Connor Halliday was named to the Davey O'Brien watch list during the summer, but he may contend for more than just the quarterback of the year award. Halliday was added to the Maxwell Award watch list on Wednesday -- the award for the college player of the year.
It may not be the Heisman trophy, but the Maxwell Award is the second-most prestigious award given in college football. Being on the watch list and actually winning are two very different things, but that doesn't diminish the honor. The watch list is a who's who of the best players in the country. Halliday's massive passing totals have drawn plenty of attention and if he remains on the record-setting pace, he could be a strong contender to take home some postseason hardware. The Maxwell Award is voted by coaches, media and other members of the Maxwell Football Club.
If he's going to remain a contender for the award he will need to play well in the next few weeks. The watch list will be reduced on Nov. 3 to a smaller group of semifinalists. That group will be reduced even further with three finalists being named on Nov. 24. The winner will be announced with the rest of the major non-Heisman awards on Dec. 11.
Washington State's record may not help Halliday's candidacy, but there are worse resumes than one with multiple FBS records on it.
