WSU vs. Utah football: Baxter's beer of the game

It's an early game in Pullman this week, and Baxter has the perfect beer.

After a number of late-night games in Pullman this season, WSU will finally be hosting a day game in Martin Stadium on Saturday, with a kickoff time of 12:30 p.m. PT. That means the tailgating started early today.

Early morning drinking typically involves a bloody mary, an irish coffee, and maybe a screwdriver or a mimosa. But this is a beer column, and Baxter doesn't care much for your mixed drinks.

With that in mind, Baxter sent me off for one of his favorites: Founders Breakfast Stout. Founders describes Breakfast Stout as a "double chocolate coffee oatmeal stout." Who even needs to eat breakfast with that assortment of ingredients?

Breakfast Stout's label is hard to miss: It is a drawing of a baby eating a bowl of oatmeal with a Founders branding. Most places where Founders is sold don't mind this, except for Vermont's neighbor New Hampshire (according to the guy who runs the Stowe Liquor Store).

In New Hampshire, Breakfast Stout is only sold on draft. The packaging with the baby is not approved because of the depiction of a baby (even though the baby is not actually drinking the beer). Thus, the bottled beer cannot be sold in the "Live Free or Die" State.

Luckily, there are no such limitations in the Green Mountain State, and Breakfast Stout has become a winter staple in the Baxter-Boycat household.

Craig's Review: The aroma is wonderful: Coffee and sweet malt. The first sip truly tastes like breakfast: the chocolate, coffee and oatmeal notes are prevalent. Even with all that, the beer is not overpowered by sweetness because of an excellent hop finish. Breakfast Stout features 60 IBUs, typical of a standard American IPA.

With such a full body and strong coffee flavor, it really does feel like a breakfast meal. What could be better for early-morning football pre-gaming?

Baxter's Review: I'm pretty excited that I don't have to stay up until 2 a.m. watching the football game tonight, I usually get pretty tired around 11 p.m. I don't like my schedule messed with.

The beer is yummy and sweet. I love when Craig brings it home. The only problem is Amanda likes it too, so there is less for Craig and I to share.

That is what Baxter and I will be enjoying as we watch the Cougs try to become bowl-eligible against the Utes. What will you be having?
