The day after Gonzaga and before Utah

With the Gonzaga game in the books, the attention turns back to football.

James Snook-USA TODAY Sports

Washington State traveled to Spokane to take on Gonzaga on Thursday and the result was fairly typical. The Cougars got Pangos'd ... again.

To make matters worse, it appeared at time like every Gonzaga player was wearing a Pangos jersey. The boxscore says the Bulldogs missed 10 three-point attempts, but I'm not sure I believe it. On the positive side, Ike Iroegbu looked really good. Jeff had a quick recap of the game on the blog last night.

The attention now shifts back to football where in a little more than 24 hours, the Cougars will go for win No. 6 on the season. Several prognosticators are picking the Cougs -- including Ted Miller and Kevin Gemmell of ESPN Pac-12 Blog fame -- and that makes me really nervous. Nothing against Kevin, Ted or anyone else picking the Cougs, but WSU hasn't exactly performed well recently in games most expect them to win.

Hopefully that will change tomorrow.

Gemmell: Can Utah win outside its home state? Can Washington State win a conference game at home? Utah has that wounded-animal mentality right now, which is dangerous. But Washington State is on the cusp of bowl eligibility, while the Utes haven’t won since the Stanford game, which felt like a lifetime ago. Washington State 28, Utah 24

The thermometer dropped 25 and it felt even colder as the Cougars took the field for their last regular practice before a big game against Utah. Quarterback Connor Halliday was sharp, completing 22 of 25 passes in the 11-on-11 session.

Say what you will about Washington State coach Mike Leach, he’s an avid bowler. The controversial coach never missed the postseason in his 10-year tenure at Texas Tech and, after going 3-9 in his debut season in Pullman, Leach has the 5-5 Cougars one win away from their first bowl appearance since the 2003 Holiday Bowl.

Bowl Watch: Washington State, UNC look to clinch eligibility in Week 13 -
Utah (4-6) at Washington State (5-5); Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET: With the Apple Cup at Washington next week and a contract extension already announced for Mike Leach, this game has a "must win" feel for the Cougars to reach the postseason for the first time since 2003. Utah has suffered its fair share of hiccups this season, but can still achieve bowl eligibility by riding backup quarterback Adam Schulz to back-to-back wins this week and against Colorado next week. Bowling? Yes.
