Spencer Waseem was cited for fourth-degree assault on Wednesday, stemming from an incident that occurred at about 1:40 a.m. early on Sunday morning. Waseem allegedly hit another man in the face outside a house on Duncan Lane -- a small residential road that runs behind Scott-Coman just off Stadium Way. Following an investigation that lasted a couple days, Waseem was cited in connection with the incident.
The news comes from Christian Caple, who checked into the issue and tracked down spokesmen from the Pullman Police and WSU athletic department.
A 21-year-old man was at his residence on Duncan Lane early Sunday when he heard an altercation outside, Cmdr. Chris Tennant said. Upon going outside, the man said he was punched by another man, whom police believe to be Waseem.
If you're worried about the repercussions, I wouldn't be too concerned over it. Waseem hasn't been in trouble at WSU before and an assault charge isn't grounds for dismissal under Mike Leach's normal policy. The stories of his punishments for fighting are well-known, including the one that involved boxing gloves and a whole lot of conditioning.
The charge itself may be debatable, especially since it's based on witness accounts and took days to file. It's likely he fights the charge, and at this point I'm not sure how well it'll hold up going forward. But hey, I'm not a legal expert. I still just play one on the Internet.
Waseem has not practiced practiced this spring and may not see any live action until fall camp while dealing with a knee injury.
