Jerome Riley, Mawuli Davis win CougCenter Player of the Week honors

The Cougs defeated the Stanford Cardinal this past weekend thanks to outstanding individual efforts from Riley and Davis.

WSU Athletics Communications

The Cardinal of Stanford were no match for the Cougs on Saturday, as Heisman hopeful Jason Gesser led WSU to a 36-11 victory. The Cougs are now sitting at 6-1 going into the bye week. Wazzu's sole loss came earlier this season to the surprisingly good Ohio State Buckeyes, who remain undefeated. Obviously Miami (FL) is still the best team by a wide margin, but Ohio State could sneak into the National Title game and give the Hurricanes some trouble. Who knows, if something happens to star RB Willis McGahee, perhaps the Hurricanes become more vulnerable? It's all just speculation, really. I just want to get it on record that I think Ohio State is a really good team, even if they don't really have any star players like Miami does.

Offensive POTW:

Jerome Riley -- 9 catches, 173 yards, 1 TD, L39

I know, I know. Many of you think Gesser should be here after throwing for 297 yards and 3 TDs. I just think the game Riley had was too good to ignore. Gesser went to Riley almost exclusively, and Sherwood's prediction that Mike Bush would catch at least 2 TDs fell just a bit short; Bush finished with just one catch for 9 yards. I guess drinks are on Sherwood next week.

Defensive POTW:

Mawuli Davis -- 11 tackles (1 solo), 2 TFL, 2 sacks

I came pretty darn close to giving this award to Jason David and his 2 interceptions, but Davis just seemed like the right fit. He was disruptive all game, sacking Stanford QBs Chris Lewis and Kyle Matter once each. The guy just seemed to be everywhere on defense. With Stanford's OL double teaming Rien Long all game, it freed up Davis to roam and make plays.

Special Teams POTW:

Kyle Basler -- 3 punts, 115 yards (38.3 avg), L43, 1 inside the 20

Basler didn't have an especially great game, but no one really stood out on special teams this week. Our kicker connected on both of his field goals, but I'll never name him POTW as long as I'm alive. So Basler is your winner by default! Yay!
