According to CougFan, Mike Leach has added another LB to Washington State's Class of 2012. Justin Sagote, a JC transfer with 3 to play 2*, will add depth to a LB corps that has seen both Sekope Kaufusi and C.J. Mizell dismissed from the team. Sagote had offers from Purdue and San Diego State, and is scheduled to graduate this May.
* The term "3 to play 2" means he'll have 3 years to play 2. He can redshirt if Leach and staff want him to. He'll be coming to WSU as a Junior, though. Some JC transfers already used a redshirt year, so they only have 2 to play 2.
This video is during his freshman year at College of San Mateo, and here's a link to more updated video if you so desire. The second video is probably the better of the two, plus, Numb/Encore.
My feelings on JC kids are fairly well known, but I don't mind bringing in a guy like this for depth. I don't think Leach will be going all in on the kid any time soon, and depth is never a bad thing. At 6'2, 225, he's pretty big. He's also pretty athletic, and he hits like a ton of bricks. I think at best, though, he's probably a poor man's Alex Hoffman-Ellis, and he'll most likely wind up as a Special Teams contributor and a nice back up.
Obviously with the departures of Kaufusi, Mizell, and T.J. Poloai, there are spots available. However, it's not as simple as inserting Sagote into one of the three available slots. There are limits to how many guys you can bring in each year, and we'll have to see some shuffling around with greyshirts. I'd like Sagote to redshirt -- because I'd like almost everyone to redshirt -- but I think he'll probably wind up on the field at some point in 2012.
The one overwhelmingly good thing about this signing is Sagote replaces Kaufusi on the All Hair 1st Team. Thank goodness for that.
