The Washington State Cougars are riding a five-game losing streak and have won just two of their 12 conference games, so beer is becoming more and more important.. Baxter the dog is back with his beer of the game to help fans deal as the Cougs face Oregon.
With WSU losing so many basketball games, and seeming destined to finish in the cellar of the Pac-12, it is safe to say that the Cougars are terrible. Bax wanted to commemorate the basketball team's ineptitude with a limitied release beer from The Lagunitas Brewing company out of Petaluma, Calif.
What beverage could be more fitting for this team than one simply called "Sucks?"
Lagunitas Sucks is a double IPA that was first brewed in 2011 after the brewery was unable to brew their Brown Shugga" strong ale (that's why it is called "Brown Shugga Substitute") because of construction. It features a modest 63 IBU, less than many DIPAs.
Craig's Review: The beer has an excellent hop aroma, with a combination of floral and grapefruit smells. The malt takes a back seat (which I value in my double IPAs). There is a little sweetness from the malt at first, but it is immediately overtaken by the citrus hop flavors.
The beer is finished off wonderfully by the piney hops to give it an all-around hop experience. Folks who love hops would love this beer.
That being said, this isn't some sort of bitter bomb. Those that prefer to avoid that should still give this beer a shot. The hops flavor is still smooth. Lagunitas Sucks Highly recommended and I will surely be grabbing more six-packs before it goes away (it is a winter seasonal).
Baxter's Review: I figured Craig was getting pretty sad about the WSU basketball team, so I wanted to pick a beer that I knew he would like. I enjoyed it, and wanted more. Unfortunately, Craig did not want to share all that much. So lame. Guess it is back to the water dish to quench my thirst.
So that is what Baxter and I will be having as the Cougs take on the Ducks. Share what you will be having, or discuss any new beers that you have tried in the comments.
