Women's basketball knocks off No. 24 Arizona State

WSU's women's basketball team opened Pac-12 play with a win on Friday, knocking off No. 24 Arizona State 85-78 in Pullman.

The Cougars were led by sophomore Lia Galdeira who scored 27 points on 8-of-17 shooting. She was one of four players in double figures with Tia Presley chipping in 17, Mariah Cooks 11 and Sage Romberg 10. Dawnyelle Awa scored five points and led WSU with four assists and three steals. The Cougars trailed early early on and were down 38-34 at halftime. Things changed for the better in the second half. WSU shot 58 percent from the field while limiting ASU to 31 percent. The Cougars also hit their free throws in the waning moments to seal the game.

With the win, the Cougars are now 7-6 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. WSU has knocked off two ranked teams this season, the first time it's accomplished that feat twice in a season since 2001. The Cougars will get a few more opportunities to add to that total this season with Stanford, Colorado and California all ranked.
