SB Nation's version of the College Football rankings is here, and the BlogPoll Top 25 reveals that somebody loves Mike Leach and the WSU Cougars.
Earlier today, Dan Shirley asked this question on Twitter:
— Dan Shirley (@danshirley) August 28, 2012
@cougcenter Is there a way to see how many votes the "others recieving votes" got on the top 25 blog poll? Because WSU is there.
Now, Dan must have been looking at an older poll. Most likely the way-too-early preseason one at the end of last season. When he posed that question, this week's BlogPoll had not yet been released. Either that or he is psychic.
Either way, Washington State did end up in the receiving votes section and you might have a guess at what college fanbase that came from. I'll give you two hints:
1) They really wanted Mike Leach.
2) They didn't get Mike Leach.
Give up? Of course you don't. You know it is Kansas!
Back in late November when the coach carousel was whirling around fast enough for us all to vomit, there were two universities who repeatedly came up when Mike Leach was discussed: Our beloved WSU and the University of Kansas.
Kansas fans openly pined for Leach and seemed assured that he would sign with them. Some of them even scoffed at the idea that he would ever end up at Washington State (to be fair, many of us felt the same way).
Well, after investigating who gave WSU those "votes" for Mr. Shirley, Nuss pointed out to me that it was the folks over at Rock Chalk Talk. I immediately thought, "Yay! My story is already written."
Now, even the most optimistic of Coug fans would not peg them as a Top 25 team. This group went 4-8 a season ago and in all likelihood still trots out one of the worst defenses in the country. The only real explanation for Rock Chalk Talk putting WSU in 17th! must be the same reason why some of us are more excited for Cougar football than we have been in many years.
Mike Leach!
Just a reminder that Mike Leach is our coach. Full poll after the jump.
