HCA: Prepare for Camp Leach

WSU is going on the road for part of fall camp. If the Cougars are good next season are we going to call them the Lewiston Boys now?

James Snook-US PRESSWIRE

Going away for part of fall camp has once again become a trend in college football. UCLA and ASU did it last season and now WSU is following suit this season. The Cougars will hold a portion of fall camp in Lewiston, according to the Moscow-Pullman Daily news.

The move is partially due to space restraints due to the current Martin Stadium construction. Equipment is taking up some of Rogers Field, meaning WSU would have to have half the team practice in Martin Stadium and the other half work on the other part of the practice field. I would assume that will still be an issue when the team returns from Lewiston, but maybe an extra few days will allow more of the practice field to be cleared.

Camp Leach will also allow for some bonding time as the players will be stuck in a dorm or hotel together for a few days. WSU stays in hotels in Lewiston the night before home games to get away from distractions in Pullman, and this figures to do the same. Maybe Leach will channel his inner Herman Boone and take the team for an inspiring morning jog.

WSU opens fall camp on Aug. 2.

The Huskies Apple Cup rival Washington State had plenty of questions in Year 2 under Mike Leach. While many thought Leach would lead a turnaround in Year 1, the Cougars season was a struggle from the get-go. The big question for the Cougs then is if Leach has the talent and team culture to get the Cougars back to consistently competitive.
