Just when you think the 2012 class is in the books, Mike Leach adds another player. According to CF.C, the Cougs have added defensive lineman Austin Brown to the class of 2012. Brown was a two time 5A All State selection in Idaho (they have 5A in Idaho?) and blocked a ridiculous 12 kicks during his career at Mountain View HS in Meridian, ID.
How this works, numbers wise, is anyone's guess. With the departures of guys like TJ Poloai, CJ Mizell, Sekope Kaufusi, and Jordan Pu'u Robinson, perhaps the numbers now allow for Brown to take one of their spots. Prior to inking a Letter of Intent with WSU, Brown was committed to becoming a preferred walk-on at Boise State.
So, um. Take that, Boise State?
This video is a little tough to tell how he's getting off the line, as it more focuses on him simply getting the sack/tackle, but it does show his agility and athleticism. If you want to watch more highlights, you can check out his Hudl page.
Brown is listed at 6'3, 255 pounds, and is most likely redshirting. He looks like the type of player that switches between DT and DE, depending on the down and distance. I think he's a good, solid player, but I'd be surprised if he was anything more than depth. Depth is never a bad thing, by the way, and it's not meant to be some hugely negative review. I just think, if we're all being honest here, Brown is a guy who comes off the bench to give the starters a few plays off. Here's to hoping he's way better than that.
