Yesterday, it was announced that Deone Bucannon had become the first Cougar since Brandon Gibson in 2007 to be named first team all Pac-12. Today, seven more people from two other WSU sports were honored.
WSU Soccer coach Keidane McAlpine was named pacific region coach of the year by NSCAA. This is the third Coach of the year award for McAlpine after getting Pac-12 specific awards from the conference itself and from College Sports Madness, which is a real organization, apparently .
Along with their coach, Three women's soccer players were honored by the same organization. Micaela Castain was named first team NSCAA all-region, Nicole Setterlund and Rachael Doyle were all named to the second team NSCAA all-region team or, as it's officially called, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire National Collegiate Athletics Association Division One Women's All-Pacific Region Second Team. (And I'm only slightly exaggerating that name...)
Castain was named to the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women’s All-Pacific Region First Team while Doyle and Setterlund were second team honorees.
In another women's sport, three Cougar volleyball players were named to All-Pac-12 teams. Kyra Holt was named to the All-Pac-12 honorable mention team while Emmy Allen and Hailey Bethune were named to the All-Pac-12 freshmen honorable mention team.
Both of these teams were much improved over last season and were a ton of fun to watch. A lot of that is due to the work of these players (and coach). Here's to a great offseason and an even better season next year.
