impossible. He's a walk-on, though, so I'm not sure you guys are really that upset I can't properly evaluate him.
Either way, welcome to the Cougar family, Cyrus.
